Last Wake-Up Call

There follows an opinion piece from Jim Smith of Tire review across the Atlantic on the subject of ageing tyres:

I hurtled through a range of negative emotions after watching ABC’s “20/20” assault on the tire industry. After turning the whole thing over in my mind countless times, I finally came to the conclusion that it didn’t really matter.

They were right. 100% right.

ABC’s 10-minute primetime pasting of tire retailers and manufacturers selling so-called “old tires” was dead nuts on.

Brenno Benaglia Appointed New BIPAVER President

BIPAVER, the European federation of tyre retreaders’ associations, has named Brenno Benaglia as its new President. The decision was made on 23 May during the Reifen 2008 exhibition in Essen, Germany. During the meeting, a number of changes were made to the Board of the Federation, in line with the organisation’s constitution.

Brenno Benaglia, represents both AIRP (Italy) and the Marangoni Group and replaces Peter Hülzer of BRV (Germany), who becomes one of the Federation’s two Vice-Presidents. Also appointed Vice-President was Jan Driessen, Chairman of the Retreading Sector in VACO (Netherlands).

Retiring from the board was Richard O’Connell, representing the RMA (UK). BIPAVER Secretary Ruud Spuijbroek thanked O’Connell for his services as President between 2006 and 2007 and as a Vice-President during the past year as well as for his valuable contribution to the Federation’s Technical Committee.

During the General Assembly BIPAVER members approved a change in the Federation’s Constitution, which will allow Federation officers to serve two years in office as opposed to one year, as was previously specified in the constitution. This means that Brenno Benaglia will now serve as BIPAVER President from 2008-2010.

In his acceptance speech Brenno Benaglia commented: “Retreading is going through a complex period and BIPAVER now needs to carry on what it’s doing through strong co-operation with those new tyre producers, who are committed to producing retreadable casings. BIPAVER is an open and independent association and the ideas we have developed over the past year will be framework for our future work together.”

The headline news is that, following negotiations between NTDA director Richard Edy and the RAC Foundation, the respected motoring organisation has pledged its full support for to an industry-wide tyre age check campaign.

ATA Calls for Speed Limit, Limiters

With diesel and gasoline prices at historic highs, the American Trucking Associations is calling for speed limiters on new trucks and a national 65 mph speed limit. The association made the recommendation as part of its call for the Bush Administration to act quickly to ensure an affordable supply of oil for the nation’s 3.5 million truck drivers and American consumers.

As ATA pointed out, fuel costs are beginning to surpass labor as a trucking company’s largest expense, with high fuel costs affecting the cost of everything delivered by truck. The ATA offered a multi-point plan it says will help drive down diesel fuel prices, which included a nationwide maximum speed limit of 65 mph and requiring speed limiters – set at 68 mph – on new trucks. In addition, the ATA called for the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, a national diesel standard, strict action on cases of price gouging, a reduction of regulatory barriers to adding new oil refineries, and a suspension of the 12 per cent FET on the purchase of auxiliary power units which cut off-hour engine idling.

TIA Retreading & Recycling Conference Grows 60%

The Tire Industry Association (TIA) reports that tyre industry visitors to the second Commercial Tire, Retread & Recycling Conference (CTRRC), held in Florida, increased by more than sixty per cent over last year. The CTRRC had 404 registered attendees, including 294 from the commercial/retread market and 110 recyclers who attended the three-day conference that included various seminars, a recycling tour and an equipment demonstration. This meeting was held again in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) of the American Trucking Associations (ATA).

RMA Chief Shea Resigns, Interim In Place

In a surprise move, Don Shea has resigned as president and CEO of the Rubber Manufacturers Association. Shea, according to a statement released by the RMA, left to “pursue other opportunities.” His resignation was accepted by the RMA Executive Committee and is effective immediately.

Dr. Charles Cannon was appointed interim CEO while a search is conducted for a permanent successor. RMA officials expect the search to take six months. Cannon is president of Cannon Consultants, which provides management, funding and consulting services for a range of companies and groups, including trade associations.

North American Retreading Conference Grows in 2008

According to statistics released by TRIB, approximately 18.6 million retreaded tyres were sold in the North America region (US, Canada & Mexico) in 2006, generating sales exceeding US$3 billion. Other sources indicate that the US retreading market alone generated revenues of $1.25 billion in 2006, growing to $1.5 billion the following year. The majority of these were medium truck tyres, and in this market nearly half of all replacement truck tyres fitted to vehicles are now retreads. To keep abreast of developments in this lucrative industry – 2007 gross profit in the US retreading market was estimated at 13 per cent of sales – a number of those associated with the 900 or so retreading facilities operating in North America attended this year’s Commercial Tire, Retread & Recycling Conference (CTRRC) in Florida between February 5 and 8.

TyreSafe to Run Bike Tyre Safety Month

For the first time, TyreSafe is mounting a tyre safety campaign throughout the month of March to highlight the dangers of defective or badly worn tyres on motorcycles and scooters. TyreSafe has already received support for its initiative from BikeSafe, the UK police force road safety campaign, which will culminate in a major bike safety show to be held at the police training centre in Hendon, North London, during the last week of March. TyreSafe is also hoping to gain support for the campaign from trade associations within the motorcycle industry.

First Reifen China Attracts Over 5800 Visitors

The organisers of the first Reifen China exhibition have published visitor attendance and exhibitor numbers from the inaugural “Asian Essen Show.” Held in parallel with Tyres & Rubber Tech China, a total of 5812 visitors from 41 countries passed through the show between 14 and 16 November. Of these, 16 per cent were described as overseas visitors. 88 exhibitors from 13 nations took stands in Shanghai, with the vast majority (68 per cent) directly from the tyre, casing and tube business. 16 per cent of exhibits represented press, publishing and associations; while 4 per cent originated from the equipment and vulcanisation sectors.

‘Manufacturers…Drive the Grey Market’

Almost six years to the day after the Levi versus Tesco ruling (see page three for more on this), Kumho UK managing director, Steve Tidmarsh, used his recent NTDA Tyre Wholesalers Group (TWG) speech to address the subject of grey importing in a refreshingly direct fashion. “The grey market,” he observed, “always seems to increase when supply rates are poor.” He continued: “For some reason this enrages wholesalers, but let us be fair, it is often exploited by them. However, to balance that, it is also right to state that it is the manufacturers who drive the grey market and currently with the weak US dollar products are a-plenty,” he explained.

European Associations Launch Right to Repair Campaign

Automotive aftermarket and motorist representatives have today launched the Right to Repair Campaign at Equip’Auto 2007 to safeguard consumer choice and effective competition in the market for vehicle replacement parts, tools and equipment, servicing and repair.

“Vehicles are more and more becoming “computers on wheels”, stated Campaign spokesperson Sylvia Gotzen. “While technological innovations provide better emissions control as well as more safety and comfort, they have made it increasingly challenging to service or repair a vehicle. Fair and full access for independent market operators to technical information, multi-brand diagnostic tools as well as test equipment, replacement parts and training is therefore more than ever crucial to be able to provide European motorists with the quality service and parts they deserve in the aftermarket care of their vehicles”, she explained.

Redline Completes Progetto Marangoni

After six months of hard work, this summer saw Redline complete is Progetto Marangoni project car. German Reifen Exhibition Expands Into China

The Chinese tyre market is becoming ever more interesting, and not only for tyre manufacturers and wholesalers. The organisers of tyre-related exhibitions are also taking a much closer look at this – as it seems – market of boundless opportunities. This November the organisers of the “Reifen” show in Essen, Germany, are organising for the very first time an equivalent in China, the so-called “Reifen China”. The organisers from Messe Essen GmbH and the China United Rubber (Group) Corp. are hoping to host a successful premiere show in Shanghai. The annual Reifen China show will take place concurrently with the “Rubber Tech China” show, both held under the same roof. Klaus Reich, director trade fairs and exhibitions with Messe Essen GmbH, and in this function also responsible for Reifen China, explains in an interview with Tyres & Accessories why his company is taking the Reifen show to China, what the expectations for this November’s show are and what exhibitors and visitors will get in Shanghai when they come to Reifen China.
