Maxxis unveils swish new sponsorship

In addition to the sponsorship of three Major League Baseball sponsorships, Maxxis announced that it will be an official partner of the New York Knicks basketball team for the season’s remaining games. During home games, Maxxis’ signage will appear courtside for 30 seconds of TV coverage on an LED board at Madison Square Garden. The Taiwanese manufacturer revealed that the form of Jeremy Lin had encouraged its decision to buy sponsorship of the New York team.

New position to strengthen Conti’s supply chain management

Continental AG has appointed Jürgen Braunstetter as head of the newly created command level function, Supply Chain Management Automotive – a position directly below Executive Board level. In this new position, Braunstetter takes on overall, across-the-board management of the supply chain for Continental’s three Automotive divisions. This involves coordination with the purchasing, quality and information technology departments. It is intended to further increase flexibility in the supply chain and allow for a faster response to market shifts.

Sonoco appoints former Michelin man

Global packaging company Sonoco has elected former Michelin North America president and chairman James M. Micali its independent lead director. Amongst other duties, in his new role Micali will preside at executive sessions of the company’s independent directors and at any Board meetings at which the chairman is not present. In addition, the he will confer with the chairman regarding Board meeting agendas, schedules and information sent to the Board.

Groundbreaking held for Sumitomo S-SBR plant

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Sumitomo Chemical’s new the new solution styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) plant in Singapore on the morning of 6 February. The plant is to be built in the Merbau area of Singapore’s Jurong Island and is expected to be complete in June 2013 and enter commercial operation in the fourth quarter of that year. The plant will have a 40,000 ton per annum capacity.

New CEO, COO at Bridgestone

Bridgestone Corporation has a new chief executive officer. On 11 January the company’s Board of Directors approved a number of senior personnel changes, including the appointment of Masaaki Tsuya to the role of CEO. Incumbent chairman of the Board, CEO and president Shoshi Arakawa will continue in the position of chairman of the Board, a role Bridgestone says has been “newly redefined”. The tyre maker has not named a successor to Arakawa as president.

Jürgen Benz – official comment from point S

The point S operation in Germany has released an official statement broaching the subject of Jürgen Benz’s unexpected departure from the company. In the German-language document, point S Deutschland GmbH says that on 7 December the company’s Board of Shareholders met with managing director Jürgen Benz and agreed that the two parties’ ideas regarding future collaboration differ too greatly, and thus by mutual consent it will end on 31 December, 2011.

Cucchiani resigns from Pirelli board

Following his nomination as chief executive officer of Italian banking group Intesa SanPaolo, Enrico Tommaso Cucchiani has tendered his resignation as a member of Pirelli & C. SpA’s Board of Directors. In announcing his resignation, Pirelli thanked Mr. Cucchiani for his “valuable contribution to the company.” Cucchiani served as a member of the Board since July 2007.

We Sell Tyres (Wholesale) MD Jackson retires

After 42 successful years in the tyre industry, Alan Jackson, managing director of Grouptyre member We Sell Tyres (Wholesale), has announced his retirement. Jackson’s successor will be Andy Zelos, who will take over as wholesale director from 1 January, 2012. Zelos has also joined the board of directors at Grouptyre. Jackson and Zelos have worked together for over twenty years, both at WS Tyremasters and subsequently at We Sell Tyres (Wholesale).

GKN names next chairman

As of the middle of next year, GKN plc will have a new chairman. The company announced the appointment of Michael J. Turner, CBE to replace Roy Brown, who intends to retire at the close of the GKN annual general meeting on 3 May 2012.

Profumo resigns from Pirelli BoD

Pirelli & C. SpA has announced the resignation of Francesco Profumo from the company’s Board of Directors. Mr. Profumo submitted his resignation following his appointment as Italy’s Minister of Education, Universities and Research in the government being set up under new Prime Minister Mario Monti. In a statement, Pirelli said it “wishes to thank Mr. Profumo, an independent Board member and member of the Strategies Committee, for his valuable contribution.”

Bridgestone Q3 punctuated by growth

Results for the third quarter of 2011 show across the board year-on-year improvements at Bridgestone. During the June to September period, the Japanese company achieved sales of 775.3 billion yen (£6.2 billion), a 9.9 per cent improvement over the same three months of 2010. Operating income reached 49.7 billion yen (£396.9 million) in the quarter, reflecting year-on-year growth of 42.4 per cent, while operating profit margin rose from 4.9 per cent to 6.4 per cent. Net income, at 27.8 billion yen (£222.0 million), was up 25.2 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2010.

Micheldever confirms Angus Smith appointment

Following the initial announcement last week, Micheldever Tyre Services Ltd has confirmed the appointment of Angus Smith to its board in the position of commercial director, effective from January 2012. Smith joins Michelever with years of experience at Continental Tyre Group culminating with work in the role of sales director.

And then there were two – ShengdaTech reports Board resignation

China-based nano-precipitated calcium carbonate manufacturer ShengdaTech, which in August filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code, reports the resignation of a member of its Board of Directors, Mr. Dongquan Zhang. The resignation took effect on October 8; at the same time, Zhang effectively resigned as a member of all standing ShengdaTech committees. The remaining members of the company's Board of Directors are A. Carl Mudd and Sheldon B. Saidman.

2011 a bumper year for graduate recruits at Conti

Earlier this year, Continental announced it would hire around 1,500 university graduates and young professionals for its global operations. The German tyre and automotive technology maker ended up hiring more than three times this amount – Continental reports that some 5,500 graduates and young professionals joined its ranks during the course of the year. This intake represents a substantial increase over last year, and Conti says hiring a larger number of graduates is part of its “ongoing efforts to invest in fresh knowledge and new ideas” which will, in turn, increase its innovative prowess.

Conti appoints new personnel director

Continental AG has appointed Elke Strathmann its new director of Personnel and appointed her a regular member of the company’s Executive Board. The tyre and automotive supplier says the 53-year old mathematician and human resources manager will take up her three-year contract position during the first quarter of 2012. Current Executive Board member for human resources, Heinz-Gerhard Wente, will henceforth concentrate on his duties as head of the ContiTech division plus take on responsibility for corporate purchasing in the Executive Board.
