Huws Gray a Michelin Convert Following Forklift Trial

Following a year-long trial using Michelin’s XZM tyres, Huws Gray Building Supplies has taken the decision to switch to Michelin product on its 60-vehicle forklift fleet. Michelin states that the 12-month trial with XZM tyres fitted to a Daewoo 30S forklift showed the Michelin tyre to offer reduced downtime and maintenance costs. The forklift was in operation for an average of six hours per day during the evaluation period, on a variety of surfaces ranging from concrete to asphalt and grit, and tyre inspections for wear and damage were conducted every six weeks.

ATS Euromaster Buys 44 New Mobile Tyre Fitting Vans

ATS Euromaster has taken delivery of 44 new 3.5 tonne Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, after investing £1.7 million in increasing the size of its car fitting by roughly 25 per cent. According to the company, the new vehicles will be used to support “the increased demand for mobile fitments which has been driven primarily by the FN50 [top 50 UK contract hire and leasing companies]”, a sector in which ATS Euromaster has reportedly increased its share from 18 to 28 per cent over the last 18 months.

A mix of fleet additions and replacements, the new long wheelbase Sprinters see the dedicated ‘car’ fleet grow to 128 units, supported by a further 200 dual-purpose mobiles which are equipped to fit both car and commercial vehicle tyres.

ATS Euromaster and Michelin Gain Council Contract

ATS Euromaster and Michelin have been jointly appointed by Redditch Borough Council as the supplier of tyres and associated services under a four year framework agreement. The contract covers the authority’s mixed fleet of 150 vehicles, which ranges from vans and agricultural equipment to refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers, as part of a pan-government tyre sourcing initiative established in 2007 via the Office of Government Commerce (OGC).

Focsa Cleans Up Tyre Policy With Michelin

Waste and environmental management specialist Focsa Services UK has selected an all Michelin policy, and the tyre maker reports this move away from budget brands is increasing tyre life amongst Focsa fleet vehicles and reducing tyre related breakdowns. The Focsa agreement covers it mixed fleet of vehicles, which ranges from vans and road sweepers through to 32 tonne refuse collection vehicles. All are being switched to Michelin tyres following trials at a number of the company’s operating centres.

ATS Euromaster Offers Free Battery Checks

ATS Euromaster are urging motorist to have their batteries checked (free of charge) at their local ATS centre, in readiness for the onset of late autumn and winter. According to the company, the fact that the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October normally heralds the start of car and van batteries being put under increased strain, owing to drivers requiring extended use of their headlights and heating system, whilst the colder temperatures at this time of year reduce battery performance.

Michelin Educates Large Fleet Customer, Lloyds TSB Autolease in Tyre Safety

Michelin recently held a three-day event in association with ATS Euromaster at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) for one of its largest fleet customers, Lloyds TSB Autolease (now LEX Autolease). The objective, says the tyre-maker, was to raise awareness of the importance of tyres and tyre pressures in terms of safety and environmental impact. Each day, 25 of Lloyds TSB Autolease’s customers visited the test facility in Warwickshire to take part in interactive workshops covering subjects including tyre wear and damage, tyre construction and the steps Michelin is taking to reduce the environmental impact of its tyres throughout their life (from rubber plantation to disposal).

Waste Removed from PHS’ Tyre Management with ATS Euromaster

A fleet audit highlighting opportunities to improve business has led PHS All Clear and sister company PHS Wastetech to entrust their tyre related needs to ATS Euromaster. The West Sussex based waste management and collection companies will now utilise ATS Euromaster’s fully-managed service package for the management of tyre requirements across its nationwide fleet of 314 trucks, vans and cars.

John Mitchell Signs 5-Year PPK Contract

John Mitchell Haulage & Warehousing, one of Scotland’s largest hauliers, has signed a new five year pence-per-kilometre (PPK) tyre contract. One of the first road transport operators in the country to adopt a PPK approach to its tyre requirements in 1992, ATS Euromaster and Michelin have managed the tyres across the John Mitchell Haulage & Warehousing fleet of commercial vehicles, for over three decades now.

With a mixed fleet of 350 MAN and Mercedes-Benz trucks as well as Dennison trailers operating from its base in Grangemouth, the agreement sees ATS Euromaster support the company with monthly fleet inspections and UK-wide emergency roadside assistance in the event of a tyre-related breakdown.

ATS Euromaster ‘Reviewing’ 80 Branches

ATS Euromaster is embarking on a consultation exercise “reviewing” as many as 80 of its UK centres. According to a company spokesperson, the tyre retail chain currently runs 456 centres, but is looking into the viability of continuing to run some in their present format. Therefore mergers, redundancies and some degree of reorganisation are all being discussed. However the company is apparently not currently looking into the sale of branches.

Continental Opens Czech Warehouse for UK-bound Simex Tyres

Following Continental Tyre Group’s decision to start marketing to start marketing Simex Tyres back in June, news sources are now reporting that the company has opened a warehouse in the Czech Republic to stock the Malaysian-built tyres closer to the UK and Irish markets the materials handling and earthmoving tyres are destined for. According to the Contract Journal, will be positioned above “the cheapest on the market” and will be marketed through existing distributors such as ATS Euromaster and OTR.

ATS Euromaster: Avoidable Tyre Damage Costing Fleets

20 per cent of tyres fitted to major leasing fleet vehicles are being replaced early due to avoidable tyre damage. According to figures published by ATS Euromaster following a review of the tyre replacement cycle across 100,000 lease vehicles, the average remaining tread on tyres removed through damage is 4.8mm. With 1mm of tread equivalent to approximately 4,000 miles, these damaged tyres are achieving less than half their potential life. Across a sample fleet of 25,000 vehicles, this damage is costing over £440,000 each year in wasted mileage potential.

Michelin Trial Proves ‘Food for Thought’ For Frank Wright

A year-long trial with Michelin’s XZM tyres fitted to a single forklift unit has led to animal feed manufacturer Frank Wright Trouw Nutrition International taking the plunge and switching to the Michelin brand across its mixed fleet of 20 diesel and electric powered forklift trucks.

During each day the test unit operated for an average of ten hours on a range of surfaces from asphalt to concrete and grit. The Michelin shod forklift was carefully monitored during the entire period, with monthly tyre inspections to check for wear and damage.

Michelin Names New Commercial Director

Bill Schafer, 42, has been appointed commercial director of Michelin’s truck and bus operations in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Schafer previously spent five years as vice president of Michelin’s North American agricultural division based in Greenville, South Carolina.

Schafer brings 16 years of experience within the Michelin Group and most recently held roles including three years as European key account manager for Michelin Fleet Solutions based at the company’s worldwide headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France, prior to which he was commercial irector of Michelin’s truck operations in Mexico and Central America.
