HiQ Unveils New Cornwall Regional Franchise Owner

St Austell tyre trade expert, Justin Roberton, has rubber-stamped a deal to own three fast fit centres in Cornwall, after his ambitious bid for a slice of a national franchise plan was accepted. Roberton has successfully applied for the Cornwall zone of the HiQ Franchise Programme, and will now run garages in Truro, Bodmin, and St Austell.

The regional manager is only the second man to be unveiled as a HiQ regional franchise owner following the decision by Goodyear Dunlop to group its existing, company-owned HiQ outlets into 15 regional zones.

Yokohama Marketing to Tyre Connoisseurs

As one of the world’s top ten tyre manufacturers distributing premium brands, Yokohama are aware of the marketing opportunities for the sector in conjunction with motorsport. The company has a history of over fifty years supporting various motorsport events worldwide, and now has provider agreements in place with such prestigious events as the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and 24 Heures Du Mans in addition to control tyre supplier exclusivity for the Formula Master Series and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile-accredited World Touring Car Championship. T&A visited the manufacturer at the latter competition for its 13th and 14th rounds at Brands Hatch on 27 July with the question in mind: how exactly does this sort of event partnership help Yokohama sell more tyres?

PCL Revamps Website

PCL has launched a revamped website at www.pclairtechnology.com. The new site showcases the company’s range of products, including its electronic tyre inflation equipment and enhanced air tool and air treatment ranges – all featuring the company’s new branding. In addition, brochures and product data sheets are available as downloads, and, for those who need advice and information, the site provides contacts for all worldwide locations, along with details of UK distributors and sales and support services.

Pirelli Appoints New Advertising Agency

Pirelli Tyre has appointed the Tampa, Florida based advertising agency Pyper Paul + Kenny to develop the company’s worldwide branding and creative platforms. PP+K came to Pirelli’s attention through the agency’s work for the Grand American Road Racing Association, whom the manufacturer sponsors.

The Italian firm hopes to develop strategic alliances with the Association and with World Rally Championship through the new appointment. PP+K will simultaneously launch a magazine advertising campaign in various auto-magazines worldwide.

Goodyear’s Ben Crawley ‘Highly Commended’ in Marketing Awards

Goodyear Brand Manager Ben Crawley is celebrating after being highly commended at this year’s Marketing Society awards held at the London Hilton. Crawley was one of only two selected as a finalist from across the UK, in the society’s Young Marketer of the Year Award which recognises industry leading performance from marketeers under the age of 30.

Goodyear uses a mix of media to communicate its message of safety and the brands unique safety partnerships are the main focus of this initiative. By becoming Safety and Innovation partner of the RNLI, Mountain Rescue and British Eventing, Goodyear has been able to communicate a message of family safety to a much wider target audience. Communications have included cause related marketing via Goodyear’s award winning HydraGrip tyre renowned for its safety in the wet, where 50p per tyre was donated to the authority on water safety, the RNLI and the issuing of thousands of safety arm bands to horse riders across the UK through its partnership with British Eventing.

Maxxis Official Tyre Partner of Isle Of Man TT Races

Maxxis has been named as the Official Tyre Partner for the 2008 Isle of Man TT Races, which take place between Saturday, May 24 and Saturday, June 7. Maxxis will enjoy category exclusivity making it the only tyre manufacturer to be officially affiliated to the races and actively promoted by the organisers in all their communications.

The sponsorship package entitles Maxxis to significant trackside advertising, branding on the footbridge crossing the start straight, branding on the start line grandstand, hospitality, prime position advertising in the TT Programme and branding on the press and winners’ enclosure back drops and on the Isle of Man TT website.

NTA Receives TyreSafe Outstanding Achievement Award

TyreSafe’s Outstanding Achievement award for 2008 has been presented to National Tyres and Autocare. The tyre safety organisation reports that the award was given in acknowledgement of the company’s “outstanding contribution to the work of TyreSafe since its formation at the start of 2007,” and was presented to National Tyres’ chief executive officer, Tony Neill, by TyreSafe chairman Rob Beddis at the NTDA Dinner in Birmingham on April 16.

National Tyres became a foundation member of TyreSafe when it emerged out of the old Tyre Industry Council, and since day one has helped to develop a new structure, tyre safety strategy and re-branding, which TyreSafe reports has already had a profound effect in raising tyre safety awareness and wider road safety. TyreSafe adds that, since its formation, National Tyres has actively engaged with, and supported, the recruitment of new members. Membership now stands at 26 companies, representing all the key tyre industry organisations.

HiQ’s Men in Black

HiQ technicians now have a new black uniform, designed to complement the company’s re-branding programme. All stores will be provided with the uniforms, replacing the traditional old blue threads. HiQ’s purchasing manager Nicola Calvey said: “HiQ has always believed that first impressions last…Technicians are anything but grease-monkeys. They are highly trained and equipped to meet a number of different needs and we wanted to reflect that.”

Maxxis Enters Second Year of XRRA Rock Racing

2008 will see Maxxis maintain its title sponsorship of the Xtreme Rock Racing (XRRA) Series for a second year. The Maxxis XRRA Series is covered extensively on cable’s Speed network and started this March with the first race in the western division, followed by the eastern division opener in April. US finals are scheduled for September, while the series also has international perspective – the German Championship runs between April and October.

“I believe that we are starting to see the industry recognising the series as the Maxxis XRRA. With the factory support we receive, not to mention the individual event support of Creighton King, we believe this is a great opportunity to capitalise on our momentum coming out of 2007. With this momentum and branding, 2008 is certain to outpace any previous race season,” said Jodi Weaver, president of XRRA. Brad Williams of Maxxis’s automotive department added: “Maxxis is very excited to sponsor XRRA for a second great year. The XRRA team is outstanding and we’re delighted to be working with them.”

Santa Pod Partnership Marks Marangoni’s 2008 Tuning Market Offensive

Following its debut appearance at Autosport International, Marangoni Tyre is aiming to build the brand through a title sponsorship agreement with the ‘speed’ venue. The sponsorship deal sees Marangoni and Santa Pod Raceway joining forces, linking high performance rubber with the adrenaline-pumping motor sport venue. The Marangoni message is set to reach over 60,000 performance-minded drivers during the Summer show season.

Cementing a Commitment to Recycling

From time to time words are spoken about the role tyre manufacturers and wholesalers do – or should – play in the full life cycle of the products they sell. The accepted consensus is for a greater level of responsibility, a role most parties have readily accepted. Michelin, the world’s second largest tyre manufacturer, was one of the first companies off the mark in the UK in terms of meeting this obligation, and its joint venture facility for the processing of end of life tyres – Sapphire Energy Recovery – is now in its eighth year of operation.

Passenger Car Centre Opens In Malaysia

Towards the end of last year, Heap Heng Tayar Sdn. Bhd., in partnership with Continental Sime Tyre (CST), opened the first BestDrive Continental Passenger Car and Light Truck (PLT) Centre in Kedah, Malaysia.

To date, seven BestDrive Continental PLT Centres have been opened throughout Peninsula Malaysia, with more to come, says Choong Kee Seng, Sales Director at CST. The concept of the centres is to provide a broad range of car and light truck-related services, aimed squarely at the premium customer segment.

Bridgestone Awarded “Superbrand” Status in Germany

The globally recognised independent authority on consumer opinion and branding, Superbrands, has identified the “Bridgestone” brand as one of the strongest brand names in its 2007 awards in Germany. This year’s German awards are the third held in that country, and the tyre major was one of a hundred companies nominated by the Superbrands judging panel of financial journalists and industry experts.

The stated aim of Superbrands is to identify and spotlight excellent product names in individual countries, and to honour these companies through the conferring of awards. Independent business experts initiate the selection process by first nominating a number of outstanding product brands and trademarks present in their own country. The selection panel then is given the task of evaluating these companies and choosing one hundred that stand head and shoulders above the rest. The criteria for selection are the prevalence and acceptance of the brand name or trademark, customer loyalty, the durability of the brand and the brand value of the business enterprise.
