A1GP and Ferrari Announce Partnership

A1GP Chairman, Tony Teixeira, has announced a “ground breaking partnership” between Ferrari and the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. Ferrari has signed a six-year agreement to manufacture and supply all A1GP engines and will consult on the design and manufacture of all A1GP car chassis for use in Season Four (2008/09).

The partnership with Ferrari extends to an exclusive licensing agreement for all A1GP merchandise to use the Ferrari name and phrase ‘Powered by Ferrari’ from January 2008.

Hankook to Test in Spain

Hankook has signed a long-term agreement securing its use of the Applus+ IDIADA proving ground in Barcelona, arguably the most comprehensive independent proving ground facilities in Europe. The 370-hectare site near the Spanish capital contains a host of facilities including a 7.5 kilometre high-speed circuit, off-road track and a soon to be commissioned wet track. The Korean tyremaker will begin testing there early next year.

The use of this facility comes on top of the 1600 metre wet handling track Hankook has recently built adjacent to its Geumsan plant in South Korea.

NTDA to Sponsor Brityrex 2009

The NTDA has signed a sponsorship agreement with Brityrex 2009 organisers ECI International for the next exhibition, scheduled to be held at Manchester’s G-Mex centre between September 22 and 24. As part of the agreement, the association’s annual dinner and TAFF Awards presentation will be held alongside the show, as was done successfully this year. The dinner and awards ceremony will take place on September 23.

“We feel the exhibition is vitally important to our members, and the industry as a whole, and we are delighted to be providing our active support to the event,” commented the NTDA’s national chair Peter Gaster. “The 2006 exhibition was a great success for my company, KRT. We have already booked our space for 2009 and I look forward to providing my backing in the run-up to 2009.”

BFG Reups With SCORE as Official Tire

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America has signed an extension agreement to keep its BFGoodrich brand as the official tyre of the SCORE International and Desert Racing Series. The new agreement runs through the 2018 racing season, MNA said.

“BFGoodrich Tires has become synonymous with off-road desert racing through its support of SCORE International and we are excited that they are continuing their efforts and service to off-road racing professionals and amateur competitors,” said Sal Fish, SCORE president and CEO.

“SCORE International and its desert racing series has been the perfect platform for BFGoodrich to develop the world’s toughest off-road tyres while supporting the sport’s most distinguished competitors,” said Todd Steen, motorsports marketing manager for MNA’s BFGoodrich unit. “We’re thrilled to support SCORE International and its associated off-road events which showcase the heritage and accomplishments of our products at the highest levels.”

Amerityre Signs License Agreement with Desert Research Technology

Amerityre Corporation has entered into a Manufacturing License Agreement with Desert Research Technology, Inc. (DRT), granting DRT the exclusive, worldwide rights to manufacture paddle-type sand tyres that employ Amerityre’s polyurethane elastomer chemicals. DRT will first use the Amerityre technology to create polyurethane treads/paddles on conventional rubber tyre casings, but their goal is to manufacture the entire tyre from polyurethane materials.

US-China to Sign Quick Recall Pact

(Akron/Tire Review) NHTSA and the Chinese government will sign an agreement Sept. 12 that will help speed the recall of defective auto parts. The “memorandum of cooperation” gives NHTSA a tool to speed recalls of Chinese-made goods. If the agreement had been in place this summer when concerns arose about the tires, “we would have felt much more comfortable reaching out to the Chinese government and asking for their assistance,” said Nicole Nason, NHTSA administrator.

US Tyre Recall Saga Could Be Over

Foreign Tire Sales Inc.’s quarter-million US recall of Hangzhou Zhongce-produced tyres will end on 25 October, according to US news sources. At the same time US and Chinese regulators are expected to sign a cooperation agreement that could help resolve disputes like this. However, according to media reports, this is not the first time such an approach has been taken. The Consumer Product Safety Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with its Chinese counterpart three years ago.

This week’s Sino-U.S. Consumer Product Safety Summit brings together the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and China’s General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, as well as representatives of American companies that import toys, fireworks and cigarette lighters from China. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has a $63 million budget and a full-time staff of about 400 people to monitor billions of dollars’ worth of goods. Legislation is in the works to strengthen the agency.

Never Lose Your Cool

Living in an environment so cold that even a polar bear thinks twice about popping out for a pint a milk can have its advantages. The lawn doesn’t need mowing very often and there’s no real cause for concern if the tub of ice cream is left out overnight. Plus, if you just happen to be in the business of testing winter tyres, nature will bless you with ideal working conditions day after day.

Test World is located in such a place. Based in Ivalo, Finnish Lapland, some 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Test Word is the world’s northernmost winter testing facility. Every year when it gets cold in Ivalo – which, given its balmy May average temperature of 5ºC, is most months – tyre, vehicle and other manufacturers and importers, regulatory authorities, technical institutes and intrepid media representatives rug up and head north in order to put tyres, not to mention a huge range of different products, through their paces.

Settlement Reached in Ex-Union Workers’ Complaint

(Akron/Tire Review) Avoiding a formal hearing before the National Labor Relations Board, USW Local 2 (Akron) reached a settlement in the complaint made by former union members who claimed they were fined and harassed after crossing picket lines during the 86-day USW strike against Goodyear.

The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, which represented the three former union workers, said the settlement was reached last week.

The former union members claimed they were fined $620 each and subjected to harassment at their homes and on the job. USW Local 2 claimed it had the right to fine the members for quitting the union during a strike, but denied the harassment claims.

The settlement calls for Local 2 to post a document in the Akron Goodyear plant telling union members to refrain from ”threatening bargaining unit employees with internal union fines and termination,” and to not attempt to intimidate employees at their homes or otherwise attempt to coerce them. The union will also drop all internal charges against the three workers and expunge their union records.

While the settlement states that the agreement ”does not constitute an admission that the Charged Party violated the National Relations Act,” it does allow the three workers to pursue civil action against the union.

South African Tyre Manufacturing Strike Continues

South Africa’s tyre manufacturing sector strike has failed to reach a settlement despite previous high hopes. Workers have already accepted the proposed wage increase offer but have not been able to reach an agreement with employers on issues related to contract work and employees’ benefits.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the Employers Association have met to find a resolution to the strike, however Numsa provincial secretary Irvin Jim reports that a new complication has arisen. “At the eleventh hour, employers approached negotiations with a new demand. They want to secure a three-year agreement. We were forced as a union to place on the table what we demand on wages for the next two years, which is 8 per cent for the next year and 8.5 per cent for the third year.

“Under these circumstances we think it is time that we remain very strong and solid. The strike must continue because we can’t sell-out for the second and third year.”

Court Decides CTNA Must Pay Health Benefits

Following a US court ruling Continental Tire North America has been given the responsibility of compensating the healthcare expenses of a number of retired employees from plants in Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina and California. The US district court in Toledo, Ohio decided that the company improperly reduced the health benefits of 3,000 former CTNA employees and their spouses.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs claimed that the CTNA decision to reduce the former employees’ health benefits resulted in couples not old enough to qualify for subsidised ‘Medicare’ health care (the minimum age for eligibility is 65) paying as much as US$1,000 a month for insurance. Many former employees were reportedly unable to afford these costs and thus were compelled to drop their healthcare cover.

USW, Carlyle Set New Contract, Goodyear Sale to Proceed

(Akron/Tire Review) The United Steelworkers and the Carlyle Group have reached agreement on a new five-year contract covering the four engineered products plants Carlyle is planning to acquire from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The contract paves the way for completion of the sale agreement between Goodyear and the investment group. The contract covers some 1,600 workers at plants in St. Marys, Ohio; Lincoln, Nebraska; Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; and Marysville, Ohio.

Goodyear, USW Locals Still Negotiating

(Akron/Tire Review – Topeka Capital-Journal) Six months after Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and the United Steelworkers reached a national labour agreement, negotiations continue on a local supplemental contract that has implications for employees’ work and vacation rules.”Everybody in our membership thought this would be an easy deal, but it’s proved harder,” said Glenn Griffith, vice president of Local 307.

Griffith said the national deal, or “master agreement,” sets the tone for such big-ticket items as wages and benefits, but it’s up to local negotiators to work out the smaller points, like work rules and how overtime and vacation can be scheduled. He said the union has been meeting with Goodyear since at least April.

Amy Brei, a Goodyear corporate spokeswoman, said some of the other 11 plants across the country have ratified their local agreements. She couldn’t provide numbers.

National Sale Could Net Revie £50 million

National Tyres boss, Alan Revie could gain as much as £50 million from the sale of the well-known tyre retail chain. When questioned yesterday about reports that the 205 branch strong network was up for sale, the chairman and chief executive failed to give any clear indication that this was not the case. According to reports, the fact that Revie is majority shareholder ensures that he will walk away with the lion’s share of any sales agreement.

Kumho Signs Manchester United Sponsorship Deal

Kumho Tire announced on July 12 that it has signed a sponsorship deal with Manchester United. The four-year deal, settled for an undisclosed sum, will see Kumho obtain the rights to include the football team’s logo and images of the players in its advertisements. Company CEO Oh Se-chul said the tyremaker expects the sponsorship agreement will help promote their international image.

The tyremaker is already involved with the well-known football club, and announced in April that Manchester United would participate in a Kumho sponsored friendly match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on July 20. Kumho said it plans to hold a joint press conference with Manchester United in Seoul on July 19.
