Michelin prototype on Geneva-launched eco Citroën

The Citroën Hybrid Air has enjoyed its world premiere at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and the technology is expected to be in production by 2016. Based on a petrol engine and hydraulic components (engine and pump) but no battery, the French car maker states that Hybrid Air technology combines ground-breaking performance with maximum accessibility. Citroën claims the Hybrid Air demonstrator can achieve 2.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, with carbon dioxide emissions capped at 68 grammes per kilometre; in comparison the Citroën C3, at the same power, uses 4.5 litres of fuel for 100 kilometres and emits 104 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

West Europe pcr capacity down 38M units in last 5 years

Just a day after Bridgestone announced it will close its passenger car tyre factory in Bari, Italy, DB Equity Research Automotive analyst Gaetan Toulemonde comments that the tyre industry has reduced its passenger car tyre capacity in Western Europe by 38 million units. Toulemonde puts the current Western European passenger tyre market at 275 million units; 65 million are supplied to OEM customers, the remaining 210 million are sold on the replacement market. This number, Toulemonde adds, has remained stable over the last five years – the decrease in local production being compensated by higher imports such as those from China, which have doubled over the last five years to 50 million units a year.

Bridgestone shows ‘Large & Narrow’ concept

In the future we may return to the past, at least when it comes to tyre dimensions – tomorrow’s tyres may take their cues from the large diameter, thin tyres of the 1920s and 1930s. By giving tyres a larger vertical diameter and increasing their internal air pressure, it is possible to limit changes in the shape of the contact patch, the section of the tyre that comes in contact with the road. Furthermore, by optimising the structure of tyres created using this technology and using appropriate materials, a significantly lower rolling resistance coefficient can be achieved. And when these tyres are narrower than those typically used today, air resistance is also decreased.

Bridgestone to close Italian pcr plant

Last May, Bridgestone celebrated the golden jubilee of its Bari passenger car tyre factory in Italy. There will be no diamond jubilee, however; on 4 March, Bridgestone Europe stated that the plant will be closed. Operations at the Bari facility are expected to cease within the first half of 2014, although the exact timing of the closure, along with terms and conditions, are yet to be discussed. Bridgestone says it is “immediately available to start the discussion to identify the best solution in order to minimise, as much as possible, the social impact of the decision on the approximately 950 employees involved, in line with the culture of the group.”

Tyres ‘tremendously improved’ – and getting better

Upon announcing the outcome of its 2013 summer tyre test, held in partnership with consumer foundation Stiftung Warentest, German motorists’ organisation ADAC noted that this latest test marks the 40th anniversary of its first tyre test. In 1973 – an “exciting time” for tyres due to the replacement of cross-ply with radial models – the ADAC used an Opel Rekord 1900 as a test vehicle to evaluate 25 tyres.

New pricing analyst at Point S

Point S has appointed Jonathan Smith as a Pricing Analyst. As Pricing Analyst, Smith will be responsible for regularly reviewing the data provided to Point S by suppliers including Bridgestone, Michelin and Yokohama. Any insights gained from this information will then be fed back to member via the pricing area of the new Point S website. In addition he will also be developing a range of automated processes that will enhance member’s experience of Point S.

Bridgestone OE on Nissan 370Z Nismo

Nissan will fit Bridgestone’s Potenza S001 tyres to its new European market Nismo. The tyre manufacturer will supply wider 245/40R19 sizes on the front and 285/35R19 on the rear with a “tailor-made” compound. The tyre will respond to the V6 344-horsepower coupe’s cornering, sporty handling and power, Bridgestone says.

Firestone launches agricultural sprayer tyre

Firestone has announced details of its first tyre for the agricultural sprayer market, the Performer Row Crop. Displayed for the first time at SIMA 2013 in size 270/95R48, Firestone will expand the Performer Row Crop tyre size line up to include 85, 90 and 95 series in the near future. “Firestone concentrates on solutions that give farmers a more efficient and sustainable way of working, through savings in fuel consumption and working time” says Harald Van Ooteghem, senior manager marketing planning, Bridgestone Europe.

Bridgestone profits up 67%

It turns out that 2012 was a good year for Bridgestone Corporation. The Japanese tyre and rubber products manufacturer achieved a 66.8 per cent increase in net income during the period, taking in a healthy 171.6 billion yen (£1.18 billion). This jump in profit was achieved despite sales remaining relatively level; these increased 0.5 per cent to 3,039.7 billion yen (£20.94 billion). Operating income rose 49.5 per cent to 285.9 billion yen (£1.97 billion) and operating margin increased from 6.3 per cent to 9.4 per cent.

Sustainable materials to remain a green tyre niche – for now

Speaking at the Tire Technology Expo in February, Adam Page, UK-based business manager of reports and consultancy at Smithers Rapra, shared on the global market for green tyres – the subject at the heart of the company’s latest tyre industry market report, the Future of Green Tires to 2017. One significant projection Page shared from the Smithers Rapra report is that although the value of green tyre market is expected to grow by more than 56 per cent between 2012 and 2017, green tyres based on sustainable and bio-materials will likely play a comparatively minor role in this growth.

New Bridgestone Technical Center Europe MD named

According to a statement released by Bridgestone Corporation on 18 February, the Bridgestone Technical Center Europe is soon to receive a new managing director. The tyre maker reports that Yutaka Yamaguchi will take on this role, which is currently held by Bridgestone Europe CEO and president Franco Annunziato, on 26 March.

Bridgestone sponsoring V8 Supercars team

A return to Australia’s V8 Supercars Championship awaits Bridgestone in 2013, with the tyre maker teaming up with Nissan Motorsport in a sponsorship deal that will see Bridgestone branding on the Jack Daniel's Racing Nissan Altimas of Todd and Rick Kelly. The arrangement begins in round one of this year’s series, which gets underway in Adelaide on 28 February. The Clipsal 500 event in Adelaide marks the return of Nissan to Australia's premier motorsport category after a 20-year hiatus, with Mercedes-Benz also joining the expanded series.

First supply of Bridgestone run-flats to GM

Bridgestone reports its first-ever original equipment run-flat tyre fitment on a General Motors vehicle with the selection of its Potenza RE050A RFT for the 2013 Cadillac ATS. The Potenza is being supplied to GM in size 225/40RF18 88W (front) and 255/35RF18 90W (rear) for fitment on the ATS Premium Collection, the highest level package available on the new Cadillac.
