Toyo’s Team Members Win at World Championship Off-Road Races

In the US, Team Toyo Off-Road drivers competing on Toyo Open Country M/T tyres had a great Labour Day weekend during the BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Races at Crandon International Raceway in Wisconsin. Considered one of the biggest events on the 2007 Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing calendar, Team Toyo Off-Road drivers Curt LeDuc, Dave Waldvogel and Mike Vanden Heuvel all won races over the course of the weekend.

After this big Labor Day weekend, the Super Stock Truck class continues to have a nail-biting championship-points battle between Team Toyo Off-Road drivers Ben Wandahsega and Dave Waldvogel. During Saturday’s race, Waldvogel won his race driving his Bendix/Toyo Tires Chevy truck, while Wandahsega finished an uncharacteristic fifth place in his Forest County Potawatomi/Toyo Tires Chevy truck.

Keeping Swimmers Safe with Goodyear

Motorists who buy Goodyear tyres will be helping to keep the Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s (RNLI) fundraising efforts afloat. Goodyear has joined forces with the prominent UK safety charity to help fund the RNLI’s vital lifesaving training, and every purchase of a set of Goodyear HydraGrip rain tyres – a product that independent tests have shown can reduce stopping distances in wet conditions – will see a donation of £2 go to the RNLI’s innovative training programme.

Goodyear brand manager Ben Crawley is delighted to be supporting the cause. “The RNLI is a fantastic example of an organisation with an innovative approach to safety and we are working with the charity to help fund and highlight its state-of-the-art training programme to ensure that volunteers get the best possible support…….we will also be looking to support the charity in many other ways.”

BEN Sets Sail for Charity

This year the automotive industry charity BEN will make its debut in an extremely demanding event, the notoriously gruelling ‘Rolex Fastnet yacht race’. The BEN entry into the 608 miles race, which starts on August 12, is being made in the form of a joint team effort along with Business Development & Marketing Ltd. (BDM), and the combined crew will be sailing on a 60-foot yacht called L’isme.

The entry has been arranged by Mike Surridge, managing director of BDM, an organisation working predominately within the automotive sector. When not wearing his managing director’s hat Mike Surridge is a commercially qualified and experienced skipper with a number of passages, races and teaching experiences under his ‘keel’. By entering in the race the crew of 8 guests and 2 core crew members will raise £9500 for BEN.

Macgowan to Step Down as SMMT Chief at End of 2007

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan will leave the Society at the end of the year. His decision to step down on 31 December was announced at an SMMT board of directors’ meeting. “It will be business as usual for the next seven months and I intend to leave at the top of my game,” commented Macgowan. “

“It has been a privilege working for the industry in this crucial role and I have enjoyed every moment of my nine years with the Society. However, the fact is I have reached a point in my life where I want to do a number of different things, not just one full-on job. Being chief executive of the SMMT is arguably the best job in the industry, but it is also all-consuming. So come 1 January 2008, I am going plural.”

SMMT president Graham Smith added: “Christopher is widely known and respected throughout the industry. On behalf of the SMMT I would like to thank him for his significant contribution, not only to the industry, but also to the effectiveness and strength of the Society. We will miss him and he will not be an easy act to follow.”

BEN’s UK 5-a-side 2007 Football Championship

BEN’s UK 5-a-side Football Championship is back. After a huge success in 2006, in which over 100 teams competed, one of the largest automotive industry tournaments is returning. Held at 9 venues across the UK, this event aims to raise awareness of BEN – the automotive industry charity and raise much needed funds. Once again the event will be run in conjunction with Powerleague, the UK’s largest provider of 5-a-side football and will culminate in a free UK Final for those who progress through.

This Championship is one of the few industry events where company teams from all automotive sectors can participate. In short, the team that wins this event is truly the automotive champions.

Win a Harley-Davidson

BEN, the Automotive Industry Charity, in Association with Harley-Davidson Motorcycles will be launching its National Bike Draw from Tuesday 24 April. The XL883 Sportster, which has been donated by Harley-Davidson Europe, is described as a pure and unadulterated street machine, an ideal entry level motorcycle for those joining the Harley-Davidson family. With its 883cc V-twin Evolution engine it has the addition of fuel injection for the 2007 model year. Tickets priced at £2 each can be purchased from Kelly Neal at BEN. N.E. Tyre & Exhausts Appoints New Sales & Marketing Director

Following the retirement of incumbent sales director John Hardiman in March, North Eastern Tyre & Exhausts Limited have announced the appointment of Ben Darcy as their new sales and marketing director. Ben joined the company after completing university studies seven years ago and will draw on the experience gained during this time to play a key role in the business’s future development and strategic development.

Give Your Old Phone a New Home

Unipart has joined forces with automotive industry charity BEN to set up a recycling service for unwanted mobile phones. Collection points will be installed across Unipart’s sites and BEN will mail 25,000 pre-paid envelopes to its supporters encouraging them to join in.

For each phone received, Unipart will donate £3 to BEN, helping them carry out their work. Unipart Group Chief Executive, John Neill, said: “BEN is a charity close to our hearts at Unipart because of our automotive industry heritage.

Racing Car Rolls on Potato Tyres

Researchers at the University of Warwick have developed a racing car that is perhaps as tasty as it is fast. The environmentally friendly vehicle, the brainchild of the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), a research think tank and solution provider based at the university, has tyres made from potatoes and brake pads from cashew nut shells. The car also runs on bio fuels and bio lubricants.

The racer was originally designed with a top speed of 125mph, but following ‘tweaking’ by project manager Ben Wood it is now capable of speeds as high as 150mpg, provided there is a straight road and a tailwind available.

Goodyear Launches Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Goodyear has launched a new tyre designed to replace the much vaunted Eagle F1 GSD3, which scored top marks in almost every test going – including Auto Express, Autocar, Max Power, Evo and Which? But while the old tyre’s symmetrical tread design was key to the product’s success, Goodyear is expecting the new product to succeed exactly because it isn’t. In addition to an asymmetrical tread design, the Eagle F1 Assymmetric features an asymmetric casing construction designed to reinforce one side and squeeze more grip from the tyre. Goodyear representatives told Tyres & Accessories they were gearing up for more award success following the introduction of the ‘Active Cornergrip Technology’ into the design of its latest tyre.

BEN: ‘Fund Us or Lose Us’

BEN, the automotive industry charity, is facing a deficit of up to £750,000 in its financial year to 31 March after tough market conditions, a drop off in legacy donations and plant closures like Longbridge and Ryton hit its fundraising income. Already BEN has been forced to close its Palliative Care Unit at its Alexandra House care centre in Southport, a move that will cut costs by £150,000 per year through staff redundancies and internal changes.

BEN’s Autosport Stand Features Le Mans Winners

The NEC in Birmingham will be brimming with nostalgia and the spell of Le Mans on 13 & 14 January as one of the most significant displays of Le Mans cars ever assembled will be reunited with their legendary drivers, at Autosport International. The Le Mans feature, in association with BEN and Motor Sport magazine, will reunite the famous drivers with their famous cars, tracing the history of this near-mythical race from its very beginnings in 1923.

New Vice Presidents Named at BEN

Motor industry figures, Freddie Aldous, Honorary Life President of the BVRLA, and Sarah Sillars, Chief Executive of the IMI have been elected by BEN’s Board of Trustees as Vice Presidents for the financial year 2006/2007. BEN’s Chief Executive, Gerard Barclay, was delighted to announce these appointments stating: “Whilst last year was successful financially for BEN, the first 6 months of this financial year are proving more challenging. I am therefore delighted that we have enlisted the support of two such eminent individuals from different sectors of our industry and I feel this goes to show the breadth of support that could be available for BEN.”

Fulda Exelero to be Feature at MPH ‘06

Fulda Exelero, the German ultra-high-performance tyre, will be showing off its capabilities at the MPH Shows, to be held at Birmingham NEC on 26-29 October and at Earls Court, London on 2-5 November. Following Fulda’s performance in last year’s ‘MPH’ live demonstration show, international racing driver, Ben Collins, is to drive a Vauxhall Monaro in a hair raising fight sequence with a Ninja. Fulda Exeleros will be fitted to the Vauxhall.

Motaquip Celebrates 25 Years

The aftermarket parts supplier Motaquip recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a black tie gala dinner in the magnificent surroundings of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, where 130 guests enjoyed a champagne reception before taking their seats in the Grand Hall for dinner.
