Roman Fleet Switches to ATS Euromaster for Tyres

Roman, a leading UK shower manufacturer and designer, has appointed ATS Euromaster to manage the tyres across its 78-strong fleet of light commercial vehicles and five company cars. The new agreement will see ATS Euromaster provide a complete range of tyre and fast-fit services on a nationwide basis, supporting a mixture of both short and long-wheelbase 3.5 tonne Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans, which are used to deliver shower equipment to retailers. The contract sees the Roman fleet fit a mixture of Michelin, Avon and Hankook tyres being selected as replacements across its vehicles.

Michael Spink, Logistics Director for Roman, commented: “The fleet leasing company we used to use employed the services of ATS Euromaster. When we recently switched to in-house vehicle management we decided to retain their service as it is second-to-none and we could see the clear cost benefits to us.

ATS Euromaster Opened Four New Stores in 2008

On 18 December 2008 ATS Euromaster opened a new service centre in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, its fourth new centre to be opened in the UK during 2008. Built with an investment of more than £1 million, the new fast-fit facility is situated within the Chancery Gate Business Centre in Whiteleaf Road, and joins a network of more than 470 service locations across the UK – including seven in Hertfordshire.

Vince McGurk, Group Operations Director, explained: “We chose to invest in this area following a strategic assessment of our new business opportunities. It highlighted that putting ATS Euromaster firmly on the map in Hemel Hempstead, just off the busy A41 and only three miles from the M25 and M1 motorways, would further strengthen our nationwide service offering…It is also the fourth new centre we have opened in 12 months, joining recent additions in Redruth, Treforest and Bourne End.”

The new team is led by Steve Thomson, centre manager, who brings with him 18 months experience at ATS Euromaster, having previously worked as assistant manager at the company’s dedicated truck facility in Hounslow. The Hemel Hempstead branch has on-site parking for up to 20 cars.

ATS Survey Finds 10% of Fleet Cars Have Tread Below 1.6mm

Almost one in ten cars examined by ATS Euromaster as part of a recent unscheduled tyre safety inspection were found to have at least one tyre which was at or below the legal limit of 1.6 millimetres or another similarly major defect. The surprise car park inspection saw technicians record the tyre tread depth and overall condition of each tyre on 147 cars at a popular conference venue in Birmingham.

Following the inspections, technicians left advice cards warning drivers about their tyre condition. Fourteen vehicles (9.5 per cent) were in red condition, according to the company’s traffic light scale, with one or more tyres at a tread depth at or below the legal limit of 1.6mm, or with a serious defect requiring immediate attention. A further 15 vehicles (10.2 per cent) received ‘amber’ warnings – typically tyres where the tread depth is getting low (2mm or below) or with defects requiring attention. The remaining 118 cars (80.3 per cent) had tyre tread depths above 2mm on all tyres, and no obvious defects.

Hitachi Capital Renews ATS 3-Year Euromaster Contract

ATS Euromaster has signed a major contract renewal with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, extending its agreement to supply Michelin tyres across the company’s car, light commercial vehicle and HGV fleet for a further three years. The agreement also sees ATS Euromaster providing a full-range of fast-fit services to Hitachi Capital’s car and light commercial vehicle customers, including batteries, bulbs, brakes, exhausts, shock absorbers and wipers.

Lloyds TSB Autolease and Michelin Host Fleet Tyre Awareness Days

Lloyds TSB Autolease has been working with ATS Euromaster and Michelin to host Tyre Awareness Days for a cross section of its fleet customers. George Reid, head of technical services for Lloyds TSB Autolease, commented: “Our customers value the knowledge, experience and expertise our suppliers are able to impart and events such as the Tyre Awareness Days directly help to bring down fleet costs.”

One particular recent event was held at the MIRA proving ground, providing a mixture of theory and practice for fleet managers in attendance.

ATS Euromaster Wins Lloyd’s TSB Autolease ‘Conquest’ Deal

ATS Euromaster has gained the Lloyds TSB Autolease tyre supplier contract, the UK’s second largest hire fleet in the car and van sector. The new three year agreement sees Lloyds TSB Autolease adopt a completely new tyre policy with Michelin tyres being fitted as replacements across its fleet. These will be fitted predominantly through ATS Euromaster’s nationwide network of 470 service centres and fleet of mobile service vehicles, which can be booked to fit tyres at a customer’s home or place of work.

Steve Phillips, Deputy Operations Director at Lloyds TSB Autolease, says: “What came out very clearly through the tendering process was ATS Euromaster and Michelin’s willingness to work in partnership with us to deliver a quality service that really adds value to our customers.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Chooses Michelin

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has taken advantage of the pan-government tyre framework agreement available to all public sector organisations (PSOs) across the UK by appointing Michelin and ATS Euromaster as its sole tyre and tyre service supplier. Set-up by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), this tyre sourcing initiative enables West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to benefit from significant efficiencies as a result of combined volumes, additional leverage and collaborative working between central government departments and wider public bodies nationwide.

Mike Walker, Fleet Controller for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, says: “We’ve always fitted Michelin tyres to the fleet, but appointed ATS Euromaster as part of a strategic move to further improve the service standards we receive and to deliver best value. Since ATS Euromaster took over responsibility for supporting our fleet we have seen our average monthly tyre expenditure drop by approximately 20 per cent.

Vacu-Lug Appoints New Business Development Manager

Roy Yeomans has been appointed to the position of Business Development Manager for Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres Limited. Covering the key transport sectors of distribution and logistics, Yeomans will be responsible for further increasing and developing Vacu-Lug’s penetration within the UK’s major fleets.

Having worked for more than 20 years in the commercial vehicle tyre industry, including spells with Continental, National Tyres and ATS Euromaster, Roy Yeomans brings his experience to the Vacu-Lug team. During his career he has fulfilled a number of roles ranging from sales and contracts management to national fleet account management. He was also instrumental in developing Continental’s highly respected training and technical department Entyrety.

Smiths of Bury Choose XDN2 Grip Tyres

Lancashire-based haulier, Smiths of Bury, has taken delivery of two new DAF XF 105 4x2s which have been specified with Michelin’s XDN2 Grip tyres as original equipment. These tyres selling point is that Michelin claims they retain their grip even when two-thirds worn, the XDN2 Grip tyres are being fitted to all new vehicles joining the fleet following an extensive in-house trial which saw a set of XDN2 Grip tyres fitted as replacements on the drive axle of one of the company’s 460 hp Volvo FH12 4×2.

“The driver of the Volvo regularly visits a customer’s premises, which are spread across three levels, with a sharp turn to negotiate at the bottom of a steep incline,” says Tim Laycock, a director of Smiths of Bury. “He was reporting traction difficulties when making the turn, and so we were keen to trial the Michelin XDN2 Grip tyres to see whether they would improve things.

ATS Euromaster Aims For Savings With Recruitment Portal

ATS Euromaster has signed a European-wide contract that will see Bond Talent – online recruitment & talent management software – from stock market-listed Bond International Software implemented throughout 10 countries. The new five-year, six-figure contract is for a fully Bond-hosted recruitment system which will enable the company to manage its entire recruitment through an online portal. ATS Euromaster predicts numerous operational benefits, including that the system will significantly reduce administration costs.

Sigrid Barnes, Group Resourcing Manager for ATS Euromaster, commented: “We are expecting that the system will free up significant amounts of time for our managers. From now on, we will be able to process all of our recruits through one centralized, online portal and everyone from head office through to more than 480 centre managers will be able to see what’s going on in their area of the company – without having to pick up a phone or send an email.”

ATS Euromaster Targets Increased Agricultural Tyre Market Share

Nationwide tyre service provider ATS Euromaster is placing a renewed emphasis on expanding its market share in the agricultural tyre sector, following the appointment of Chris Dolman, to the new position of Category Marketing Executive. The appointment is the first time ATS Euromaster has appointed a Marketing Executive with a specific agricultural remit. ATS Euromaster currently supplies tyres to approximately 15 per cent of this specialist market, supporting farm-based vehicles ranging from wheelbarrows and quad bikes through to combine harvesters and tractors, not to mention cars, vans and larger commercial vehicles often used on farms.

Removal Firm Fits New Michelin XDN2 Grip

The UK’s largest independent removal firm, White & Company, has just taken delivery of a new Scania drawbar combination. The vehicle is the first in the fleet to be fitted with Michelin’s XDN2 Grip tyres on its drive axle.

Roger Brown, White & Company Group Fleet Manager explaines that: “We opted for a full Michelin policy three years ago following successful trials which demonstrated that Michelin tyres have a longer life expectancy and better performance in our fleet than the alternatives. We are now trialling these new XDN2 Grip tyres as they are designed to improve traction in difficult driving conditions, ahead of hopefully rolling them out as standard fitment across similar vehicles in the fleet.”

Costin Says Tyre Change Key to Turnaround

West Midlands-based Costin Logistics, formerly AE Costin Haulage, has adopted a pence per kilometre (PPK) tyre contract in conjunction with Michelin and ATS Euromaster, as part of the company’s turnaround strategy. The PPK structured deal – which is traditionally more common with larger 3PLs – sees Costin Logistics’ fleet of commercial vehicles adopt a fully managed tyre policy whereby the company only pay for the kilometres used on tyres, but without the up front cost of outright purchase. This replaces a rudimentary policy of buying the cheapest rubber, managed internally, with the company holding its own tyre stock.

Craig Bunker, who purchased AE Costin in 2007 through his role as a Managing Director of Key3 Partners, a specialist transport turnaround consultancy, says: “The previous tyre policy was a completely false economy demonstrating the common mistake of focusing on price rather than the overall cost, as it often pays to buy quality.”

Dextra Makes Enlightened Switch

With logistics operations and haulage companies continuing the quest to lower their outgoings in the face of heightened fuel costs, tyre management programs are competing to offer better value; providing greater efficiency – and therefore larger earnings potential – in addition to cost-cutting measures. ATS Euromaster has been particularly active within the market recently, this month announcing two new converts to the organisation’s fleet management service.

Dextra Lighting, the largest privately owned lighting manufacturer in the UK, is switching its entire commercial vehicle fleet to Michelin tyres in a move aimed at reducing its annual tyre expenditure. The company hopes that making the switch will lower costs by up to 10 per cent. The new fitment policy will be supported by a comprehensive service package from nationwide service provider ATS Euromaster.

Michelin Tyres ‘Log’ Solid Benefits for James Jones & Sons

Change is in the air at James Jones & Sons Ltd. The company, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of British timber, has opted for a mix of Michelin XADN and XZM tyres on its range of log handlers and forklifts. This switch in tyre policy is part of a move that sees the mixed fleet of excavators, industrial machinery, trucks and trailers fitted with Michelin tyres as standard, whenever possible.

The radial XADN is, notes Michelin, designed to deliver exceptional reliability in a variety of applications, with its self-cleaning tread pattern providing good traction, flotation and long tyre life. The rugged shoulder design protects the sidewall and enhances durability, whilst the casing and special tread compound provide a cushion for the operator, giving improved handling and comfort.
