Bridgestone previews Catalan MotoGP

Bridgestone will take its medium and hard front and asymmetric rear slick compounds to the Circuit de Catalunya for the 5 June running of the Catalan Grand Prix, MotoGP’s fifth round of the 2011 season. The tyre manufacturer anticipates one of the toughest races of the year for its rear tyres because of the very high tyre temperature generated by the predominantly right-handed layout of the circuit; it has eight right-handers, most of which are fast and flowing. It is specifically turn three and the last three corners that generate the high rear tyre temperature as they are fast and long and the tyres spend a lot of time leant over on their right side. Turn three is also uphill so riders open the throttle earlier to maximise drive on the incline.

Conti supports football, wary of things that ‘negatively affect World Cup’

While Fifa president Sep Blatter looks likely to have steered himself to a fourth term at the helm of the good ship football, there is growing disquiet amongst world football key sponsors following allegations of corruption in the association’s World Cup and even presidential selection processes. Despite Blatter’s claims that “I am the captain of this ship and we are weathering the storm” one by one the leading sponsors have been voicing their own views. With this in mind Tyres & Accessories asked World Cup 2014 sponsor Continental for its take on the situation.

The answer came in the form of an intricately worded statement that came out in clear support of football and the kind of sponsorship support the tyre and automotive manufacturer has invested heavily in up till now, but also hinted at the firm’s unhappiness with the current controversy. While Conti highlighted the fact that is has been “supporting professional soccer for more than 15 years with passion and engagement” the manufacturer also said it “cannot approve of anything that negatively affects the reputation of professional soccer, the World Cup 2014 or the characteristics of this sport.”

Maxxis promotes Santa Pod Performance Vauxhall show with ticket offer

German biking magazine awards Bridgestone Battlax BT-016 Pro Hypersport

Germany’s PS motorcycle sport magazine has released its 2011 tyre test results, with Bridgestone’s Battlax BT-016 Battlax BT-016 Pro Hypersport receiving top honours. The full wet and dry evaluation of size 120/70 ZR 17 (front) and 180/55 ZR 17 (rear) on a Honda CBR 600 RR with ABS was conducted on an international testing circuit in southern Europe in spring 2011.

ATS Euromaster wins Van Fleet award for winter tyre hotels

ATS Euromaster has won the Innovation Award in the 2011 Van Fleet World Honours, after becoming the first national fast-fit provider to launch a fully managed cold weather tyre service for UK fleets. The company has reportedly doubled its budgeted investment in winter tyre stocks for the next seasons following the success attained last year. Last year the Michelin-owned retail business ordered £3 million worth of winter tyre stock (subscribers, see related news link below by clicking more).

Government acclaim for Yokohama inner liner development

Two Yokohama Rubber employees have been acknowledged by Japan’s government for their work on developing tyre inner liner technology. Yuichi Hara and Yoshiaki Hashimura, both research and development managers at Yokohama, received “Commendations for Science and Technology” from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science. The awards were given in the development category for developing a tyre inner liner that possesses a balance between the low air permeability of resin and the flexibility offered by rubber, thereby substantially reducing air leakage despite being only 20 per cent as thick as a conventional liner. The product developed by the pair and their research teams was released in 2009 under the name Advanced inner liner.

Second tyre recyclers innovation award to be presented in June

Leading companies and individuals involved with end of life tyres are to have their efforts recognised by the industry. The second Michelin Innovation Award will be presented at the Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) annual dinner on Friday 17 June. The award will be presented to the company or person judged to have made the most significant innovation in this key area of the industry.

Pirelli picks up Chinese ‘best marketing’ award

Pirelli reports it recently won the “best marketing” category of the 2011 China Auto Aftersales Summit Forum awards – an award the tyre maker describes as “one of the most influential awards in the auto industry.” In total, five categories of award were announced at the forum, which is hosted by the China Automobile Manufacturers Association, China Automotive Engineers Society, China International Trade Committee Automotive Branch, China Automotive Technology and Research Center and Motor Trend magazine.

Administrators confirm Envirotyre asset sale

RSM Tenon, the company responsible for administrating Envirotyre, a Carlisle-based company specialising in the processing and reclamation of waste tyres, has confirmed that Envirotyre is in administration and that an asset sale has been initiated. The administrators also confirmed that the business has ceased trading and all 30 jobs have been made redundant.

Envirotyre based in Carlisle is not to be confused with Envirotyre UK Ltd based in Boston, which serves the tyre industry (collection and recycling of all waste tyres) in Central and Eastern England. Following the initial reports of the administration of its Carlisle-based namesake, directors of Envirotyre UK wrote to Tyres & Accessories explaining that the Boston-based business “is in no way connected to Envirotyre Ltd based in Cumbria.” This Central and Eastern English business run by Envirotyre UK Ltd “continues to trade normally” according to company director Richard King.

TAFF Award winner Envirotyre in administration

The North of England and Scotland’s largest tyre collection firm, Envirotyre, has gone into administration according to various reports. Based on the Kingmoor Industrial Estate in Carlisle, the company provides tyre disposal services to around 1,500 tyre outlets across the region, and was the recipient of the 2010 TAFF Environment Award. Local news source, Carlisle’s News & Star says that the company’s administrators RSM Tenon is urging interested buyers to come forward for the company’s assets, valued at £1.822 million at the beginning of 2010. The company also possesses the UK licence for the Compactyre technology, a “patented, hydraulically-driven compactor that punctures and compresses a tyre to less than one-quarter of its original size”, making waste tyres easier to handle.

Stapleton’s invests to supply the right van tyre

Long established as a leading UK tyre distributor, and named Tyre Wholesaler of the Year at the NTDA Tyre and Fast Fit Awards 2010, Stapleton’s reports it has continued to place an emphasis on customer needs in 2011. This emphasis includes a focus on the company’s product portfolio and in ensuring the needs of both large and small van operators are catered for. The result, says Stapleton’s, is an even broader range that encompasses all van tyre sizes – including premium brands as well as a comprehensive range of mid-price and budget products. The company plans to continue developing its van tyre sector further still throughout the remainder of 2011 in line with its overriding ‘working for the customer’ philosophy.

JT Motor owner is UK’s Top Technician

Chelmsford mechanic John Tinham has been named the winner of Top Technician 2011, winning the prize a second time after his victory in 2005. Tinham won the prize after completing a series of online, practical and written tests set by chief judge Ian Gillgrass, accreditation manager at the Institute of the Motor Industry and his team of expert judges including 2008 Top Technician winner Mark Banks and Delphi trainers Rob Lewis and Tim Roberts. The annual competition aims to recognise and reward the best automotive technicians in the UK.

Queen’s Award for Enterprise presented to Dunlop Aircraft Tyre

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the international trade category, following six consecutive years of growth in its international sales. Based in Birmingham, and with a rich history spanning over 100 years DATL’s chairman Ian Edmondson expressed the company’s satisfaction with the reception of the prestigious award: “We are delighted that our achievements have been recognised with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. It is a great honour for both the company and the people that work here.”
