Pirelli to Sponsor ANCRO and MSA Gravel Rally

Pirelli Tyres will be title sponsor of ANCRO and the next MSA Gravel Rally Championship. As a result of the agreement, the series will be renamed the Pirelli MSA National Gravel Rally Championship. “In 2008 we will introduce a control tyre to all cars running within the Group N category. In line with the developments we have been working on in 2007 we hope to introduce our eco-tyre to all categories in 2009,” commented Martin Pallot Motorsport & Events Manager, Pirelli Tyres Ltd.

New Pirelli Deal to Benefit Romanian UHP Tyre Plant Town

It is nine months since Pirelli opened its UHP tyre manufacturing facility in the Romanian town of Slatina, and the Italian company’s commitment to the community has been reflected in a program of social initiatives. The latest of these is the signing of an agreement on December 10 between the tyremaker and Niguarda Cà Granda Hospital of Milan and the Hospital of Slatina to provide for the continuing education of Romanian medical and nursing personnel at the Milan hospital. In addition, Pirelli will donate modern hospital equipment to the Slatina hospital for diagnostics and emergency surgery.

WTO Rules Brazil Must Allow Retread Imports

A World Trade Organization appeals panel ruled on December 3 that Brazil did violate international commerce rules by restricting importation of retreaded tyres from Europe. Brazil claimed that the European Union was dumping millions of used tyres on its market, creating a greater risk of disease and environmental damage as the country had no means to effectively recycle the used tyres. Because Brazil allows such imports from South American countries, the WTO ruled that Brazil’s ban on the retreaded tyres was, in fact, as restriction on international trade.

MercedesService Cardholders Now Protected by Conti Tyre Service

An agreement made with Continental means that MercedesService Card customers can now utilise the ContiBreakdownService, the tyre service provided in the UK and 23 other countries by ContiEuroService. The service operates around the clock, 365 days a year, and enables customers to obtain help simply through calling the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Centre – the centre will in turn notify the respective national ContiEuroService organisation, thus eliminating any potential language barriers. Costs for the service are reported to be fully transparent, with invoicing according to fixed prices, thus MercedesService Card customers are spared any unpleasant surprises.

New Trade Deal With China May Impact Tyres

(Tire Review/Akron) In a new trade deal, China will eliminate “improper” trade subsidies it was allegedly using to prop up profitable trade with the US, to the detriment of local and foreign companies. The deal was announced earlier this week by US Trade Representative Susan Schwab, who called it a major breakthrough.

In the deal, China will eliminate WTO-illegal tax breaks that aided Chinese companies exporting to the US and other countries, and end taxes and tariffs that harmed reciprocal trade with China. There was no immediate word how the agreement will impact the import or export of tyres and tyre-related products.

Kirkby Secures ‘Giant’ OE Deal

Kirkby Tyres & Wheels has secured a large scale OE contract to supply to OTR tyres to a particularly UK-based manufacturer. The deal will see the Liverpool-based wholesaler counter EM tyre shortage issues by supplying between 5000 and 7000 tyres a year, including certain ‘giant’ sizes. Speaking to Tyres & Accessories after giving a company statement on the Michelin/Double Coin dispute, Kirkby managing director, Dave Dorrity, said the agreement would be a “multi-million pound” contract.

Pirelli Negotiating Share Buyback

(Tire Review) Company chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera confirmed that Pirelli SpA is in talks to repurchase a 39 per cent stake in its tyre unit. Tronchetti Provera made the statement in Shanghai on November 30, where Pirelli launched its 2008 Pirelli Calendar. Pirelli sold the 39 per cent stake in Pirelli Tyre to a group of banks in July 2006 for 740 million euros. The original plan was to take that share public with an IPO. “We are very confident that there will be an agreement,” Tronchetti Provera told media in Shanghai, but he added that negotiations could take months.

Dunlop Nigeria to Borrow Funds for Modernisation

The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) Bank for Investment and Development has granted Dunlop Nigeria PLC a loan of US$8 million. The company was scheduled to sign a loan agreement at the ECOWAS Commission in the Nigerian capital city Abuja on November 23.

“The loan will enable Dunlop to partially finance the modernisation of some existing installations in its factory and procure new moulds for the manufacture of a greater range of products to meet the needs of the local market,” read a statement released by ECOWAS, a regional grouping comprised of 15 African member nations. Dunlop Nigeria will repay the loan over a five-year period.

Trelleborg to Divest Coventry Facility

Trelleborg disclosed its intention to close the company’s operations in West Thurrock at its Capital Markets Day in November 2006, and now, a year later, Trelleborg has announced it has entered an agreement in principal to divest its operations in Coventry, which belong to Trelleborg Automotive UK. Trelleborg states that the Coventry operations will be taken over by the company’s management.

This decision comes as part of Trelleborg’s ‘strategic and operational action program’ within the Trelleborg Automotive business area, and Roger Johansson, Business Area president of Trelleborg Automotive, commented: “This operation is not part of Trelleborg’s core business, it has few synergies with our remaining activities and is limited in size. The transaction will enable us to further focus our automotive operations, at the same time as the business conducted in Coventry will now have an opportunity to grow within its particular area.”

Hayes Lemmerz to Sell Brake Component Facilities

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc. announced on November 9 that it has entered into a definitive agreement for the sale of its automotive brake component facilities located in Michigan, USA and Monterrey, Mexico for approximately US$58 million in cash. The sale is expected to be completed on November 9, 2007, however the company has not initially disclosed the identity of the purchasing company.

The Hayes Lemmerz brake component operation specialises in supplying the North American automotive market with rotors and drums used in foundation braking systems.

Hankook Signs Deal with ALMS Team

(Akron/Tire Review) Hankook Tire Co. has signed a sponsorship and supply agreement with Corsa Motorsports, which will compete in the 2008 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in the GT2 Class. “For Hankook, this is about showcasing our technology on the premier stage of road racing,” said Bill Bainbridge, director of brand communication for Hankook Tire America Corp. “We are as devoted to winning on race day as Corsa Motorsports.”

“Our agreement with Hankook puts us back in the game with a partner who is fully committed to putting the most competitive car out there,” said Steve Pruitt, who heads Corsa Motorsports. “We have some of the most technologically advanced cars on the track; we want to transfer that technology to the asphalt to put us in the best position to make it to Le Mans.”

Goodyear Elects to End Tyre Production at Tyler Plant

On October 30 Goodyear announced its intention to end tyre production at its Tyler facility in the US state of Texas, ending months of speculation over the plant’s fate upon expiry of the one-year stay of execution granted by the signing of the United Steelworkers’ three-year master contract in December 2006.

Goodyear announced that production will end in January, the exact date falling some time in the first fortnight of the year. The end of tyre production will be accompanied by the loss of more than 600 of the plant’s 740 hourly jobs, the company added.

The tyremaker issued the USW a Worker Adjustment Relocation Notice (WARN) Act notification on the afternoon of October 30. By law a company must issue a WARN Act notification 60 days prior to beginning redundancies that will affect more than one-third of the workforce.

Kraiburg and Vacu-Lug Continue Ongoing Relationship

Kraiburg and Vacu-Lug have reaffirmed their long running partnership with agreement to expand their business relationship. Currently Vacu-Lug, Europe’s largest independent retreader, sources over 70 per cent of its compound requirements from Kraiburg. “Our customers are more than satisfied with the quality of Kraiburg compounds for the hot cure process,” said Vacu-Lug managing director, Tim Hercock. “We are delighted that we will be able to offer this quality level also in the future.”

Dwory Supplying Polish Rubber to Michelin

On 5 October 2007 Dwory S.A. signed a licence agreement with Michelin for poly-butadiene rubber production technology. At the same time the two companies signed a trade contract supplying the rubber to Michelin for a minimum period of 7 years from the start of production. The value of the trade contract is estimated to be over £200 million.

Under the agreement some of Dwory’s production is going to be supplied directly to Michelin plants. The rest is to be sold by Dwory on the market under its own brand. The completion of the project is also expected to result in better utilization of the company’s general infrastructure and lead to further reductions in fixed costs.

Micheldever Chooses Hofmann Megaplan

Micheldever Tyres have chosen Hofmann Megaplan as a preferred equipment supplier following an “extensive evaluation of their products.” Micheldever, which operates a number of retail sites under the Micheldever and Pro-Tyre banners, took the decision to review their equipment supply source and as such reportedly trialled machines from a number of manufacturers. Prior to the news Micheldever’s record breaking Micheldever Station retail outlet ran an exclusive supply agreement with Snap-On.

According to company representatives, Hofmann Megaplan equipment, in particular the megamount 701XL tyre changer, performed to their complete satisfaction and received positive reviews from those who put the machines through their paces.
