James Nuttall Regrooves 77 per cent of Tyres

Rochdale-based James Nuttall (Transport) Ltd has recorded one of the highest regrooving rates of any haulier in the UK over the past 18 months, by regrooving 77 per cent of all worn tyres prior to sending them to the Michelin to be remoulded using the Remix process. This figure – nearly double the national average for customers which regroove Michelin tyres – has enabled the company to prolong the life of each new tyre by approximately 25 per cent.

Regrooves are carried out in-house by the company’s own team of fitters, who regroove the tyres in accordance with Michelin’s official regroove guide – a 48 page booklet which illustrates the regroove pattern for all Michelin truck tyres available in the UK. Each steer axle tyre takes approximately 10 minutes to regroove, or 15-20 minutes for an average drive axle tyre.

Energas Ltd Choose Michelin Tyres

Hull-based Energas Ltd, together with its sister-company Engineering & Welding Supplies Ltd, has adopted a 100 per cent Michelin tyre policy managed by ATS Euromaster, following a brief from the Managing Director to reduce the cost of transport.

The agreement covers all vehicles operated by the two companies, including nearly 50 trucks, 16 trailers, 16 vans and 55 cars, together with 15 forklift trucks – using ATS Euromaster’s skills as the only nationwide fast-fit network to be able to support such a wide-ranging fleet of vehicles.

The fleet is spread across 11 depots throughout the Midlands and North East of England, supported by a further four satellites, with the commercial vehicles used primarily for delivering compressed, bulk and liquefied industrial gases, together with a range of welding products.

Bickford Truck Services Relies on ATS Euromaster

Wolverhampton-based Bickford Truck Services, which specialises in hiring commercial vehicles for the construction industry, has appointed ATS Euromaster as principal tyre supplier for its fleet of over 300 trucks. The customer’s fitment policy also specifies a range of budget tyres including Taurus, Kumho and Matador. The fleet ranges from 7.5 to 44 tonnes and includes tippers, grab loaders, flatbeds, skip loaders, cranes, hook lifts, beavertails and tractor units, which are supplied on a mixture of contract hire and rental agreements to civil engineering companies nationwide.

Roger Bickford, joint Managing Director, explains: “Our fleet spends a lot of time operating off-road on construction sites, where the rugged terrain increases the chances of picking up tyre damage. This problem is escalated by the nature of some contracts, which can include penalty charges for unexpected downtime where vehicles are not back on the road within a designated time window.

Selling Even More Tyres Now

With more than three decades of experience in the UK, We Sell Tyres managing director, Alan Jackson, has great experience of the inner workings of the tyre business. He started his career with ATS in the early 70’S at a time when the chain was a collection of regional companies. This provided him with an excellent opportunity to cut his teeth by selling to garages and haulage companies. This experience and the subsequent transformation of ATS into ATS Euromaster was to be a turning point for Alan Jackson who, via WS Tyremasters and a stint at Stapleton’s, recently opened a new We Sell Tyres warehouse in Nottingham – the latest part in what is arguable his most challenging business venture to date.

We Sell Tyres (Wholesale)’s new Nottingham operation will be the company’s flagship site along with its Norwich branch, which relocated to larger premises in April 2006. The company continues to run additional operations in Corby and Worksop. As an important member of Group Tyre, We Sell Tyre continues to develop sales of all premium and mid-sector brands, not to mention exclusive brands Marangoni, Federal and Maxxis.

Drivers Under Pressure to Pump Up

Company car and van drivers are being urged by ATS Euromaster to take advantage of a free tyre pressure check at any of its centres nationwide, in support of the Department for Transport’s new ‘Act on CO²’ initiative. The campaign, launched in March, highlights the amount of CO² emitted by cars and vans in the UK, and targets an eight per cent reduction over 5.5 million tonnes of CO² a year.

The free tyre inspection includes checking the pressure, tread depth and general condition of each tyre and is available at any of ATS Euromaster’s 500 service centres nationwide. It takes approximately five to ten minutes per vehicle and motorists receive a written report showing the exact status of each tyre.

ATS Euromaster Renews Driving School Contract

The nationwide driving school BSM, part of the RAC, has signed a new one-year contract with ATS Euromaster for the provision of new tyres and tyre services. The contract covers BSM’s fleet of over 3,500 dual control vehicles – the largest of its type in the UK.

Quayside Frozen Foods Ltd Choose Michelin High Grip Fitment

Newcastle-based Quayside Frozen Foods Ltd has started fitting Michelin XFN2 Anti-Splash tyres onto the steer axles of its 26 tonne Volvo FM9s and reports that the company has noticed a significant increase in grip whilst driving in wet and slushy conditions.

Incorporating elements of Michelin’s Durable Technologies, the XFN2 Anti-Splash features patented three-dimensional double wave sipes which makes the tread block more rigid, thereby helping combine enhanced tread wear with excellent on-road grip. This tyre also features an anti-splash deflector which dramatically reduces the projection of water when the truck is driven on wet roads.

Harpers Choose ATS Euromaster for Tyre Management

Harpers Waste Management Solutions has adopted a managed tyre policy with ATS Euromaster at its two largest depots in York and Billingham. The agreement will see Michelin tyres fitted across 45 commercial vehicles in its fleet, marking a distinct change from the company’s previous tyre procurement policy which saw a number of different brands fitted by a range of suppliers.

Christian Lafont has been appointed European Key Account Manager for ATS Euromaster’s parent company, Euromaster Group, and will be responsible for developing a portfolio of major fleet customers across Europe.

Repairing Run-Flats

ATS Euromaster (ATSE) has published further details of its plans to launch a nationwide run-flat fitting and puncture repair service. The main point that ATSE clarified is the fact that it is referring to the latest generation of self-supporting run-flat technology tyres manufactured by Bridgestone, Dunlop, Goodyear and Michelin. These, says the company, are “approved for minor repairs, subject to strict criteria.”

Bridgestone Recruiting for Hungarian Factory

Bridgestone Europe has begun recruiting employees for its new factory in Tatabánya, 35 miles west of Budapest. The facility is scheduled to commence trial runs and then volume production in the second half of 2007, following assembly of plant machinery in the spring.
The factory was built with the proceeds of a £125 million investment, and will supply Bridgestone’s European markets. An anticipated 8,000 passenger car and light truck tyres per day will be produced in Tatabánya from 2009 onwards.

Tip Top Launches Run-Flat Repair Kit

Less than a week after ATS Euromaster launched a national run-flat repair service, Rema Tip-Top has introduced a tyre repair kit specifically designed for the permanent repair of tread injuries to run-flat tyres. According to the company, extensive tests carried out by the German certification body TÜV confirmed the durability of the Rema Tip-Top Minicombi repair system when repairing run-flat tyres. The Minicombi tyre repair procedure (certificate 02109811 002) is designed to repair run-flats with either reinforced sidewalls or support rings without compromising safety.

ATS Euromaster Launches National Run-Flat Fitting and Repair Service

ATS Euromaster is to equip each of its 507 centres across the UK with new technology to enable it to service and carry out minor repairs to the latest generation of run-flat technology tyres. The announcement contrasts with official advice given by the BRMA (now BTMA) and TIC a little over a year ago. Neither body recommended the practice. A technical representative of one leading manufacturer even went as far as saying it is “not prudent” to repair these products.

‘Evolution not Revolution’

The last year saw the gap between the premium and budget CV tyre markets widen as cost conscious fleet managers have opted for lower priced imported tyres. Continental, as a manufacturer just outside the top three in terms of UK commercial vehicle replacement tyre market share, must be examining the market very closely – something that made executives’ recent market research presentation all the more interesting. UK commercial vehicle brand manager, Jill Rodgers, and truck and remould brand manager, Mike Nyren presented the data.

White & Company Move to Michelin Tyre Policy

White & Company plc, the largest independent removal company in the UK, has adopted a fully managed Michelin tyre policy which sees each vehicle in its 155-strong commercial vehicle fleet undergo a detailed monthly tyre inspection. Checks are carried out by ATS Euromaster utilising an electronic data capture (EDC) system which allows their technicians to record each tyre’s condition and tread depth onto a small handheld computer, before uploading the results via mobile phone to a central database. Once collected, the results are sent by email to Michelin, which co-ordinates any tyre replacements or regrooves that are required directly with ATS Euromaster.
