Work on Lanxess Singapore Rubber Facility Gets Underway

Ground has been broken on Lanxess’ new butyl rubber factory site in Singapore. When completed, the Jurong Island facility will have a 100,000 tonne capacity, which Lanxess states will enable it to meet the rising Chinese and Indian demand for butyl rubber to use tyre production. Following a total investment of up to 400 million euros – 10 to 15 per cent of which will be directed into environmental protection measures – production is anticipated to get underway in the first quarter of 2013.

Sibur, Reliance Industries Enter Butyl Rubber JV

India’s Reliance Industries Ltd. and Russian petrochemical company Sibur have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a joint venture in India to produce butyl rubber at Reliance’s integrated petrochemical site in Jamnagar, Gujarat state. According to the MoU, Sibur will provide proprietary technology for butyl rubber polymerisation and its finishing, while Reliance will supply monomers and provide the infrastructure and utilities for the venture.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Gears Up for Centenary Celebrations

As part of its centenary celebrations, Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has commissioned the publication of a new book and commemorative film that tell the story of the company’s past and present and outline its future direction. Both will be launched at a gala event held to coincide with the opening of the Farnborough International Air Show on July 19. The evening event at the Wapping Project is anticipated to bring together many of the company’s customers, suppliers and senior figures from the aviation sector.

Continental Eyes India and Russia

International News

A report on the Bloomberg Business Week website suggests that Continental AG will decide this year on building car-tyre plants in India and Russia to tap those countries' growth while avoiding import restrictions. In an interview, Nikolai Setzer, head of Continental's car-tyre unit, said: "It's obvious that we need to have local production in India and Russia if we want to be a strong player there. We are still evaluating different concepts and ideas, but we do want to have a decision this year."

Yokohama Philippines Receives 2nd CDC Award

For the second year in a row, Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. (YTPI) has received an Outstanding Recognition for Overall Performance award from Clark Development Corporation (CDC). YPTI president Takayuki Hamaya received the award from Philippines president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during a ceremony held on April 21.

Goodyear Seeing the Benefit’s of Last Year’s Actions – Kramer

“We are very pleased with our strong first quarter performance,” stated Goodyear’s recently appointed president and chief executive officer, Richard J. Kramer, upon the release of the company’s January 1 to March 31 results. The US tyre maker reports an improvement in tyre unit volumes, sales and segment operating income during the quarter, as well as a “significantly” smaller net loss despite a one-time charge related to the currency devaluation in Venezuela.

Bridgestone Signs Supply Agreement with Volvo Group

A long-term contract for the supply of original equipment truck tyres has been signed between Bridgestone Europe and Volvo Group. The tyre maker states that the terms of this agreement represent a significant increase in market share for Bridgestone and cover a wide range of truck tyres, including the new Bridgestone R249 EVO and R297 EVO steer tyres.

UAE Distributor ZAFCO Announces Retail Plans

One of the Middle East’s leading tyre distribution companies has announced its plan to open 65 automotive service outlets by 2012 at a dinner for its United Arab Emirates partners. ZAFCO is a supplier to the UAE domestic market, and a global supplier to customers in the USA, Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and Australia, has revealed details of its ambitious expansion plans. The Dubai-based company is set to launch its own chain of premium quality retail outlets across the GCC.

Bekaert Opens Asia R&D Centre

On April 20 Bekaert open its first research and development centre outside of Belgium. The Asia Research and Development Center in China’s Jiangsu Province is intended to strengthen the company’s “commitment to develop and supply innovative products to Asian customers while enhancing its technological leadership in the region.”

Freight Forwarding Pricing Turned Upside Down

Just a few short weeks after reporting on the significant ongoing price rises in the cost of international container shipping and predicting that there was yet more to come, industry sources are now saying that the situation has been turned upside down, with many companies now cutting prices in competition with each other.

“Things have been turned on their heads in recent days and this is having a significant knock on effect on rates. Some of the shipping lines didn’t raise rates recently when many of the others did and now many carriers are price cutting to remain competitive and are aggressively targeting new customers,” Rob Shelley of Suffolk-based freight forwarder Maritime Cargo Services told Tyres & Accessories.

Month-Long Tyre Workers’ Strike Ends

The strike that had frozen production at Pakistan’s General Tyre and Rubber Company (Gentipak) for a month has come to an end. The industrial dispute at the country’s largest tyre manufacturer, of which Continental is a minority shareholder, began on March 16 after management refused to a accept charter of demands put forward by the workers’ labour union. These demands included wage increases and the appointment of workers to permanent positions.

Casumina 2009 Profits Exceed All Expectations

The Southern Rubber Industry Joint Stock Company, better known by its trading name Casumina, reports attaining sales of 2,496,309 million dong (£84.0 million) during 2009, up 116.17 per cent on the previous year’s sales and 146.37 per cent more than expected sales for the year. The Vietnamese tyre maker’s after tax profit totaled 290,642 million dong (£9.8 million), a whopping 3,240.5 per cent higher than in 2008 and 664.33 per cent greater than the year’s expected after tax profit.

Pirelli Star Driver Kicks off for 2010

The second season of the Pirelli Star Driver programme gets underway on April 15 at the Rally of Turkey, and Pirelli Star Driver supervisor Phil Short anticipates his fresh charges’ first taste of World Rally Championship action will teach them plenty. “I’ve already suggested to them that they treat the Rally of Turkey as an extended test session, to get more distance and time in the car under their belts – and to think about bringing the cars to the finish with a solid result,” he advised, adding: “You don’t learn too much when your car is on a trailer.”
