Mitas Tyres on Tractor Drag-Racing Champion

A “New Bufalo” Landini tractor fitted with Mitas 65 series tyres won the classic Italian tractor-pulling contest held in San Pancrazio, near Parma on 12 September 2010. The 14 teams featuring such poetic names as Baby Tornado (second), Cobrabite (fifth) and Speedy (last) met for the 11th time since 1999 to match their power tractors in this “nerves of steel” battle for primacy.

“This extreme tractor sport is electrifying,” said Gaetano Mellia of CGS Pneumatici Italia. CGS Tyres produces Mitas-brand tractor tyres. “Unlike in other sports, the sportsmen compete with end-user machines driving on end-user tyres with the lugs cut off. The tractor’s horsepower preserved by the tyre is one secret ingredient of victory.”

Mitas Considering $50 million Investment in Czech Republic

Mitas a.s. has reportedly signed a “Declaration of Understanding” to build a new tyre production plant in the Czech Zlín Region, an essential step for the realization of the project. Contracts are said to be being drawn up currently. Mitas, a division of Czech Rubber Group CGS Tyres, is reportedly planning a 1 billion Czech koruny (£34 million, 40.65 million euros, US$53.73 million) investment in the Holešov Industrial Zone in the Czech Republic.

According to a Holešov Industrial Zone statement, the company is planning to build the plant at the end of next year and it will be fully operating in 2014. The site is expected to employ 500-550 people. The new factory will reportedly require 6.5 hectares of land, with the option for another 6 hectares. Mitas plans to produce mainly tyres agricultural tyres in Holešov. It has found several suitable places for realization of its intention, and finally it has been decided for Holešov.

Guizhou Tyre Aiming to Expand in UK and European Markets

Chinese tyre manufacturer Guizhou Tyre Company Ltd has maintained a relatively low profile in the UK up till now, but this is reportedly about to change as a result of the company’s decision to raise its profile with a stand at next month’s Brityrex in Manchester (5-7 October). Here’s how one company representative explained it: “The promotion of our brands within Europe and in the UK especially has been relatively low key in the past. We have now taken the strategic decision to expand our brand profile and distribution network across Europe in general and in particular the UK.” The Guizhou stand at Brityrex will exhibit products from the Advance range of radial/bias OTR tyres, radial truck tyres, agricultural tyres and industrial/fork lift tyres.

10% Turnover Penalty Requested for South Africa Tyre Cartel Participants

South Africa’s Competition Commission reports it has referred a complaint of collusive tendering, price fixing, information exchange and market allocation against the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (Pty) Ltd (SATMC) and the four tyre manufacturers and suppliers it represents to the Competition Tribunal for adjudication.

Nokian Increases Ply Rating With Latest Forest King F Size

In introducing the newest size in its Forest King F range, Nokian Tyres has described it as the “world’s strongest forest tyre”. Intended for fitment on CTL (cut-to-length) harvesters, the range has been extended to include size 710/45-26.5, the first tyre in the line-up to have a Ply Rate of 24. Nokian states that the cross-ply tyre “offers the best available reliability and load-bearing capacity for modern harvesters and forwarders.”

Trelleborg Launches New Twin Radial Tyre

Trelleborg Wheel Systems has launched a new 710/50 R26.5 twin radial tyre. According to the company, the new product offers enhanced flotation characteristics that protect the soil, the driver’s health, lowers noise levels and contributes to reduced overall operating costs for the farmer. The twin radial features a 15 per cent wider footprint area, additional lugs and a longer central block compared to the previous version. This means an increased land/sea ratio and 14 per cent deeper lugs.

CGS Tyres to Buy EDP

Czech off-road tyre producer CGS Tyres has agreed to acquire the sales unit of the Saint-Paul-lès-Romans-based L’Européenne de pneumatiques (EDP), a French veteran of agricultural and industrial tyre sales of 25 years. The sale of Mitas-branded tyres by CGS Pneu France directly on the French market, including a transfer of the major customers of EDP of both original equipment and replacement markets, will begin immediately.

CGS Tyres Confirms US Plant for Ag Radials

CGS Tyres has today confirmed it will build the production plant for agricultural tyres reported on tyrepress.com over the past two months. A $43.81 million investment will allow the Czech company to build its new plant in Charles City, Iowa. Company representatives and the Iowa Department of Economic Development signed an investment agreement at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, marking the end to negotiations that begun in 2009. The company said the plant would create at least 159 new jobs for local residents. Production is scheduled to commence by 1 January, 2012.

Sibur-Russian Tyres to Supply Cuban State

Sibur-Russian Tyres has been awarded a US$8 million contract to supply Cuba’s Ministry of Agriculture with tyres. Under the arrangement the Russian tyre maker will ship 40,000 truck and agricultural tyres to the Caribbean nation. Sibur-Russian Tyres states the decision to participate in the tender process for this contract lines up with its strategy of entering the Central and Latin American markets. The company has already entered into contracts to supply products to Brazil, Venezuela and Ecuador.

CGS Receives State Funding for US Plant

On August 19 it was announced that the Iowa Economic Development Board, an Iowa state government agency, has awarded CGS Tires US $924,000 from its Grow Iowa Values Fund. This amount, the board reports, will be used to support 154 of the 192 jobs to be created when the Czech Republic’s first factory in North America is built. The total project cost is $43.8 million and involves reconfiguring the former Winnebago Industries manufacturing facility in Charles City for the production of radial agricultural tyres, amongst other products.

Goodyear Hiring Staff as Luxembourg Production Increases

On Monday August 9 Goodyear officially ended the reduced working hours introduced at Goodyear’s tyre making facility in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg during the recession. Following an extended freeze on new recruitment the company is now seeking new employees, report local media sources. Approximately 170 workers will be taken on in the near future, and the production of truck, OTR and agricultural tyres has now returned to 70 per cent capacity; in 2008 this figure fell to 40 per cent. Management anticipates the plant will reach full capacity again in two to three years’ time.

Belshina to Establish Brazil Presence

International News

Belarus based tyre maker Belshina intends to establish an office for distributing its products in Brazil this year. Parent company Belneftekhim reports the office will be located in Sao Paulo and is scheduled to open this autumn. The Brazil office will distribute a wide range of Belshina products on the Brazilian market, including truck and agricultural tyres – products the company notes are most in demand there.

Olympic Skier Harvests European Tractor Record

Sometimes you just have to do something to prove it can indeed be done. Olympic medallist Giorgio Di Centa may have had this thought in mind as he steered his tractor, a Same Silver3 110, up to a height of 3,175 metres at the Pirovano ski hut in Italy’s Stelvio Pass. Di Centa achieved this unusual goal using CGS manufactured Continental AC70 T agricultural tyres fitted with König snow chains. Upon his arrival, he could warm himself with the thought that he had driven a tractor higher than anyone else in Europe, a feat attested to by the Italian Timekeepers Association (Federazione Italiana Cronometristi). On his way to this dizzying height, Di Centa encountered terrain that varied between paved road, stone and ice.

Michelin CerexBib Designed for Heavy Loads from Modern Harvesters

Farmers today are harvesting crops during the short peak maturity period in an effort to increase yield per hectare, and harvester productivity plays a key role in this. This is increasingly common practice as farms increase in size and farmers come under pressure to carry on in less than optimal weather conditions. During wheat harvests, today’s machinery covers six hectares an hour, compared with just one in 1965.

Michelin Demonstrates Benefits of XeoBib’s “Ultraflex Technology” at Contractor Panel

Michelin’s signature on an agreement to extend its cooperation with agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas was somewhat pre-empted in June when the French tyre giant held its Agricultural Contractor Panel (MACP) in association with Claas, using the latter company’s UK base on Saxham Business Park in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk. Tyres & Accessories saw the panel meet for its tractor in field fuel saving workshop, where Michelin demonstrated the importance of the correct tyre choice, proper tyre maintenance and the benefits offered by the company’s XeoBib tyre, which has been developed using the company’s patented “Ultraflex” technology for “larger farming and contracting operations”. In terms of cost and environmental pressures, fuel preservation is one factor constantly near the forefront of many businesses, especially as a potential route to improving profitability and productivity.
