German tyre and automotive systems major Continental AG has said they would prefer to deal in cash during the potential takeover of Siemens AG’s VDO unit or Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co’s engineered products division, according to the company’s chief financial officer Allan Hippe.
In the last five years, Continental, claims to have reduced CO2 emissions by more than 30 per cent per product tonne. “The current discussion in the European Union surrounding climate protection and the latest CO2 targets for the automotive industry underline the fact that, especially with our hybrid systems, we are offering forward-looking technology,” stresses Manfred Wennemer, chairman of the Continental Executive Board.
The environmental division of BMH Wood Technology Oy has sold the world’s largest tyre shredder to a company in the UK. In July 2007 BMH will deliver a Tyrannosaurus plant to Credential Automotive Ltd. The plant will be able to process around 70,000 tonnes of used car tyres into shreds of approx. 60 mm in size each year. According to the company, the amount represents approx. 20 per cent of all used car tyres in the U.K.
2006 was the 6th consecutive record year for B-Quik, the Thailand-based tyre and car services retailer. The company serviced 250,000 customers through its total of 45 centres, of which three were new stores opened during 2006.
According to a press release distributed by Brityrex and the NTDA, the retail tyre industry is putting its weight behind an aftermarket campaign to highlight restrictive and anti-competitive practices by vehicle manufacturers, which, according to the NTDA, the tyre industry believes is preventing members from servicing and repairing some newer car models.

Sibur-Russian Tyres has instigated the formation of a subcommittee, subordinate to the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s committee on entrepreneurship in the automotive industry, to focus upon the development of Russia’s tyre and rubber industry. The aim of this subcommittee is to facilitate the consolidation of Russian tyremakers in order to protect their interests at the governmental level.

Atlas Copco has received conditional approval from the anti-trust authorities to acquire the Industrial Division of the ABAC Group. It had a turnover in 2006 of approximately 190 million euros and some 650 employees. The estimated operating profit margin in 2006 was around 10 per cent. The acquisition is scheduled to close on 2 April.
Aftermarket parts supplier Motaquip has appointed Esther Kibble to the position of District Sales Manager for the Midlands and South Wales. She has seven years’ experience in the automotive industry and, prior to her recent appointment, was a senior buyer in Motaquip’s purchasing team.
EnTire Solutions, LLC has entered into an agreement with Siemens VDO Service & Special Solutions, who will market and sell EnTire Solution aftermarket tyre pressure monitoring sensors (TPMS) and service kits to service wholesalers and dealerships as a part of the Siemens VDO offering. Two EnTire Solution aftermarket TPMS and valve service kits will be sold through Siemens VDO to support current original equipment business.

(Akron/Tire Review) The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers Inc. (AIAM) announced its opposition to the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act (H.B. 1584) bill that was recently introduced in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
In a letter sent to Oklahoma state legislators, AIAM said the bill was unnecessary, counterproductive and did not adequately protect the intellectual property of automakers.
Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama has recently been chosen to supply OE fitment tyres on three new models. The latest additions to the Yokohama portfolio include high performance, upgrade and off-road applications.
The new Honda Legend comes wearing Yokohama’s flagship tyre, the ADVAN Sport. The Legend is Honda’s flagship luxury saloon and features permanent four wheel-drive, a 291bhp V6 VTEC engine and a host of safety features, such as emergency braking radar and lane changing assistance. The Legend is fitted with 235/50R17 100W Yokohama ADVAN Sport V103 tyres, providing high levels of grip and response.
Continental Automotive Systems have shown off their smart technologies in an interactive display at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. The display exhibits the company’s efforts to integrate active and passive safety systems, wireless and other “smart” technologies that make driving safer, more comfortable and fun.
