Acquisition Of Two Japanese Brake Manufacturers By Continental

Continental Teves (Frankfort) – part of Continental AG (Hanover) – responsible for brake business, at the end of March, acquired two Japanese companies engaged in this field. The companies are Shin-Ei and ShinTec, former subsidiaries of the Mazda Motor Corporation. Continental’s Board Member, Dr. Wolfgang Ziebart, responsible for Continental Teves, said that this acquisition is another important step toward the goal of becoming a system supplier for mechanical and electronic brake systems in the markets of Japan and Korea.

New President For Snap-on Inc.

The American company Snap-on Inc., one of the biggest suppliers of workshop equipment and, among others, parent company of Hofmann Werkstatt-Technik, has appointed Dale F. Elliott as President. He succeeds Robert A. Cornog, who will stay as Chairman of the Board until the next shareholders meeting.

Conflict May Damage Stomil-Olsztyn

Ongoing rows between minority shareholders and main shareholder Michelin may have an adverse effect on company results for 2001. The company is already suffering from decreased demand, a weak Euro and rising raw materials costs. Benoit de la Breteche, president of Stomil’s board said “This year is going to be a difficult one and we should focus on business.”

New Director For Goodyear

James M. Zimmerman (57) has been elected to the board of directors of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. He joins the company from Federated Department Stores Inc., where he was chairman and CEO, and has extensive experience in retail. It was also announced that Katherine G. Farley, senior managing director of Tishman Speyer Properties Inc., has resigned from the Goodyear board after three years’ service.

Confidence In Bridgestone And Firestone

John Lampe has spent all his working life with Firestone and then Bridgestone/Firestone. He has recently been put in charge of the Bridgestone group’s largest subsidiary, Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. in the USA. In addition – and this is a first for Bridgestone and very rare for large Japanese businesses – Lampe sits on the board. This illustrates how highly he is thought of in what are difficult times for the company. In our exclusive interview, he talks of the relationship between Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. and Ford. However, since the interview, this attitude changed dramatically, with Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. ending its business relationship with Ford. Board Appointment For Goodyear

Philip A. Laskawy, (60) who retired as chairman and chief executive officer of Ernst & Young LLP on June 30, has been elected to the board of directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. “Mr. Laskawy successfully led Ernst & Young’s re-engineering effort that resulted in higher levels of customer service, greater diversity and outstanding revenue growth,” said Goodyear chairman and CEO Samir G. Gibara. “His experience and focus on change management will be a valuable addition to our Board as Goodyear seeks to get even closer to its customers.”

New President And CEO Appointed By Hayes Lemmerz

Hayes Lemmerz Int. appointed Curtis J. Clawson as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. In connection with Clawson’s appointment, Ranko “Ron” Cucuz, the Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, will remain as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Most recently, Clawson was President and Chief Operating Officer of American National Can Group, a $2.5 billion NYSE traded manufacturing company, which was acquired by Rexam PLC.

Conti CEO Kessel Resigns

CEO of the Continental Board, Dr. Stephan Kessel (47), has resigned and left the company. The Supervisory Board announced his successor as Manfred Wennemer (53). Wennemer was formerly responsible for the ContiTech division.

Temporary Pay Cut For Bridgestone Board

Following the profits warning issued by Bridgestone, the company’s directors have taken a 30 per cent pay cut for four months and there will be no bonuses for senior executives. President Yoichiro Kaizaki said that there are no plans to reduce wages of workers in the USA, despite the fact that Firestone is expected to record a loss this year of US$ 500 million. Looking at the prospects for the Bridgestone group, Mr. Kaizaki predicted a net profit for 2001 of 48 billion Yen.

8th Tyres/Chassis/Tracks Conference in Hanover

Home match for Continental: Not enough that the company’s head of Tyre R&D and Process Engineering, Heinrich Huinik, had been the chairman of the organising committee for the 8th VDI (association of German engineers) Tyres/Chassis/Tracks conference, the tyre manufacturer, which, after the reorganisation process in recent years regards itself as a whole service supplier, had been on the agenda for both several specialised and the two plenary lectures too. Thus, it was no surprise when, using the slogan”Global Chassis Control”, Dr. Wolfgang Ziebart, member of Conti’s Executive Board, again picked out their system network as a central theme in his plenary lecture. Another main topic of the conference in Hanover was the specialised field of “System Integration” which had twice the number of lectures than all other specialised meetings, titled “Track-Tyre-Interaction”, “Tyres”, “Tyre Modelling”, Chassis Simulation” and “Chassis Systems”.

Retiring from the board: Yoichiro Kaizaki, president, chairman and CEO, Tadakazu Harada, executive vice president, Katsuyooshi Shibata, executive vice president, president of Bridgestone Cycle Co. and Hiroji Ohbuchi, president of Bridgestone Tire Osaka Sales Co. Shibata will continue as president, Bridgestone Cycle Co. and Ohbuchi as president of Bridgestone Tire Osaka Sales Co. after 29 March.

Changes in Goodyear Management

Edward T. Fogarty (62), former Chairman, President and CEO of Tambrands, Inc., has been elected to the twelve-strong board of Directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Comp. After 37 years of service James Boyaziz (63) will retire on July 31, his responsibilities as Corporate Secretary will be assumed by C. Thomas Harvie (57), who is currently Senior Vice President and General Counsel.

Successful Dunlop Cloverleaf Comes To An End

Dr. Volker Wingefeld (49), Finance Director of Dunlop GmbH, is leaving the company within the next few weeks to join the board of Buderus AG, responsible for finance. Dr. Manfred Gerresheim (61), board member responsible for technical development and Robert Schäfer (61), chief executive of Dunlop, are considering leaving at the end of this year. The Dunlop management team is completed by its fourth member, Hans-Jürgen Wagner and, during the 90s, was very successful, turning in several record profits in a row.
