In January, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed 16-month high figures in car manufacturing, and its February numbers support the view of KPMG automotive partner, John Leech that production will “strengthen in 2012”. Year on year figures show that manufacturing rose 23.5 per cent in February, making the year to date 19.6 per cent above the same two months in 2011. Commercial vehicle output meanwhile fell slightly by 2.7 per cent, down 2.0 per cent over the first two months of the year.
Following news that Midas will be acquired for an estimated US$310 million, company CEO Alan Feldman described the deal with TBC Corporation as being “the best opportunity for Midas to go forward.” Speaking to the Chicago Tribune newspaper, Feldman described the acquisition as a “strategic, compelling marriage of two leading brands in the automotive repair aftermarket.
Automotive Charity BEN has been awarded a 2-star rating in the Sunday Times 'Best Companies to Work For 2012'. The award which placed BEN as one of the country's best not-for-profit organisations was presented to HR Director, Sara Howard at a special ceremony by Best Companies Director, Glenn Dimelow.

Tire Group International has announced another new addition to its international sales team. The Florida, US-based wholesaler has appointed John Abreu its new territory manager for Puerto Rico & Colombia. Abreu has been in the automotive industry for more than ten years and TGI comments that he brings a vast amount of experience and knowledge in the passenger, light truck, truck, industrial, agricultural and OTR tyre segments with him into this new role. Previously, Abreu worked for more than five years at General Motors as its fixed operations director.

The Royal Automobile Club will host its first Charity Cup Golf Competition to raise money for BEN at Woodcote Park on Tuesday 24 April. On 1 March eleven graduates commenced Continental’s Explore Tires Research & Development trainee programme, and the German tyre maker has noted that – for the first time ever – female inductees outnumber their male counterparts; for 2012, the new intake of tyre research and development trainees includes six women and five men. Conti says that the proportion of women accepted for training in the research, development, production and marketing of tyres has been increasing over a number of years.

HiQ is aiming to “reassure customers that they are receiving the best technical and professional service,” according to fast fit manager, Stuart Carr, and to that end it is encouraging its technicians to complete Automotive Technician Accreditation training. Now two of its technicians at the Berwick upon Tweed and Blyth franchises have completed the Level 3 ATA Diagnostic assessment – the first in the network to achieve this level, regulated by the Institute of Motor Industry. Paul Dugid of HiQ Berwick upon Tweed and John Parker of HiQ Blyth are now registered as diagnostic technicians through the programme.
Throughout November 2011 automotive industry charity, BEN ran a text competition with a special edition, top of the range Snap-on McLaren Sport tool box which had been signed by Formula One's Jenson Button the star prize. 4,300 people entered, raising £4,000 for BEN. Entrants were required to text the answer to the question: ‘BEN is the official charity of which industry?' Thousands of people responded with the correct answer – automotive – and picked at random was the winner from Devon.
Fast fit retailer, HiQ has announced that it will invest £500,000 into a national advertising campaign, re-entering mainstream advertising as a network after an eight-year absence. The network made “a conscious and strategic decision” to delay this scale of mainstream advertising in order to develop the full HiQ Franchise programme say company sources, with investment funnelled into customer service initiatives and training. The newly announced spending will be part of a seven figure investment in HiQ Programmes in 2012.
Scotland’s leading auto parts distributor, Dingbro has opened two new branches in Dumfries and Stranraer, increasing its network to 23 sites. The new branches have been placed to support garages and workshops in the south west of Scotland. "I’m delighted at the recent additions to the network. Expansion is always exciting for us, but even more so in a challenging economic climate,” said Gary Dingwall, managing director, Dingbro.
The biggest petrochemical company in Russia and Eastern Europe has entered into a joint venture with India’s largest private company to produce butyl rubber. On 21 February Sibur and Reliance Industries Limited jointly announced their intention to establish a facility in Jamnagar, India capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of the substance per annum. The plant will be operated by the joint venture company Reliance Sibur Eleastomers Private Limited, which will be India’s first butyl rubber manufacturer and the world’s forth largest supplier.
