German cars are among the least reliable and some luxury vehicles are particularly bad, says a survey conducted by The Consumers’ Association.

VW, which has warned that its 1Q results would be bad, was hit further yesterday when it recalled 870,000 Passats, Audi A6 and A8 models. The worldwide recall is because of a possible fault to the cars’ front axles. The news affected the company’s share price, which at one stage fell by two per cent.
Bridgestone tyres have headed the rankings in comparative tests conducted by German ADAC motorwelt. Reports published in the March issue place the B330 Evo 165/70 R 14 T and RE720 205/55 R 16 W at the top of their respective categories in side-by-side evaluations of summer tyres from competitive suppliers to the European marketplace. Both brands, Bridgestone and Firestone, were highly placed. With a VW Polo as the test vehicle, the Bridgestone B330 Evo emerged ahead of 15 rivals. The Firestone F590 FS also occupied a high position on this list. In the 205/55 R 16 W class, the Bridgestone RE720 ranked first among a line-up of 15 tyres put through their paces on an Audi A4. Here too, the Firestone brand fared well, with the Firehawk TZ 200 filling third place in the points total.
Audi comes closer to integrating PAX System into its large sedans. The new Audi A6 becomes the third model to adopt Michelin PAX System. The Audi and Michelin team also jointly developed a new wheel design, specially designed for PAX System to match the car’s sporty style. The PAX System option will be available from September 2004 throughout Europe, in summer and winter versions.
Tenneco Automotive announced that the company has signed a jointventure agreement with China-based Chengdu Lingchuan Mechanical Plant to establish Chongqing Walker Exhaust System Co., Ltd. The new jointventure will supply emission control products and systems to Changan Ford Co. Ltd., the joint venture between Changan Automobile Group Company and Ford Motor Company. Tenneco Automotive will have 60 per cent ownership of the joint venture expected to be formally established by the end of this year and to begin production in 2004. Tenneco also announced an agreement with Eberspacher International GmbH to establish Walker-Eberspacher Automotive Exhaust System Co., Ltd, a jointventure in China. The jointventure will manufacture and distribute emission control products and systems for BMW and Audi vehicles produced in China. The joint venture will operate just-in-time (JIT) final assembly manufacturing operations in Dalian and Changchun, China at Tenneco Automotive’s existing joint venture facilities in those cities. The jointventure will be owned 30 per cent by Tenneco Automotive directly, 25 per cent by one of Tenneco Automotive’s existing majority-owned joint ventures in China and 45 percent by Eberspacher.
Dunlop North America announced the SP Super Sport Race; a Z-rated radial designed for super car owners and autocross enthusiasts who want a non-competition, street-legal tyre that nevertheless has race-like levels of grip. The Super Sport Race is available in eight Z-rated sizes, with aspect ratios from 40 series down to 30 series and for 17″ and 18″ wheels. Target cars include Audi TT, A4 and A6, Porsche 996 and 986, BMW 3 series, 5-series, M3 and Z3, Honda S2000, VW Golf GTi and the Mercedes SLK, CLK, C-class and E-class.
In the US, the Pirelli Driver Experience, in conjunction with the Panoz Racing School and Audi Driving Experience is being used to entertain and educate dealers. Up to 80 dealers a day undergo expert instruction from professional drivers on vehicles fitted with Pirelli high performance tyres, thus increasing their product knowledge and appreciation.
Beru, which already supplies Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) for the Audi A8 and allroad quattro, has been awarded a contract to fit TPMS on additional Audi models. Delivery will start at the end of the year and Beru expects to supply 50,000 systems in 2004 and possibly double that number in 2005.
The Audi A6 Quattro will be equipped with Michelin’s PAX System, size 215-650 R 440 96 Y Primacy Pilot (Summer version) and 205-640 R 440 97 H Alpine Pilot (Winter version). Audi already fits the PAX System to its A8 model.
From the beginning of May, Superior Industries has been supplying Mitsubishi Motors North America with three types of cast aluminium wheels for the 2004 model Endeavour SUV. This expands Superior’s OE business even further, with the company supplying a number of auto manufacturers, from Audi through to VW.
At the beginning of November 2002 the Michelin Pax System will be offered as an option on the new Audi A8. This underlines the great potential of Pax technology in the areas of security and mobility. Two concept-cars at the Paris Motor Show also featured the Pax System: the Renault Ellipse and the Citroen C Airdream.
