Avon Automotive plans to close its manufacturing facility in Manton by the middle of this year. Cost pressures and a downturn in the US auto market have left the plant, which has been in operation since the mid-1970s, unprofitable. About 100 jobs will be moved to Mexico.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has appointed Charles “Chuck” Mick to the newly created position of vice president and general manager, North American holdings and integration. Prior to taking on this position Mick had served since 2003 as vice president and general manager of the company’s Global Off-Highway tyre business.
(Akron/Tire Review) SEMA announced that it’s upcoming Spring Expo and Off-Road Show will be enhanced with the addition of several educational seminars geared to installers and retailers. Set for Mar. 23-24, 2007 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, the Spring Expo and Off-Road Show is open to all automotive retailers.
Continental AG is interested in acquiring the VDO automotive unit of fellow German company Siemens AG, according to a company spokesman. He commented that the Siemens product portfolios ‘harmonise well,’ and added that Continental are available for talks should Siemens decide they wished to enter into such talks.
Automotive component and sealant manufacturer Dupont Performance Elastomers will reportedly retain their Rubbertown factory in Louisville, Kentucky until the end of the year. The company previously announced the facility would close by the end of March.
BEN, the automotive industry charity, is facing a deficit of up to £750,000 in its financial year to 31 March after tough market conditions, a drop off in legacy donations and plant closures like Longbridge and Ryton hit its fundraising income. Germany’s Federal Cartel Office and corporate competitiveness watchdog, the BundesKartellamt, has given the all clear for Continental’s purchase of UK based company Thermopol International Limited. The German automotive supplier intends to integrate Thermopol into the Fluid Technology business unit of its daughter company, ContiTech.
Shock absorber company KYB was named “Supplier of the Year” at the 2006 Automotive Distribution Federation (ADF) awards ceremony, which took place at the Hilton Metropole hotel in Birmingham.

French insurance giant Axa has cut its voting stake in Continental, the German maker of tyres and auto parts, to less than 10 per cent, according to the automotive. As of 4 January, Axa’s voting stake in Continental stood at 9.52 per cent, the auto parts specialist said in a mandatory legal filing published in the German press. Previously, Axa had held a share of 10.05 per cent in Continental’s voting capital.
