Vipal to Present Fuel Saving “ECO” Retreads

Vipal has announced that the company will launch a new range of fuel saving retreading products at Reifen, 2010. The new treads, named ECO reportedly form part of Vipal’s Transport Sustainability Project. According to the company, these are products that go “far beyond the savings from retreading: they also contribute for the environment and for the success of the transport activity.”

After fuel tyres represent the second highest product cost for the transport sector. “This is why we heavily invest in technology in order to produce treads that can help to reduce operational costs besides offering quality and safety. Furthermore, we have most recently achieved another pioneering landmark: we developed the first fuel-saving tread lines”, highlights João Carlos Paludo, CEO of Vipal.

Vipal and Fate Sign US$200 million Tyre Factory Memorandum of Understanding

Brazilian company Vipal, best known for its tyre retreading and repair materials, and Argentine tyremaker Fate have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rio Grande do Sul State of Southern Brazil to set up a new tyre factory. The first bi-national industrial collaboration in the state, the Vipal/Fate project sees the companies invest around US$200 million in building a “farm equipment” and “aftermarket car parts” tyre plant. There has been no official confirmation of what brand the new tyres will be produced under, but Tyres & Accessories understands that this means production will focus on passenger car and van tyres.

Continental Tire the Americas Gearing Up for Growth in 2010

Just as it takes a steady hand to navigate the waters of the Caribbean, Continental Tire the Americas is taking the same approach to its near-term efforts in the North American market, reports Tire Review. No major changes, no major announcements, just subtle adjustments and the addition of two new tyres highlighted its Gold Program Dealer Meeting, held during a three-day Caribbean cruise the 258 Gold Program dealers earned.

Guangdong Greatoo Expanding Mould Production

Despite the effects of the global recession, Guangdong Greatoo Molds Inc is planning to increase its Chinese mould making capacity to 5000 moulds and 3000 containers by the end of 2010, up 25 and 20 per cent respectively from current levels of 4000 moulds and 2500. In order to do this, the company is adding “lots of direct engraving machines in our new plant and these machines are state of the art thus reducing the machining time substantially” in addition to the firm’s existing plans for 200 hydraulic curing presses and CNC machines, according to company representatives.

What is April Fools’ Day?

According to Wikipedia, April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbors, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, such as the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool". Elsewhere, such as in France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Russia, The Netherlands, Brazil, and the U.S., the jokes last all day. The earliest recorded association between April 1 and foolishness can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392). Many writers suggest that the restoration of January 1 as New Year's Day the 16th century was responsible for the creation of the holiday, but this theory does not explain earlier references.

This leak rate is the tolerance threshold, which is measured with a helium leak detection method. This is the latest technology.

Passenger Car Tyre Markets Show Strong Growth in Feb – Michelin

Michelin’s market data for February 2010 shows a marked strengthening of passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales to OEM customers in a number of key regions. The OE passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyre market grew 47.0 per cent year-on-year in Europe (including Turkey but excluding Russia), 54.4 per cent in North America and 49.9 per cent in China. This gives a year-to-date growth of 42.9 per cent, 77.6 per cent and 91.3 per cent for the three respective regions.

Marangoni Becoming a “Global Player“ in Brazil

Although Italian firm Marangoni celebrated its 50th anniversary in the new Millennium, the year 2000 primarily represented a significant milestone on its path towards becoming a global operator. Today, ten years later, the Marangoni Group is, aside from Bandag and the new tyre manufacturers’ retreading activities, the industry’s sole genuine “global player”. The company has not only successfully established itself in Europe and North America, it is now slowly gaining a foothold in China. However in the last decade it is the operation in Brazil that has, above all, become the backbone of its global industrial presence.

Analysts Reduce Pirelli Earnings Estimate, But RE Spin-Off Would Change Their Minds

Morgan Stanley analysts have decreased the bank’s 2010/2011 Pirelli earnings per share estimates by 20 – 25 euro cents, following the company’s fourth quarter results. This means the analysts have reduced their estimates from 3.39 euros to 3.18 euros and 4.53 euros to 4.28 euros for 2010 and 2011 respectively. They also commented that bank’s tyre EBIT estimates are now in line with the market consensus.

However, while the latest investors note (published on 16 March) was direct in assessment that earnings would be reduced, the analysts also outlined potential events that would make them change their mind. At the top of their wish list are changes in group organization, which Pirelli’s management has publicly announced that is seeking: “We applaud the efforts Pirelli is taking to focus on the core tyre business and believe the market will continue to reward the company for this, as it has done in the months.”

China Market Growth Three Times Global Average

An estimate given by Sumitomo Rubber Industries suggests that sales of tyres in China will increase at three times the global rate. Bloomberg reports company president Tetsuji Mino as saying sales will increase about ten per cent per annum from just under 150 million tyres in 2009, compared with a global growth of three per cent. “We are sure that China is the most promising market,” Mino said. “Car ownership is spreading from wealthy people to ordinary consumers.”

Brazil Cottons on to US Subsidies, Introduces Tyre Tariffs

US exporters have been hit with an additional tariff by Brazil, a WTO-backed retaliation for what it calls “illegal” subsidies to US cotton farmers, reports Tire Review. Brazil’s new tariff structure, set to engage in 30 days barring a last minute agreement between the two countries, hits a wide range of products, including cars (from 35 to 50 per cent), cotton and cotton products (a full 100 per cent increase) and – most importantly around these parts – tyres (jumping from 16 to 32 per cent). In all, some 100 goods are now subject to higher import rates by Brazil, and could total $830 million annually.

Growing Demand, Tyre Labelling Prompts Lanxess to Boost Nd-PBR Capacity

Some 20 million euros are to be invested in increasing production of Neodymium Polybutadiene (Nd-PBR) rubber at Lanxess’s sites at Dormagen in Germany, Orange (Texas), USA and Cabo in Brazil. In total, 50,000 additional tonnes of the high-performance rubber will be manufactured at the three sites once the extra capacities go on stream between the first quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012.

Continental Extends Football Sponsorship with World Cup 2014 Deal

Continental has extended its sponsorship of international football events with a deal to become the Exclusive Tyre Partner and Official Sponsor of 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. “With preparation for activation of our sponsoring of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa going ahead at full steam, we have already laid the ground for worldwide marketing communication in the next few years by renewing the FIFA partnership through 2014,” explained Nikolai Setzer, Continental Executive Board member for Passenger and Light Truck Tyres.
