Conti Canada Forms Partnership With Racing Organisation

At the start of August Continental Tire Canada announced its commitment to be an official partner of ICAR, the International Centre of Advanced Racing and owner of a newly constructed racetrack in Mirabel, Quebec. The two companies first worked together on Continental North America’s yearly winter customer event, the Arctic Blast, which took place last February.

ICAR offers Canadian car enthusiasts the unique opportunity to join an exclusive private racing club, participate in a racing school, view professional races or use the location for a corporate event. The actual racetrack is about 3.8 kilometres long. On site there is a separate Kart track, open for members and visitors.

Bridgestone TV Commercials Make Cannes Shortlist

What do “The Pianist,” “Pulp Fiction” and Bridgestone brand commercials featuring a screaming squirrel and a lucky dog have in common? All four works have been finalists at prestigious festivals in Cannes.

Inspired by the Cannes Film Festival, the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival is held each year to recognise creativity in advertising from around the globe. Though they didn’t win the festivals’ top prizes like “The Pianist” and “Pulp Fiction” did, the two US Bridgestone brand commercials were chosen as finalists, placing them among the top 10 per cent of the more than 4,600 entries from 85 countries in this year’s advertising festival.

Sport Maxx Tyres Help Hollamby in Time Attack

Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup driver Shaun Hollamby, took on one of the most breathtaking circuit phenomenons of the year performing in the Time Attack at Circuit Park Zandvoort, Holland. Time Attack is said to be the next ‘big thing’ in automotive lifestyle and brings full throttle excitement to the track. It puts drivers under pressure with one lap against the clock.

Street legal cars are let loose on tracks across Europe to achieve the fastest lap possible and the best from each track meet in the final later in the year. Shaun Hollamby, a race winner, in the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup was invited to race Milltek’s Audi R8 at the legendary race circuit in Holland. The R8 proved to be quite a different experience from Shaun’s usual winning car the Sport SEAT Leon Cupra 2.0T. Only the Sport Maxx tyres were the common element to the two cars.

Car Scrappage Scheme ‘Simplistic’

Recommendations from the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee for a government–funded car scrappage scheme have been criticised by the Automotive Distribution Federation (ADF). “There is a blinkered attitude towards environmental issues which propels people towards simplistic ‘headline’ solutions, rather than small simple steps which, in combination, can have a significant impact,” says ADF chief executive Brian Spratt.

Spratt contends that tighter environmental inspections in MoT tests, which in turn would lead to better servicing of vehicles, along with programmes of driver behaviour training aimed at reducing pollution and improving fuel economy would be preferable. “Even a simple thing such as the correct tyre pressures,” he says, “will add to the positive impact and, cumulatively, outweigh the environmental costs of producing new vehicles. These straightforward measures will be a greater benefit to motorists who, despite any scrappage incentive, will still find it impossible to fund the purchase of a newer car.”

Conti OE for Dacia Sandero

Continental reports that every second new Dacia Sandero, the latest model released by the Romanian manufacturer, rolls off the production line equipped with its tyres. The majority of these are ContiEcoContact 3 in size 185/65 R15 88T, produced at Conti’s Timisoara facility in Romania. This latest OE homologation continues a supply partnership between Dacia and the Timisoara factory that began in 2005.

“Tyres of the last technological generation have an important contribution to traffic safety,” commented Thierry Wipff, general manager of Continental’s Timisoara plant. “For us, the safety of our customers is of highest priority, a core criterion in conducting our activity and an important part of Continental’s vision.”

Automotive Employers Urged to Consider Diploma in Product Design

Employers are being encouraged to consider a new Diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design as a way of investing in the future of their business. The course has been developed to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in industry, and will be taught from a curriculum designed in partnership with manufacturers. Available to young people aged between 14 and 19, it will be launched in September 2009 in 27 areas across England, delivered by approved consortia of schools, colleges and employers. In September this year, new consortia will be invited to apply to deliver the qualification from 2010, extending its reach to more young people. By 2013, the diploma will be available to all young people in England.

Parts Suppliers Comment on NHTSA Proposal

Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) has weighed in on NHTSA product marking recommendations for imported vehicles and vehicle part. The group’s input came in response to NHTSA’s request for comments its proposed regulations. Various MEMA sub-groups – including the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association – participated.

MEMA said that NHTSA’s product marking recommendations “go beyond just the ‘country of origin’ mark by adding the following: manufacturer name or trademark; date or date range of manufacture; and, any marking requirements from an industry standard or recommended practice.

India’s ATMA Repeats Demand for Duty Free NR Imports

With India’s tyre industry potentially facing a severe shortage of natural rubber, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA) has repeated its demand for the immediate duty-free importation of 100,000 tonnes of natural rubber.

The industry, which consumes 57 per cent of India’s domestically produced natural rubber, is said to be in the midst of its worst ever raw material availability crisis. The Hindu Business Line quotes ATMA director general Rajiv Budhraja as saying during the final days of July 2008 the availability of sheet rubber to the tyre industry has been ‘woefully inadequate’. Mr. Budhraja added that, as domestic natural rubber prices are even higher than those on the international market, the commodity now accounts for 41 per cent of the tyre industry’s raw material costs.

IndianOil to Establish £90m Synthetic Rubber Facility

IndianOil, the largest company in India in terms of sales and profit, intends to establish its first styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) facility. This plant, located at Panipat in the north of India and to be built at an investment price of Rs 7.61 billion (£90.55 million), will be 48 per cent owned by IndianOil. The company plans to offer two further investors respective shares of 32 per cent and 20 per cent in the 120,000 tonne per annum emulsion SBR project.

Bafin Approves Schaeffler’s Bid for Continental

The German federal financial supervisory authority (BaFin) has given the go-ahead for Schaeffler Group’s 70.12 euro per share cash bid to take over Continental AG. According to an official statement on the subject, the acceptance period for the offer begins today and ends at midnight on 27 August 2008.

Dr Juergen Geissinger, Schaeffler Group president and CEO, made it clear that Schaeffler wants to wrap up proceedings as soon as possible, pointing to recent comments made by vehicle manufacturers including Volkswagen, GM and Porsche: “Public statements of customers of both companies from the automotive industry show that they view a possible alliance between Schaeffler and Continental as positive…We remain determined to come to a rapid agreement with Continental AG’s management that is in the interests of all parties involved. Regardless of the previous rejection of our offer, we can see a great opportunity for this, because we remain prepared to continue Continental AG’s existing strategy, which we explicitly support, together with the management.”

Tenneco to Transfer Rubber Moulding Operations to Mexico

Automotive parts manufacturer Tenneco has reportedly announced it will relocate its rubber moulding division from its Milan, Ohio facility to Reynosa in Mexico. This transfer of operations will lead to approximately 65 job redundancies at the Milan plant. According to the company, the decision to move operations to Mexico is necessary to remain competitive in the domestic and global markets, due to ever increasing fuel, rubber and steel prices.

BBS Announces Closure of Former Hayes Lemmerz Plant

The management of BBS International GmbH (‘BBS’) has announced it intends to close its aluminium wheel manufacturing facility in Hoboken, Belgium. BBS management adds the company will follow the relevant legal procedures in doing so, and will attempt to bring about “an acceptable solution for all the parties involved.”

The Hoboken plant, formerly the Belgian subsidiary of Hayes Lemmerz International, was acquired by BBS on 16 June. The factory produces wheels for passenger cars and currently employs 258 people. According to BBS, the operation had been running at a loss for a “considerable time”, and the closure decision has now been taken as “management no longer wanted to keep its staff in a state of uncertainty.”
