Aeolus 'creating a name for itself' in UK CV tyre market

Chinese TBR manufacturer, Aeolus made its first appearance as an exhibitor at the CV Show at the 2013 edition. Appearing alongside its UK distributor Kings Road Tyres, the manufacturer says its presence resulted in product sales and strong visitor feedback. The fast-growing brand is trying to increase awareness in the UK, and amongst its range were two new patterns: the ASR69 and ADR69 truck tyres which are now available in popular sizes 295/80R22.5, 315/70R22.5 and 315/80R22.5.

Conti appoints new China head

As of 1 August 2013, Continental’s Chinese activities will be overseen by Executive Board member Dr. Ralf Cramer. The incumbent head of the company’s Chassis & Safety division will take up the Shanghai-based position in order to “strengthen” Continental’s organisation for “sustained fast and profitable growth in China.” His successor within the Chassis & Safety division will be appointed at a later date.

Maxxis: Sales have grown US$2 billion in five years

Maxxis International has reported another strong year of growth for the 12 months to January 2013. Results from the last financial year show Maxxis tyre sales figures surpassing US$4.5 billion for the first time, up over $2 billion in the last five years alone. The company reports that despite an adverse global economy and substantial investment in research and development, increased manufacturing capacity, its new academy and latest testing facilities, Maxxis has still succeeded in posting net earnings of well over $1 billion.

Vipal launching new products, re-purposed factory at Autopromotec 2013

Brazilian retread materials manufacturer, Vipal has announced plans to launch a couple of new tread products at this year’s Autopromotec. The 25th edition of the show coincides with the fact that Vipal itself turns 40 this year, making it something of a double celebration for the company.

Continental develops infotainment system for PSA China

Continental has developed a new Multimedia Radio Navigation (MRN) System for the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group in China. The product was launched with the Dongfeng Citroën C4 L car model in March 2013 and will later be available in different vehicles. Based on Continental’s scalable Multimedia Platform concept, the MRN System is the first navigation solution of Continental, exclusively tailor-made for a Chinese vehicle manufacturer. The development was mainly done by experts in Shanghai and Singapore, thus marking an important milestone for the development activities in Asia.

Cooper Tire posts record Q1 profit

Although year-on-year sales were down 12.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2013, Cooper Tire & Rubber nevertheless managed to more than double operating profit and net income during the January to March period. Net sales amounted to US$862 million, a decrease of $123 million compared with the same period a year ago. Operating profit was a first quarter record of $97 million, up 103 per cent from the first quarter of 2012 and 11.2 per cent of net sales. The company reported net income attributable to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company of $0.87 per share, or $56 million, in the first quarter. This is 160 per cent higher than the $22 million, or $0.34 per share, for the same period last year.

GfK: Central Malaysia PCR sales 1.2 million units in 1Q 2013

Increased affluence and the rise of car ownership is creating demand for passenger car tyres in Malaysia’s booming central region. The latest GfK retail audit report shows that sales of passenger car tyres in the high traffic states of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have been rising consecutively in the last two years, with the first quarter of this year reporting a surge of 14.6 per cent over the same period in 2012.

Vulcanisation is known to be bottleneck in tyre production that can significantly influence a factory’s output. Siemens specialises in the field of automation and as such it aims to provide the tyre industry with “greater efficiency” in this particular area. Toyo completes new Malaysian tyre plant

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co president Akira Nobuki has announced the completion of the company’s new tyre plant in Malaysia (TTM). Toyo is progressing towards a three-region global supply system as outlined in the company’s 2011 mid-term business plan, with factories in North America, Japan and Asia. Toyo’s Asia operations are in a process of expanded motorisation where further growth of demand is expected. Toyo is positioning Asia as a vital strategic market that will provide a boost to its business foundation.

Bridgestone sales up 9% in Q1

In a quarter punctuated by recovering domestic and US markets, a stagnant and unstable European economy, and slowing economic expansion in Asia, Bridgestone Corporation posted net sales of ¥794.5 billion (£5.2 billion) in the three months from 1 January to 31 March, a year-on-year increase of nine per cent. Operating income amounted to ¥74.4 billion (£483.6 million), 18 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2012, while operating margin rose 0.7 per cent year-on-year to 9.4 per cent. Ordinary income was up 14 per cent to ¥70.1 billion (£455.6 million), and net income rose two per cent to ¥43.1 billion (£280.1 million).

Pirelli celebrates 50 years of Lamborghini supply

It’s now half a century since Pirelli first teamed up with Lamborghini, and celebrations to mark the golden anniversary began with a press conference at the Pirelli Foundation on 7 May, at which Pirelli chief technical officer Maurizio Boiocchi stated “we look forward to another 50 years together with Lamborghini.” The festivities will progress to Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata, taking in Forte dei Marmi, Rome and Bologna along the way.

Apollo opens ASEAN hub in Thailand

Apollo Tyres has opened its sales hub to the ASEAN region in Bangkok. The region has become one of Apollo’s strongest export markets for its India produced tyres, the company said. Over the last three years, Apollo said the region has doubled in sales.

Growth in new markets giving Deldo a better spread

When Tyres & Accessories spoke with Deldo’s Rutger Veerman in the last week of March, he and several colleagues from the Belgium-based wholesaler had just returned from the Tyrexpo Asia show in Singapore. In addition to praising the exhibition as “the best show in Asia”, Veerman shared that Deldo’s presence at Tyrexpo Asia was important as Asia represents a region that is increasingly important for the company.
