Al-Dobowi opens 200 million dirham battery plant

Eternity Technologies FZ LLC plant, owned by the Al Dobowi Group, has been launched with an investment of 200 million dirhams ($54.6million). According to the company, it is the Gulf region’s largest industrial battery plant and will design and develop batteries for use in electric fork lift trucks, industrial cleaning machines, access platforms and personnel transport. The plant will be situated in the Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA) Industrial Park in Al Jazeera Al Hamra and will have the capacity to produce one million 2-volt cells. The company plans to export 85 per cent of its output to global markets including US, Europe and Asia, apart from servicing the UAE and GCC countries.

Tyre firms eye Saudi Arabia as strategic growth market

With more than 13 million tyres being imported annually and a market that is set to grow by 12 per cent each year (according to the US commercial service), Saudi Arabia is the largest market for tyres and tubes in the Middle East region. This growth, fuelled by an ecomomy riding on high oil prices, high disposable incomes and an appetite for all things automobile, means that the Kingdom is firmly in the sights of tyre and tube manufacturers worldwide.

Survey: Thailand home to 3,200 tyre shops

New research suggests that Thailand is home to some 3,200 tyre shops. And what’s more roughly 50 per cent of fast fits are based in the Thai capital of Bangkok. According to research, which was conducted by well known market data analysts GfK, the automotive industry is on a roll, particularly in Thailand, which recorded a 47-month high of domestic automobile sales last November.

In response GfK recently launched its automotive business in Thailand, tracking sales of replacement passenger car tyres and batteries. According to GfK’s latest findings, while tyre specialists are “uniformly spread out across the country,” fast fit outlets make up a third of all shops and are more commonly found in Bangkok area where demand tends to be higher compared to the other regions.

EC approves switchable battery research project

Automotive supplier Continental and ten other European and Israeli companies active in the electric vehicle sector, have joined together to form ‘Easybat’, a consortium dedicated to furthering EV development. On March 2 the consortium announced formal approval from the European Commission for a research and development programme into means of facilitating the European production of electric cars with switchable batteries. The March 2 announcement is the first switchable battery electric car project approved by the Commission.

Nissan builds battery plant

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has begun construction of a state-of-the-art, advanced lithium-ion battery plant in Cacia, Portugal to support the rollout of electric vehicles from the Renault-Nissan Alliance in Europe, reports the headlineauto website. The battery plant is being built on a 30,450 sq. m. plot of land belonging to the Renault CACIA gearbox assembly plant following an investment of 156 million euros. The facility will start operations in December 2012 and will have a total capacity of 50,000 units a year. About 200 jobs are expected to be created by the new plant.

Conti sensor helps EV users avoid a shocking experience

Many batteries in electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles generate some 400 volts, almost twice the voltage employed in standard domestic plug sockets and enough to give a potentially fatal jolt. Vehicle occupants risk exposure to this electric charge in the event of an accident, and US legislators have already stipulated that vehicle power supply voltage must drop to below 60 volts within five seconds of an accident occurring. No comparable laws yet exist in European markets, yet Germany’s Continental is switched onto the challenge of reducing electric vehicle battery voltage to safer levels following a collision. The automotive supplier has now come up with the evSAT, a sensor that will immediately shut off high-voltage batteries in the event of a collision while the vehicle is in charge mode, enabling emergency service personnel to recover the vehicle without the risk of receiving an electric shock.

TPMS is the future, says Autogem

In order to prosper in today's competitive market, a company needs to be able to identify trends and wholeheartedly embrace new opportunities. A good example of this is Autogem, which used to be a market leader in the supply of exhaust fittings and workshop consumables, but which is now regarded as an authority on tyre pressure monitoring systems.

While it is true that all run-flat tyres must have some form of TPMS, the number is still comparatively small. However, says Prashant Chopra, managing partner at Autogem, this will all change, as from November 2012, a European Directive states that all new category M1 vehicles will have to be fitted with TPMS.

And it has to be said that some vehicle manufacturers have earned themselves more of a reputation in this respect that others. New HawksHead RV TPMS

On 30 January 2011 HawksHead TPMS launched a new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) designed “for the serious RVer.” According to the company, the system can monitor tyre pressures and temperatures for motor homes and trucks along with their towed vehicle if needed, the system is also ideal for travel trailers, fifth wheels, enclosed and flatbed trailers. Fleet MoTs, Servicing Kwik-Fit Growth Areas in 2010

Demand from fleet customers for mechanical work on company cars and vans at Kwik-Fit is said to be soaring. The fast fitter comments that operators are looking to reduce operating costs and this appears to be a significant contributor towards Kwik-Fit’s record breaking 2010. The company reports that demand for MoTs, vehicle servicing and brake part replacement rose by up to almost 50 per cent last year, and in 2011 a “core goal” is to further increase the volume of mechanical and MoT fleet work performed through Kwik-Fit centres.

Apollo Launches Commercial Range in Bangladesh

India’s Apollo Tyres has begun commercial vehicle tyre exports to neighbouring Bangladesh. Initial sales will focus on cross-ply tyres for heavy and light commercial vehicles and these products will be distributed through the Rahimafrooz Group, Bangladesh’s largest manufacturer and distributor of automotive and industrial batteries.
