Apollo Tyres Campaigns for Road Safety in Iran

Apollo Tyres launched its Safe Drive campaign in the capital city of Tehran recently. The initiative seeks to improve safety by educating drivers and owners on various aspects of tyre care and maintenance – including inflation pressure and tread-wear checks. Members of Apollo’s International Sales team, along with Apollo’s business partners conducted tyre checks at petrol pumps on major highways for two days. The company hopes that this contact with ordinary customers will ensure safer driving on the highways, during the Iranian New Year celebrations, when families enjoy undertaking road trips.

Apollo Tyres’ products have been available in Iran for the last few years. To fulfill growing customer requirements, Apollo is planning to introduce its truck-bus radial range in Iran later this year. However, the company exports primarily truck and bus cross ply tyres and passenger car radial tyres to Iran from India. The acceptance of Apollo products is clear in the "manifold growth" the company has witnessed in its sales of both passenger and truck-bus tyres in the last three years.

Apollo Tyres Co-Hosts First Indian CV Awards

In association with ‘CV’, a commercial vehicle themed magazine for the Indian market, Apollo Tyres has held the first dedicated awards for the commercial vehicle segment in India – the Apollo-CV Awards 2010. The awards ceremony took place on March 8, and a total of 23 awards were conferred upon vehicle and ancillary component manufacturers. The evening saw Tata Motors walk away with the two most significant awards – CV Maker of the Year and CV of the Year, honours bestowed upon the vehicle manufacturer for its Tata Prime 4028 S. The title of CV Man of the Year was conferred on Dr Abhay Firodia, chairman and managing director of Force Motors Limited.

No European Plant for Apollo, Vredestein Plant Gets Nod

India’s Apollo Tyre has apparently dropped plans to build a new tire plant in Europe, and will instead turn its attention to expanding its Vredestein facility in the Netherlands, reports Tire Review.

Apollo Completes Vehicle Dynamics Workshop in Chennai

Indian manufacturer Apollo Tyres has completed its second Vehicle Dynamics Workshop in the southern Indian city of Chennai. Apollo began the Workshop two years ago as a biannual platform for auto and tyre-makers, tyre testing authorities and homologation bodies to discuss vehicle dynamics, its facets, complexities, issues being faced and ways and means of addressing them. The company says the Workshop comes at a time when regulations across the world are being tightened, and both car and tyre makers are actively seeking ways to bring out products, which meet customer needs of safety, fuel efficiency, price and comfort while applying environmentally safe options.

Apollo to Boost International Capacity

An anticipated increase in demand within Africa and the expectation of growing OE sales in Europe have led Apollo Tyres to plan capacity increases in these two regions. The Wall Street Journal reports the company’s South African activities involve the investment of US$30 million this year at its two Dunlop facilities there in order to boost passenger car radial capacity from 10,000 units per day to 12,500, while truck and bus tyre capacity is to be lifted from the current daily level of 800 units to between 1,200 and 1,500 tyres.

Apollo Tyres Pulls Out of Mission 2018

Apollo has ended its key sponsorship deal of India’s quest to find the country’s first tennis Grand Slam singles champion by 2018. A statement issued by the company praised the “stellar performances” of the children taken on by the programme, and said the decision to end its sponsorship was “regrettable” and “extremely unfortunate”, according to The Hindu in India.

Apollo Hosts Three-Day India Conclave

Earlier this month, Apollo Tyres brought together its high performing business partners for an India conclave, reports Tire Review. Partners qualified for the event by achieving challenging sales targets in the commercial vehicle tyre category in 2009. The initiative, organized under Apollo’s International Marketing Program for exports out of India, was christened “Jai Ho” after one of the Oscar-winning lyrics from the movie Slumdog Millionaire, and literally meaning “may you be victorious.” The reward for this victory was an all-expense-paid, three-day incentive trip to India.

Apollo Registers Tyre Pressure Safety Concerns on Indian Market

One of India’s largest tyre manufacturers has released a statement looking at the link between the 250-plus deaths that occur on the country’s roads every day and the recently observed statistic that 75 per cent of vehicles run on incorrect tyre pressure. Apollo Tyres’ survey found that amongst 36,000 tyres tested over six months, “only 22 per cent of cars… had with the OE recommended inflation.” The company suggests that while the winter season sees the highest number of road accidents, with “fog, cold, roadside revelry and…drinking and driving… the major causes”, perhaps incorrect tyre pressure should also be addressed as part of the problem. Apollo began the self-titled “Safe Drive” programme in 2006 “to educate and create awareness on the benefits of proper tyre care among passenger car and commercial vehicle users.”

Dunlop Zimbabwe Extends Factory Shutdown

Botswana based publication The Business Diary reports that a shortage of raw materials has prompted Dunlop Zimbabwe to extend its annual shutdown period, and this decision has led to unrest amongst the company’s workforce. The Apollo Tyres South Africa owned company was scheduled to re-open its factory on January 11, however company officials say production will now commence on February 11 – provided it has obtained the necessary raw materials by that time.

Neeraj Kanwar is new ATMA Chairman

Neeraj Kanwar, managing director of Apollo Tyres Ltd, has been elected chairman of the Indian the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA). Kanwar was unanimously elected as the next chairman at the association’s Annual General Meeting yesterday (14 January 2010) and is by far the youngest ATMA Chairperson so far since its inception in 1975.

Apollo Still Contemplating Eastern Europe Greenfield Plant?

Although Apollo Tyres, as CFO Sunam Sarkar told Indian publication Outlook Business in December, decided to pass up on the acquisition of Mexico’s Tornel, it is by no means ready to stop its global growth. The magazine reports that plans for a presence in Eastern Europe are still on the agenda.

Apollo Ranked in Indian Top 10 for Shareholder Return

According to a study undertaken by one of India’s leading business magazines, Outlook Business, Apollo Tyres is the tenth highest ranked Indian multinational company in terms of shareholder returns. Apollo is the only tyre manufacturer to appear in the top ten, and according to its 2008-09 financial year results, delivered a 10.5 per cent CAGR return to shareholders. Commenting on Outlook Business’s acknowledgement of the company’s performance, Kankana Das from Apollo Tyres’ corporate relations stated “as a tyre company, we take special pride in being in the top ten.”

Apollo to Increase India Prices

The Indian Express newspaper brings news that Apollo Tyres is increasing prices in its domestic market. “We have taken the decision to increase prices by 5 to 10 per cent towards the end of this month,” Satish Sharma, Apollo’s chief of India Operations is reported as saying. “Farm tyres, which consume the largest bulk of natural rubber, will see a 10 per cent increase. The increase in other non-truck tyre categories will be between 5 to 7 per cent.”

Apollo’s Passenger Tyre ‘Grand Masters’ Meet in Beijing

International News

Some 186 Apollo Tyres dealers assembled in Beijing on the first weekend of December for the tyre maker’s “Grand Master Business Partners” meeting. A total of 170 India based partners and 16 international dealers, all of whom exceeded their projected passenger car tyre sales targets over the last twelve months, attended a three-day meeting with company officials in the Chinese capital. Apollo’s strategy for the coming year was shared with the partners, including specific plans and products relating to the passenger tyre segment. The ‘Grand Masters’ were also invited to give their own specific feedback.
