The NEC in Birmingham will be brimming with nostalgia and the spell of Le Mans on 13 & 14 January as one of the most significant displays of Le Mans cars ever assembled will be reunited with their legendary drivers, at Autosport International. The Le Mans feature, in association with BEN and Motor Sport magazine, will reunite the famous drivers with their famous cars, tracing the history of this near-mythical race from its very beginnings in 1923.
Avon Tyres have the potential to become part of a new world record as British Autograss champion Phil Cooper prepares to smash his own existing indoor world speed record at the Autosport International show on January 13/14.
In December, Cooper, who holds the distinction of being Overall Series Points Champion in all classes of the 2006 British Autograss Series, set a record of 82.05mph on a 210-metre track at the NEC in Birmingham, the same venue as he will make his current attempt.
The grid for the inaugural 2007 BARC/Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup has been boosted with the announcement that Dunlop is to run a SEAT Leon FR as a VIP/guest car in the series. he 200hp Leon FR will compete in Class C of the Cup, against cars such as the Renault Clio 172, Citroen C4VTS, Mini Cooper S and MG ZS180. The car is being built by multiple Fiat Challenge Champions, AMR Racing, and team owner Adrian Miller is also talking to two other drivers about running sister cars to the Dunlop entry.
Describing itself as the leading supplier of Pirelli Circuit Tyres in the UK, Silverline Motorsport holds extensive stocks of the Pirelli P Zero Corsa and is able to supply from stock all the popular and not so popular sizes. The ever-expanding track day market has prompted Silverline to invest in the equipment to support this market and the Motorsport fitting trucks can be seen at all of the major UK and European circuits throughout the season.
The Aftermarket Show has revamped its web site, signalling the launch of its visitor campaign for the 2007 show. The website www.theaftermarketshow.com holds everything there is to know about the event and also that of sister show Autosport International, enabling visitors to plan their visit around the four day long exhibition.
Pirelli is to step down from being a World Rally Championship tyre supplier at the end of the season, according to motorsport director Paul Hembrey. The decision is based on “marketing reasons” Hembery said in an interview with Autosport magazine.
Autosport International, Europe’s largest motorsport exhibition, which also comprises The Aftermarket Show, has been shortlisted for three categories in the Association of Exhibition Organisers (AEO) Excellence Awards. The awards, which will be announced at the end of June, will see the event contest the Trade Show of the Year, Consumer Show of the Year and Most Original Stand for its F1 Feature.
New figures released by The Aftermarket Show event organisers, Haymarket Exhibitions, show that more than 4500 aftermarket trade visitors attended the event in January of this year. In 2006, The Aftermarket Show was monitored closely and this research has brought about a number of changes to the event in 2007, one of which is the new trade two-day exhibitor package.
With the first round of the British Rally Championship getting underway next week the Hankook SJR team is making its final preparations for its first assault on Britain’s premier rally series. Former British Rally Champion Gwyndaf Evans and new talent Stuart Jones will spearhead the team’s campaign in the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship which beings in Carlisle on Saturday 13 May.
Companies that want to exhibit at the 2007 Aftermarket Show (11 – 14 January) will be allowed to limit their attendance to the two trade days, as part of a newly-tailored package that is being offered by event organisers, Haymarket Exhibitions.
Aftermarket exhibitors have previously been required to attend both trade days and also the two public days that follow when attending the show, which runs alongside the massive Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
Performance exhaust manufacturer Milltek Sport has recently moved into a Logistics and Sales Centre at Pride Park, Derby. This move is the springboard for a new phase of expansion. Chief Executive Phil Millington commented, “This hi-tech Centre is a key factor in our further expansion programme, not only in the UK but also worldwide, since we are now exporting to some 40 countries. Our technical and manufacturing base remains at Ilkeston, where we have a highly skilled and closely-knit team and Pride Park will perfectly complement this.”
Yokohama HPT was instrumental in stunt driver Terry Grant’s success in claiming two new World Records at last month’s Autosport International show. Grant chose Yokohama tyres and TSW alloy wheels for the cars he used to shatter the existing records for performing donuts.
As Grant was the previous record holder, he was aiming to smash own achievement for the number of cars performing donuts simultaneously by a single driver. The technique involved setting one car donutting, locking the throttle and steering, leaving the spinning car, getting into another car and repeating the process. Terry’s previous record was for three cars but he went one better to set the record with four cars concurrently donutting, to rapturous applause from the audience in the show’s Live Action Arena.
The recent Autosport show saw Korean tyre manufacturer, Hankook, unveil a raft of motorsports plans, as it seeks to become a key player in the UK motorsports arena. Building on last year’s successful rallying programme, Hankook Motorsports has confirmed plans to run a two-car team in the British Rally Championship with former British champion Gwyndaf Evans and rising-star Stuart Jones driving Hankook shod Mitsubishi Lancers. On the racetrack Hankook announced that it is joining forces with the VW Racing Cup.
Dunlop Tyres has linked up with the London College of Fashion, challenging students to design a ‘ready to wear’ collection inspired by motorsport. The winning designs were unveiled at Birmingham’s Air nightclub on 11 January during an exclusive Dunlop brand event hosted by Radio 1’s Sara Cox, which also kick-started Dunlop’s presence at the annual Autosport Show.
Diss-based Beru F1 Systems has won an Motor Industry Association (MIA) innovation award for its DigiTyre tyre pressure monitoring system. The achievement was formally recognised at the annual Motorsport Industry Association Awards held during the Autosport International exhibition at the NEC. Beru’s MIA Business Excellence Award for Technology and Innovation was one of only seven awards presented. The company’s latest tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is currently used in the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, the world’s fastest road car.
