Goodyear Promoting Tyre Care During US Tire Safety Week

Goodyear is supporting National Tire Safety Week in the US – held between June 7 and 13, by highlighting the importance of correct tyre care. In promoting its efforts during the week, the American tyre major points out that tyres are second only to brakes in terms of importance as a safety feature on a vehicle – and only a third of motorists correctly check tyre inflation pressure.

Improper air pressure in tyres can lead to a multitude of problems, Goodyear notes. These range from uneven and accelerated tyre wear through to structural damage in a tyre. Furthermore, an under-inflated tyre also has the potential to affect tyre performance, including making a vehicle less fuel-efficient.

Pirelli “Home” WRC Leg a Formidable Challenge for Tyres

Pirelli has reported a “difficult” yet problem-less three days at the all-gravel Rally d’Italia-Sardegna, the tyre-manufacturer’s home event. Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala put the brakes on Sebastien Loeb’s domination of the 2009 World Rally Championship season to claim his first win of the year, while the five Pirelli Star Drivers took part in their second round of the six they will face in total, continuing their development in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Group N cars. On an event that gave all six youngsters some extremely valuable experience of rough gravel, up-and-coming Finn Jarkko Nikara emerged best-placed of the Pirelli Star Drivers. Pirelli’s Rally Manager Mario Isola said, “These very rough conditions also taught our five Star Drivers how to blend consistency with their obvious speed, which will serve them well in the future.”

National Tyres Launches Brakes and Exhaust Website

National Tyres has launched a new website marketing high performance automotive brake and exhaust parts. The project, located at www.n-tech.co.uk, is run in partnership with CES UK and EBC who also take care of the technical support aspect for exhausts and brakes respectively. According to EBC’s blog, the new website will be offering: “British made brake pads from the top selling Greenstuff, Redstuff and New Yellowstuff Street and track pads together with two options of EBC Sport discs to stop your car faster, smoother & safer.” The idea is for the site to market the products and then direct consumers to one of their 200 branches for professional fitting.

TRW Adds Shock Absorbers to PrOEquip Range

TRW has extended its vehicle spare parts line-up with the introduction of a shock absorber range. This addition to its “TRW PrOEquip” line-up, on the market in Europe since March 2009, offers coverage for 94 per cent of the European truck market. Manufacturers covered by the TRW PrOEquip range include BPW, DAF, Evobus, Fruehauf, Hendrickson, Iveco, Kässbohrer, MAN, Mercedes, Neoplan, ROR, RVI, SAF, Scania, Schmitz Cargobull, Van Hool and Volvo.

Brakes, steering and suspension products are already included in the TRW PrOEquip range and therefore the addition of shock absorbers is a logical development. The products are manufactured in the company’s European aftermarket factories.

Mondolfo Ferro Spreads its Wings

Founded in 1963 with the image of an eagle with its wings spread, Mondolfo Ferro specialises in the production of car tyres changers, wheel balancers, lifting platforms, wheels aligners, brakes and suspensions test benches, and exhaust systems analysers. Keen to publicise its innovative qualities, Mondolfo Ferro will be at the Autopromotec 2009 with its new wheel service products.

The Aquila Raptor is the new tyre changer with lever-less technology for mounting and demounting, making it possible, the company claims to eliminate risk and fatigue for the operator. It also believes the machine is operated intuitively helping to increase efficiency, rapidity and safety when operating on the rim or on the tyre. The Raptor boasts a centralised control console, a double-disc vertical bead breaker unit, which allows the bead breaking operation in the work position, and a safe and rapid wheel blocking pneumatic system.

The TBE 160 Matic truck tyre changer will also be presented. Conceived with lever-less technology, the machine can work with wheels with a rim diameter of up to 60” and a blocking system for the central hole of up to 110 mm. The main advantages of the TBE 160 Matic consist of the automated demounting tool and bead breaker. The machine also includes a self-supporting frame that guarantees greater freedom of movement for the operator by increasing the spaces around the machine.

Has Schaeffler Puts the Brakes on Merger With Conti Automotive?

Schaeffler has reportedly brought its plans to merge with Continental’s automotive wing to halt, according to Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper. “If synergies can be had without a major merger, then it would not put a strain on the organisation,” an unnamed source told the paper. However, the ball bearing maker’s spokesman confirmed, in an email to Bloomberg, that Schaeffler will: “Continue to work on the merger of both automotive operations…But it is certainly not a process that can be completed in the coming months.”

Earlier, Hubertus von Gruenberg, a former Continental AG chief executive, resigned following what the Financial Times (FT) called a “tumultuous meeting of the car-parts supplier’s board.”

Kwik-Fit Warns ‘Eco-Coasters’ Not to Lose Control

What risks would you take to save money? Kwik-Fit has expressed its concern about a growing group of motorists who chance damage to their vehicles (and themselves) do to just that. The fast fit chains calls such drivers ‘eco-coasters’, and its caution comes in response to research that shows some 5.4 million “financially prudent motorists’, 15 per cent of all UK drivers, have taken to selecting a neutral gear when going downhill – just to cut their fuel bills.

Skoda Launches Tyre Awareness Programme

Skoda retailers are offering free tyre checks at participating dealerships across the country. John Bower, head of aftersales at Skoda UK, commented: “Whilst anti-lock brakes, air bags, seatbelt pre-tensioning and ESP are common on most modern vehicles, the tyre is still perhaps the most important safety feature of all and we want our customers to be completely informed of this safety aspect.”

BERU f1systems Develops Infra Red Tyre Heat Sensor

BERU f1systems has developed a high resolution infra-red tyre sensor designed to help optimise vehicle set up and tyre performance in the wake of restricted F1 testing. According to the company, it is the first time a sensor providing temperature and pressure data unaffected by heat soak has been produced by BERU f1systems.

“Tyre temperature sensors are normally fitted to the rim as part of the valve,” says managing director John Bailey. “Heat soak from the rim and brakes distorts results leading to incorrect set up. Our system uses IR sensors to measure the inside temperature of the tyre itself, not just the air temperature.”

Conti to Focus on Debt Reduction

Continental AG reports the company is drawing what it calls ‘further necessary consequences for the closing fiscal year 2008’ following an extensive analysis of the substantial negative development that has taken place in the automotive industry in the six weeks to December 10. At the same time, the company is adapting operational measures for 2009 to the industry’s predictably poor economic environment. A cost-cutting programme, said by Conti to be in the ‘high three-digit millions range’ has been initiated; this programme includes the postponement of investments as well as the stretching of expenditures in the area of research and development.

Tests Confirm Conflicting Tyre Development Goals, Says Conti

When developing winter passenger car tyres for its premium brands, Continental AG says the most important consideration is how well brakes perform in one of the most commonly occurring yet critical road conditions for motorists in Western and Central Europe – wet road surfaces. An evaluation of the latest winter tyre test results reported by leading international trade magazines, reports Conti, confirms the wet-braking properties of tyres developed by the German manufacturer, which in most cases received the best scores within this particular category. In contrast, remarks Continental in a release, several competitor products and cheap Asian imports designed primarily for low rolling resistance were marked down for poor performance on wet surfaces.

Hitachi Capital Renews ATS 3-Year Euromaster Contract

ATS Euromaster has signed a major contract renewal with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, extending its agreement to supply Michelin tyres across the company’s car, light commercial vehicle and HGV fleet for a further three years. The agreement also sees ATS Euromaster providing a full-range of fast-fit services to Hitachi Capital’s car and light commercial vehicle customers, including batteries, bulbs, brakes, exhausts, shock absorbers and wipers.
