Notts logistics firm signs ATS-E supply and service agreement

Automotive logistics firm Blue Dragon Transport has appointed ATS Euromaster to supply and service tyres across its fleet of 20 trucks and 28 trailers. The Nottinghamshire company ended its previous agreement with a local supplier after ATS Euromaster offered to carry out a free fleet inspection and highlight issues it thought might be affecting its tyre budget. ATS-E considered the company’s “lack of brand consistency was contributing to unpredictable fluctuations in tyre expenditure”.

Kuehne + Nagel takes over Conti South Africa plant logistics

Logistics firm Kuehne + Nagel has assumed management of warehouse operations at Continental’s Port Elizabeth tyre making facility in South Africa. Within the scope of the new contract, Kuehne + Nagel will support Continental Tyre S.A. (Pty) Ltd’s original equipment and aftermarket dealer business in the South African market through receiving tyres from production, carrying out quality control checks, storage, inbound and outbound handling, picking and packing, inventory management as well as management of empty containers. In addition, Kuehne + Nagel will provide an external warehousing solution for overflow volumes in Port Elizabeth.

HiQ manager frustrated by auto acronyms

A HiQ fast fit manager has revealed his frustration at the preponderance of acronyms in the automotive industry – a state of affairs he describes as “infuriating”. Stuart Carr says he has been driven to distraction by the creeping usage of perplexing acronyms in manufacturers’ manuals. Carr said: “I actually enjoy picking out a manual from the glove box and having a read through, but upon recent inspection I stumbled across reams of unnecessary jargon.

Italian authorities seize 50,000 counterfeit wheels

Authorities in the Northern Italian province of La Spezia have seized 50,000 counterfeit wheels, reportedly worth over 20 million euros. The local Guardia di Finanza seized the products deemed to be hazardous to the safety of motorists, having intercepted them on the way into the market from China. In addition to the wheels, police also seized 100,000 accessories featuring logos of car manufacturers and 400 moulds allegedly intended for the production of knock-off wheels in Italy. A number of firms based in north-central Italy implicated in importing the products from China have been reported.

Expanded US Conti test site provides increased tyre testing options

Continental Tire The Americas has inaugurated a new wet and dry test surface at its providing ground in Uvalde, Texas. Work on the US$3.5 million Vehicle Dynamics Area began last September and construction work involved transporting more than 88,000 tonnes of material and over 700 truckloads of rock to the site; the end result is a 640,000 square foot (60,000 square metre) area that provides several test options to simulate real-world driving sceneries, safely allowing for tyre and vehicle stability tests at the “limit.” The track surface is intended to reflect the average asphalt surfaces motorists encounter while simultaneously allowing a high degree of differentiation between different tyres. The irrigation system installed for wet testing uniformly distributes water across the surface’s entire width and is adjustable from 1.3 to 2.8mm.

Klarius appoints new UK sales director

The UK features strongly in the Klarius Group’s plans for growing its European business, and the Leicester based manufacturer of exhaust systems, catalytic converters and other automotive components says this commitment to UK growth can be seen in the appointment of Richard Morley as UK sales director. Morley, who was previously with German owned automotive electrics company Hella, brings more than 21 years of automotive aftermarket experience with him into his new role, in which he assumes day-to-day responsibility for Klarius’ UK sales team. Key tasks that Morley will undertake include developing and implementing the company’s commercial strategy, identifying and prioritising new business opportunities, developing existing customers whilst bringing innovative new products to market in the UK.

Fritz appointed Goodyear investor relations VP

Goodyear Tire & Rubber has announced the appointment of Gregory A. Fritz to the position of vice president, investor relations. In his new role, Fritz, who prior to joining the tyre maker was assistant treasurer and senior director, investor relations for Whirlpool Corporation, will report to Darren R. Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Sumitomo to manufacture in Brazil through 100% owned subsidiary

Official confirmation has been given of Sumitomo Rubber’s plans for Brazil; in July the Japanese firm will establish Sumitomo Rubber do Brasil Ltda, a Panara state-based subsidiary responsible for manufacturing and selling tyres in Brazil. With an investment of some 560 million real (£211 million), Sumitomo Rubber do Brasil will erect a factory to produce passenger car radials. The 500,000 square metre plant is scheduled to start production in October 2013 and have a 15,000 tyre per day capacity. Sumitomo Rubber will be sole shareholder in the new subsidiary.

Snap-on, brand leader in diagnostic tools, software and information for the automotive market, has announced the release of the new 11.2 software download for its hand-held diagnostic tools. The latest version now includes full coverage of the manufacturer Volvo and component test meter coverage of Mercedes.

Cost-effective Zircotec coating provides Euro VI options

A new low-cost ‘fit and forget’ ceramic coating offering surface temperature reductions of 125°C has been developed by coatings specialist Zircotec for diesel engine applications. The coating features a new ceramic formulation and this, together with changes to the manufacturing process, has enabled the company to reduce costs for the new Performance Diesel product – the first Zircotec application specifically developed for commercial vehicle manufacturers – by fifty per cent. Zircotec believes the coating will prove an attractive option for truck and bus manufacturers challenged by the higher temperatures experienced with new Euro VI emissions regulations and testing methods set to be introduced in late 2013.

Conti Tire Americas chief to take on non-tyre role

Matthias Schönberg, who has served as chief executive officer of Continental Tire the Americas since October 2006, is soon to leave the company’s American operation to assume management of the ContiTech Fluid Technology business unit on July 1. Schönberg will take over this Germany-based position from incumbent Hannes Friederichsen, who as of October 1 will take on management of the Air Spring Systems business unit; current manager Dr. Thomas Johannsen, who is credited for transforming the Air Spring Systems business unit from an air spring manufacturer located in Hanover, Germany into an international supplier of air spring systems with plants in six countries, has announced his impeding retirement. Mr. Schönberg's replacement has yet to be named.

RL Automotive markets TAC-Scan at CV Show

With the cost of fuel only going one way, how tyres are managed is becoming increasingly more important. That’s why RL Automotive was showing its TAC-Scan laser-based tyre wear diagnostic equipment at April’s CV Show. According to the company, tyre wear diagnostic equipment has been left behind in the tide of new technology as it is largely still done manually, which not only effects accuracy but also makes readings subjective.

Nexen exhibits at Shanghai Motors Show

Korean tyre manufacturer Nexen Tyre recently showed its range at the Shanghai Motor Show. According to the company, the aim was to increase awareness of the brand, establish the company’s standing as an international tyre manufacturer and broaden the basis for the Chinese OEM market.

CITExpo exhibitor bookings approach the 200 mark

Although this year’s CITExpo is still several months’ away, the organiser of the Shanghai-based show reports that nearly 200 exhibitors have already booked space. As a result, halls one and two of the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center are already fully occupied and the organiser says the planned exhibition space in hall three is currently being “booked aggressively.” Reliable International Exhibition Services, the shows organiser, claims it is ready for this, the ninth CITExpo held, to be the largest ever – the 2011 show is expected to have a floor space of over 22,000 square metres and host major Chinese manufacturers plus international brands such as Cooper ChengShan Tire. The 6th Automotive Testing Expo will be held in the week following CITExpo.
