Vredestein Fits One Millionth Space Master

Vredestein Banden recently achieved a major milestone by fitting its 1,000,000th Vredestein Space Master spare tyre, supplying the tyre to Audi for use in the Audi A6 All Road. Vredestein has been using the existing fitting machine for Space Master spare tyres since 2002. The company expects that the next milestone, namely 2,000,000 Space Master spare tyres, will be reached considerably more quickly, given the huge demand from the auto industry.

Thanks to the rise in the large number of SUV and 4×4 models in particular, the popularity of Vredestein’s Space Master spare tyres has grown enormously over the past few years, with many manufacturers opting for the Space Master and the high quality and level of service offered by Vredestein.

The Audi Q7 is the most recent model to be delivered with Vredestein’s Space Master. The Q7 has proven to be an exceptional success and the percentage of Space Master spare tyres fitted in Audi’s SUV is so high that Vredestein has to pull out all the stops in its production and installation processes in order to meet the huge demand.

Continental Commended in Product Honours

Continental’s PremiumContact 2 tyre has been awarded a commendation by Auto Express, describing it as: “Among the best in the wet, particularly curved aquaplaning, and managed unlike most rain masters, to match that in the dry and in rolling resistance tests.”

Peter Robb, product manager at Continental said; “We are delighted to have been commended by Auto Express. The ContiPremiumContact 2 is a popular choice with car manufacturers as an original equipment fitting to their latest generation cars. This test result is proof of its outstanding performance. ”

The tyre is approved for the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Audi A5, the Fiat Bravo, and Toyota Auris among many others. There is also a self supporting runflat version that has just been approved for the BMW 1 and 3 series.

The ContiPremiumContact 2 was a “best buy” recommendation for Which?’s 205/55 R16 V test in the leading magazines February issue. And this is not the first time that Continental has been commended in the Auto Express product honours after 2006 success with the ContiEcoContact 3 for supermini and city cars.

BERU Opens Extended R&D Centre

Beru, manufacturers of the Tire Safety System (TSS) tyre pressure monitoring equipment, have officially opened their extended research and development centre in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The extension, made necessary by the growing demand for the company’s sensor and ignition technology, sees the centre increase in floorspace by approximately 1,000 square metres.

The May 9 opening was presided over by Beru managing director for research & development and sales of original equipment, Dr. Rainer Podeswa. Speaking to industry, political and business representatives attending the ceremony, Dr. Podeswa said: “The extension is a visible sign of a long-term corporate policy and permanent investment in the future.”

Audi R8 to Wear New P Zero

Pirelli’s new P Zero has been selected as the OE tyre for the soon to be released Audi R8. The new mid-engine Audi flagship is the company’s first serious competitor for the likes for the Porsche 911, and therefore Pirelli are understandably pleased to be chosen as the company that, so to speak, will make the rubber hit the road.

Hankook Posts 22% Full-Year Fall

Hankook Tire Co., South Korea’s largest tyremaker, posted a 22 per cent drop in full-year profit, citing higher materials costs and a stronger South Korean won as the primary reasons.

Hankook Signs Audi China Deal

South Korean tyremaking giant Hankook have announced details of an agreement to supply its tyres to Audi as of mid 2007. The agreement signed with the German manufacturer will see Hankook’s high performance Ventus S1 Evo tyres fitted to the Chinese market Audi A4 and A6L, the long wheelbase version of the A6 starting in June.

Hungary Attracts International Tyre Companies

Hungary is one of the few Eastern European countries in which there is no traditional automobile industry. Among the few well-known companies the bus manufacturer Ikarus (one of Eastern European market leaders) is the most commonly known. Nevertheless since the early 1990s some Western manufacturers have installed production or assembly plants there, namely General Motors, Suzuki and Audi. (Audi Hungary Kft is actually the second biggest company in the Hugarian economy). These foreign investments were partly induced by tax exemptions and other incentives like tax-free import of parts, etc. Last year 136,130 cars were produced in Hungary and new car registrations almost reached 200,000 units. This is when Hungary becomes of interest to Western tyre manufacturers.

SEMA Show 2006: Conti Launches New ContiSportContact 3

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) Continental Tire North America is using the SEMA Show to launch the ContiSportContact 3 performance tyre line. Released in Europe earlier this year, the tyre makes its North American debut this week in Las Vegas. Already OE on the Audi TT and A6, the ContiSportContact 3 was developed for high performance vehicles and provides shorter braking distances, enhanced handling characteristics and superior grip on wet roads, according to CTNA.

Bridgestone OE On New Audi TT Coupé

The all-new, second generation Audi TT Coupé harnesses Formula One-derived tyre technology from Bridgestone as original equipment. The new Coupé boasts a hybrid steel-aluminium ‘Audi Space Frame’ shell that reduces weight and improves dynamics, and an electronically retractable rear spoiler that maximises downforce at higher speeds. It is initially available with two engine sizes, a front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre Turbo FSI delivering 197BHP and a quattro four-wheel-drive 3.2-litre V6 delivering 247BHP. Continental to Give Audi Q7 Some Grip
