Stapleton’s: TAFF Award is Huge Vote of Confidence

Stapleton’s beat off stiff competition to be named as Tyre Wholesaler of the Year at the NTDA Tyre and Fast Fit Awards 2010, which was held at Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate alongside the Brityrex International exhibition in the Manchester Central conference centre on 6 October 2010. The title tops a positive year for the company, which has seen it acquire previously Pirelli-owned wholesale operation CPK and achieve total sales of over £300 million.

Kumho Receives Special Commendation for its Football Sponsorship

Korean manufacturer Kumho has been recognised in conjunction with Manchester United Football Club – which the company sponsors – for their ‘Play Safer’ programme; a road safety scheme run with a football theme and backed by Greater Manchester Police. The tyre-maker received a Special Commendation Award in the Best Club Sponsorship category at the Northwest Football Awards 2010, held at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s conference and cricket-watching venue The Point.

Micheldever Jumps to 90th in Sunday Times Top Track 250

Recent growth at the Micheldever Group has driven the firm up to 90th place in the prestigious Sunday Times Top Track 250 list of the most successful mid-market privately owned companies. With just the Top Track 100 of the biggest private companies in the UK above it, this puts progress in the business into context. Micheldever first entered the Sunday Times list in 2006 in 184th position and in the intervening three years has jumped an amazing 94 places with the group’s sales in the last financial year reaching over £275 million.

Bridgestone, Stapleton’s Among the Winners at 2010 TAFF Awards

The Tyre and Fast Fit Awards are now a well-established feature of the UK tyre industry calendar, with winners announced during the NTDA’s Annual Dinner in the grand environs of Manchester’s Beetham Tower. Bridgestone UK was awarded Tyre Manufacturer of the Year, while Stapleton’s was the winner of the coveted Tyre Wholesaler of the Year gong. Other awards presented during the evening were the Tyre & Aftermarket Equipment Supplier of the Year, which went to Apaseal; the Environment Award, going to Envirotyre; the Innovation Award, given to Michelin’s X One MaxiTrailer Tyre; and the Industry Advertising Campaign, awarded in conjunction with Tyres & Accessories as TAFF media partner to Continental for its Don’t Miss the Big Game campaign, based on the company’s World Cup football sponsorship.

Van Service Award a 2010 Hat-Trick for Kwik-Fit Fleet

A concerted focus on helping businesses reduce operating costs and improve efficiency has helped Kwik-Fit Fleet secure a third award for 2010, this time from industry publication Fleet Van. At the Fleet Van Awards 2010 ceremony, held in London on October 6, the fast-fit provider was confirmed as this year’s Van Service and Repair Company of the Year. The latest gong to come Kwik-Fit Fleet’s way joins accolades earned in the BusinessCar Awards and from LeasePlan UK earlier in the year.

Bridgestone’s Hispania Burgos Plant wins Mobility Week Award

European Mobility Week is an EU backed awareness raising campaign aiming at “sensibilising citizens to the use of public transport, cycling, walking and at encouraging European cities to promote these modes of transport and to invest in the new necessary infrastructures.” Held between September 16 and 22, the 2010 event attracted the attention of national and local authorities throughout the region, and cities and businesses that excelled in a particular area were awarded for their accomplishments. One such award recipient is Bridgestone, whose Hispania Burgos Plant won Spain’s European Mobility Week Award for “Best Practices”. This award, the tyre maker comments, recognises Bridgestone’s policies in the area of sustainable mobility and its commitment to raising awareness for the impact of how we move on both the environment and quality of life generally.

Micheldever Continues Growth Despite Turbulent Market

Leading tyre wholesale operation Micheldever Tyres Services reports that it has increased unit sales despite the difficulties of selling in a market beset with recessionary pressures. This year the company expects sales of 6 million tyres – equivalent to just under 20 per cent of the total UK market – with an annual turnover of over £300 million. Not bad for a company that was bought from its founder Tony Todd in a reported £85 million deal just four years ago. When Tyres & Accessories spoke to wholesale director Alan Baldwin he revealed that these unit sales are set to include 1.2 million Kumho tyres. So does this figure reflect a market move to the mid-range as other sources suggest?

TAFF Wholesaler of the Year Nominee Committed to Providing One-Stop Solution

Grouptyre and its 13 member companies report that as they continue to invest in key areas such as warehousing, distribution and IT, they are achieving key operating efficiencies. And this is said to be making it easier for retailers to do business with Grouptyre, which the company believes played a part in Grouptyre’s nomination for the 2010 TAFF Wholesaler of the Year Award.

“We are delighted to be in the running for Wholesaler of the Year once again,” says Grouptyre’s managing director Karl Naylor. “It is a major achievement and a good indication of how our ongoing investment in many areas of the business, our commitment to developing the supply chain and our continuing efforts to capitalise on our service offer are being received by the trade at large.”

Continental E-invoicing System Nominated for Industry Oscars

Continental’s E-invoicing system not only won the innovation awards at this year’s Reifen Essen 2010 in June, but was also nominated for one of the NTDA’s Tyre and Fast Fit (TAFF) awards here in the UK. So what’s all the fuss about? Continental’s new electronic invoicing system, which provides improved recording and exchange of invoicing and credit notes between Continental and customers, is designed to make business life easier, but it also shows the company’s environmental credentials.

For some time Continental has been working to reduce complexity and wastage in its back office solutions to make life simpler for customers and reduce the effect on the environment. The introduction in 2010 of a new electronic invoicing system that provides improved recording and exchange of invoices and credit notes between Continental and tyre retail customers is said to have achieved this. And savings on paper and transport both have positive effects on both economy and protecting the environment.

Klarius Chairman Named Entrepreneur of the Year

Tony Wilson Chairman and COO of the Klarius Group has been named Entrepreneur of the Year by a panel of judges acting on behalf of EN magazine, which bills itself as ‘the magazine for Entrepreneurs.” Wilson is credited with purchasing and swiftly returning to profitability the emissions control division of Arvin Meritor in 2007. He then repeated the move with the larger £300 million turnover Quinton Hazell buyout in February of this year, and reportedly returned that part of the business to profitability within three months.

Maxxis Again One of Taiwan’s Top Brands

For the eighth straight year, Maxxis has been listed on Interbrand’s ranking of Taiwan’s top 20 global brands, reports Tire Review. The company placed seventh for 2010, and was again the only tyre-maker on the list. Maxxis’ brand value was assessed at $391 million, an increase of 13 per cent from the previous year.

Cooper Tire Continues ‘Happy Soccer Class’ at Yellow Mountain

In China, Cooper Tire has been continuing a series of measures designed to integrate the company into the communities in which it operates. One such programme is Cooper’s ‘Happy Soccer Class’ which recently saw Alex Koi, general manager of Cooper Tire China operations, lead his team of employees to Tanjiaqiao Central Primary School in Huangshan, also known as the Yellow Mountain, Anhui province. Since January 2010, Cooper Tire working closely with famous soccer commentator Huang Jianxiang, officially launched the Cooper Tires charity soccer with the theme of ‘The wheel of Joy – happy soccer class’. This campaign aims to teach soccer skills to the children.

October’s Brityrex to be a “Full House”

October’s Brityrex International ‘10 show in Manchester is a sell-out, with all exhibitor stands taken, according to organisers ECI International. The news follows a run of late confirmations including: SD International, Gripen Wheels, Marix UK; Ayce Systems and aircon supplier Autoclimate. Market analysts Encircle Marketing, tyre education operation TEFORS, Banner Batteries, Strongman Tools and Straightset are also said to be on board.

NTDA Annual Dinner a Sell Out

The National Tyre Distributors Association has revealed that its Annual Dinner and Taff Awards Gala night is a sell-out, with six weeks still to go until the event. “Interest in the Dinner has been unprecedented and we are delighted that we have a full house, although we have taken steps to limit numbers to ensure the room will be comfortable for guests,” said director Richard Edy.

Which? Presents Continental with Best Tyre Brand Accolade

Outstanding results in Which? magazine’s tyre tests have given Continental the title of best tyre brand. The leading consumer publication picked out Continental’s “excellent” dry grip and “very good” wet grip as the brand’s major positive characteristics. Brand manager, Tracey Hyem said; “To come out as the top tyre brand tested really shows the all round ability and quality of our products and we are incredibly pleased with the result. Which? magazine considers its ‘Best Buys’ very carefully, putting the tyres through stringent tests, so this really is an excellent result for Continental.”
