Cool Performance in Cold Weather

Avon Tyres has expanded its already sizeable winter range programme with the addition of new sizes to fit a broad variety of popular high performance cars and 4x4s. Introduced to tackle the precarious driving conditions motorists face from November onwards, the Ice Touring ST and the Ranger Ice have been introduced for high performance saloon cars and 4x4s, respectively.

The Ice Touring ST’s wide, low profile design combined with its specially-engineered tread pattern delivers sure-footed grip and handling in winter temperatures. Its high silica content, together with extensive siping, helps keep the tread blocks flexible at very low winter temperatures, which aids grip in the wet and traction in the snow. Wide spacing of the tread blocks also helps prevent the tread clogging up with snow.

New Sizes Boost Avon Roadrider Range

Avon Tyres has increased the range of its general purpose Roadrider range to 33 sizes, and the company now claims there is a Roadrider tyre for every bike from a Triumph T140 Bonneville right through to Honda’s CB500.

Drawing upon the company’s sports pedigree and construction methods developed from its high-performance range of tyres, the technicians at Avon have designed a multi-arc tread profile for the Roadrider that Avon says forces the biggest possible contact patch onto the road, whatever the lean angle. The need for light and precise handling whilst moving at slow speeds through traffic also called for an advanced casing design to give low rolling resistance and positive feel.

Steve Cundy to Head Cooper Passenger Car Division

Steve Cundy, European Business Development Director, has been named the new head of Cooper Tire’s UK passenger car sales team. Cundy, a veteran of 36 years, first with Avon Tyres and then with Cooper Tire Europe, will have overall responsibility for Avon and Cooper brand replacement tyre sales for the sector. The new role will be in addition to Steve’s existing European Business Development, OE and Private Brand responsibilities.

Two other long-serving Cooper men will report directly to Steve Cundy in his new role. They are National Accounts Director, Ian Daniels, who has been with the company for 19 years, and Jason Clarke, UK Sales Manager for Regional Accounts, who has notched up nine years of service.

Cooper’s National Accounts team will also receive some new blood in the shape of James Steventon and Adrian Aynsley, who have joined as National Accounts Managers.

Peter Harries to Head-Up Group Tyre

Peter Harries has been officially named as the new managing director of leading independent wholesale group, Group Tyre (UK) Ltd. Prior to joining Group Tyre, Harries spent six years as sales director of Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe. Before this he spent more than two decades in a range of positions with Avon Tyres and Cooper Tire. “I am very excited to be joining Group, a company which I have always admired,” Harries told Tyres & Accessories, adding that he has joined the company at a significant point. “There is a lot of change in tyre industry,” he commented.

Previously, group tyre had been run by its former chairman, John Church, until he stepped down on 1 April 2006 due to health reasons. In the interim Larry Cross (coordinating director), Karl Naylor, (director of commercial operations), Nick Manning (director of purchasing), and John Dunleavy (financial controller) took responsibility for maintain continuity.

Avon Shows Appreciation to Race Marshals

The tireless work of motorsport marshals, the unpaid and often unsung behind the scenes workers at motor racing events, has been acknowledged by Avon tyres and MotorSport Vision Racing. Marshals in possession of a MSVR membership card are now entitled to a 15 per cent discount on any new set of Avon Tyres purchased from a National Tyres outlet. Discounts on other services offered by National Tyres are also available as part of the programme.

“Those of us lucky enough to race cars are indebted to the unpaid work these people do,” explained Julian Baldwin, managing director of Cooper Tire Europe and head of Avon Tyres motorsport. “Not only are they on hand should you run out of talent on a corner, or come to some other mishap, but if they weren’t out there in their familiar orange suits, we wouldn’t have racing cars lining up on the grid at all! That’s why Avon is happy to be giving something back to motorsport’s backroom boys and girls.”

During every racing season more than 2,200 people from around the UK volunteer to marshal at various motor racing events.

Avon OE on Car that Recreates Racing’s Golden Age

Avon tyres has secured its third OE contract with a British sportscar manufacturer within the space of six months. Avon parent company Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd has announced the signing of an agreement with Peterborough based manufacturer Vanwall – a postwar racing marque given a new lease of life in the 21st century. This latest deal comes on top of recent contracts with Connaught and Morgan.

Avon’s Turbo Steel 70 has been confirmed as the official tyre for Vanwall’s V12-powered Grand Prix Racer. Starting at £50,000 per car, and built to each customer’s individual specification, the Vanwall GPR V12 is a road legal, two-seater racing car styled on the classic 1950s Formula One cars bearing the same name, made famous at the hands of motor racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss.

Year Round Performance from Avon

Taking into account today’s unpredictable weather, the ever-rising performance of bikes and motorcyclists wishing to use their machines in a far more diverse manner than ever, Avon started with a blank canvas for its new sports-touring tyre, the Storm-ST. And by implementing new manufacturing and development processes at their factory in Melksham, Avon built on the qualities cherished by users of their Azaro-ST whilst making improvements in other areas. The result is a tyre that allows a rider to get the most from their machine in all seasons and conditions.

Avon believes that it is not necessary to use two compounds to produce a tyre that is hard in the centre and softer at the edges. Instead the company uses what they call Advanced-Variable Belt Density (A-VBD) construction features – Aramid fibres that are wound round the tyre densely in the centre section and then progressively spaced out as it reaches the edges.

Avon Tyres British GT Series – GT Heaven

Aston Martin DBRS9, Lamborghini Gallardo, Jaguar’s new XKR, Ferrari 430, Porsche GT3RS, Ascari KZ1R and the iconic Dodge Viper are among the mouth-watering line-up of GT machinery that will grace this year’s Avon Tyres British GT Championship. And, of course, these dream machines will be shod with Avon motorsport tyres.

Avon Tyres Motorsport, the racing division of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd, won the contract to supply control tyres to GT Championship series for the 2006 to 2008 race seasons. This year’s season rumbles into action at Oulton Park, Cheshire, on Easter weekend, April 7-9.

Avon Motorcycle Tyres has announced the appointment of a new public relations agency. As of March 8 Performance PR became responsible for handling all media enquiries and for raising the profile of the Cooper Tire owned motorcycle division.

Avon Nominated for Motorsport Award

Avon Tyres is amongst the nominees named for the International Historic Motorsport Show 2007. The Melksham based tyremaker will compete for the Motorsport Company of the Year award, which will be announced at a black tie dinner function held on Saturday March 24.

Avon Tyres Motorsport has produced racing tyres for more than 25 years, and currently supplies tyres to more than 150 championships around the world.

Cooper to Open European Technical Centre in Melksham

Cooper Tires has confirmed that its UK factory in Melksham, Wiltshire, will be the home for a new European Technical Centre (ETC) that will be the hub of the company’s European activities.

The ETC will be responsible for all elements of the design and development of products manufactured at Melksham, primarily high-performance passenger vehicle tyres in both Cooper and Avon brands.

Avon Automotive to Close Manton Plant

Avon Automotive plans to close its manufacturing facility in Manton by the middle of this year. Cost pressures and a downturn in the US auto market have left the plant, which has been in operation since the mid-1970s, unprofitable. About 100 jobs will be moved to Mexico.

Kicking Up A Storm

The inclement mid-January weather was just a coincidence, but Avon clearly wanted to attract attention at last month’s Trade Expo when it exhibited the Storm-ST, the successor to the acclaimed Azaro-ST. In fact it was pretty much the only thing on the spacious stand as the company wanted to focus attention squarely on its new flagship Sport Touring offering. Avon’s decision to promote the Storm-ST at Expo runs in parallel to the launch of the Viper Xtreme trackday tyre and follows a 12 per cent increase in Avon motorcycle tyre sales in 2006.
