SPX Service Solutions and Bartec USA Sign TPMS Deal

SPX Service Solutions (SPX) and Bartec USA, LLC, have embarked on a joint product development and distribution partnership to develop and distribute SPX patented TPMS tool technology. “Under this new partnership, both firms will focus on providing new high-performance TPMS diagnostic tools to the tyre and wheel service technician, as well as, to the broader automotive service market," according to Pat Pierce, director of Product Development for SPX. "As the prevalence of TPMS-equipped vehicles continues to grow, the need for effective service tools will also grow, driving the need for a wider range of tools to meet the demands of the more diverse technician base that will encounter TPMS in the course of vehicle service." The first new product as result of this partnership will be unveiled at the SEMA show in November.

YH America Expands Power Steering Hose Business

Yokohama Rubber has announced the expansion of the power steering business operated by it US affiliate YH America, Inc. In making the announcement, Yokohama states “in the changing US automotive market environment, no company can survive the power steering hose market without high product quality and cost competitiveness.” The company notes that, recognising this situation as an opportunity for improving its position in the market, YH America increased its production capacity in May by leasing a plant in South Carolina. This move should propel YH America into the top position on the US power steering hose market.

Tenneco to Close Nebraska Facility

US based automotive component supplier Tenneco Inc. reports it will close its original equipment ride control plant in Cozad, Nebraska as the company continues to restructure its operations globally. The company expects to begin transferring current customer business to other ride control operations later this year, including Hartwell, Georgia, Paragould, Arkansas, and Celaya, Mexico. Tenneco expects to complete the closure in the fourth quarter 2010. Currently 460 hourly and 40 salaried workers are employed at the Cozad plant; Tenneco states that Impacted employees will receive transitional assistance.

Magnum SRI Recycled Compound Tyre Test Yield Successful Results

According to rubber recycler Magnum D’Or Resources and Sekhar Research Innovations, September has been a truly historic month. Magnum SRI has for some time performed laboratory trials to convert its activated compound into a high recycled content “custom compound” that is tailored for blending with various high end applications, and on September 19 Magnum SRI announced it has now successfully produced the custom compound on a commercial production scale using a Banbury mixer at the Malaysian Rubber Research Institute facility in Sungai Buloh. This effectively replicates, explained Magnum, the production parameters and process flow it indents to implement in its Magog, Canada facility and subsequently its plant in Colorado.

Conti CEO: Company Planning to Keep Tyre Unit

Continental’s new chief executive Elmar Degenhart recently told reporters that management board's preference is to “keep our portfolio the way it is today.” Newspapers and wire services have been quick re-report Degenhart’s remarks owing to the company’s previous position that it would consider the sales of the company’s Rubber Group, which includes the tyre business.

Degenhart’s words (spoken in an interview with German automotive industry publication Automobilwoche) follow a string of non-verbal cues that suggest differences of opinions with the company and at major shareholder Schaeffler group. The latest, following Schaeffler repeated failure to include tyres and rubber its plans for a combined Conti/Schaeffler, was the fact that Continental AG apparently had nothing to say about tyres at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Ascot Strikes Deal With Allpart Supply, Offers New Equipment

Reitzle to Lead Conti Amidst Board Appointments

Wolfgang Reitzle, CEO of industrial gas company Linde, was confirmed as the new chairman of Continental AG's supervisory board. "We are very pleased that we have been able to persuade Professor Reitzle to take on this challenging mandate," said Schaeffler owner Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler in a statement. Reitzle has been highly sought after by a number of major firms, including BMW, and served as an executive with Ford Motor Co. The move came after owner Schaeffler Group forced out the previous board chairman Rolf Koerfer, who will nonetheless remain on the board. Also stepping down is board member Michael Frenzel, CEO of travel company TUI.

Meanwhile, the Schaeffler Group recently appointed Dr. Peter Pleus (55) and Norbert Indlekofer (51) to the position of President of Schaeffler Group Automotive. They have been appointed successors to Dr. Elmar Degenhart (50), who was appointed Chairman of the Executive Board of Continental AG on 12 August 2009.

Snap-on Tools Celebrates 5,000 Sales

In order to celebrate the 5,000th sale of its Solus Pro hand-held diagnostic tool, Snap-on Tools, the supplier of tools, tool storage and workshop equipment for the UK automotive aftermarket, has announced the introduction of celebratory carbon fibre-look edition. The Hindu: Indian Tyre Exports Down 22% in July

A report published by Indian newspaper, The Hindu states that while the country remains an important hub for passenger car exports, its tyre makers appear not to be keeping up. Citing a report by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association, the paper reports in its Business Line section that “automotive tyre exports fell 22 per cent in July to 446,418 units against 571,479” in 2008, while quarterly exports fell “22 per cent to 1,558,393 units (2,042,428 units).”
