Goodyear extends NASCAR till 2017

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and NASCAR have jointly announced that they have extended their exclusive tyre supply agreement for NASCAR’s top three racing series for the next five years.

The agreement, which extends through the 2017 season, renews Goodyear as the “Exclusive Tire Supplier” of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Goodyear has had an uninterrupted commitment to NASCAR since becoming a race tyre supplier in the 1950s.

Conti begins technology partnership with Brabus

Safer sporty driving through better synchronisation between tyre and vehicle – this is the aim of a new technology partnership agreement between tyre maker Continental and well-known German vehicle tuner Brabus. The two companies formalised their collaboration at the recent IAA motor show in Frankfurt, with Nikolai Setzer, head of Continental’s Tires division, and Brabus CEO and founder Prof. Bodo Buschmann signing the deal.

Bridgestone plea bargain in marine hose case

Bridgestone Corp. has entered into a plea agreement regarding its involvement with a bid-rigging scheme in the US and bribery charges in Latin America. According to Tire Review, under the plea agreement, Bridgestone has pleaded guilty to antitrust conspiracy charges and a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. As a result, the company will pay a $28 million fine, which is said was “a significant reduction from the applicable sentencing guidelines due to Bridgestone’s cooperation and remediation efforts.”

Cessna expands Michelin OEM agreement

In August 2010, Michelin signed a five-year tyre supply agreement with Cessna covering supply to the US aircraft manufacturer’s business jet range. The tyre maker now reports this agreement has been expanded to include supplying tyres for piston-engine aircraft. Under this enlarged agreement, Michelin tyres are now fitted on nearly all Cessna piston aircraft and most Citation business jets.

Pirelli “proud to fully support” FOTA Fans Forum at Italian GP

Pirelli welcomed more than 200 fans to its Milan headquarters on Wednesday for the Formula One Teams Association Fans Forum event prior to the Italian Grand Prix this weekend. Formula One personalities Stefano Domenicali, Nico Rosberg and Jarno Trulli, as well as Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery, were the special guests, along with engineers Nicolo Petrucci (head of aerodynamics, Toro Rosso) and Giampaolo Dall’Ara (race engineer, Sauber). Hembery said the ability to “connect with the public” is “vital” in making the sport “more relevant and accessible than ever,” a feature of the current F1 philosophy that the company has maintained is influential in its decision to supply its tyres.

Michelin signs tyre, service supply agreement with US truck service chain

Ambest Service Centers, a 68-outlet chain of truck repair and facilities in the US, has signed a deal with Michelin Americas Truck Tires to stock the tyre maker’s range of Michelin and BFGoodrich brand products and for Michelin to offer tyre and emergency road service at many Ambest locations.

Triangle to establish US research, sales centres

Today the Triangle Group will officially launch its new US research, development and sales company. The Shandong province, China-based company then intends to begin its activities in North America with the establishment of a research and development centre in Akron, Ohio; this will be followed by sales offices. Triangle has already hired its first local employee and intends to start its US operations with 30 new local employees – 10 in research and development and 20 in sales. The number of employees is expected to grow as Triangle further establishes its North American operation.

Bosch to acquire Unipoint Group

The Bosch Group’s Automotive Aftermarket division is set to acquire the Unipoint Group and its affiliated Unipoint and NSA brands for an undisclosed sum. An agreement confirming the deal between Bosch and the Unipoint Group, which produces starters, alternators, temperature control parts and wiper blades for the aftermarket, was signed on August 9.

Partnership signed to market rapid-charge battery technology

A licensing agreement signed between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and US firm Xerion Advanced Battery Corp. is expected to exploit a technology said to potentially enable the charging of electric vehicle batteries within minutes. Under the terms of the agreement, announced on July 19, Xerion has been granted the exclusive right to bring the University’s ‘StructurePore’ battery-charging technology to market.

No Russian Cup sponsorship – Bridgestone to “explore opportunities” in Russia

An announcement was made on July 15 that Bridgestone would serve as title sponsor to the Russian Football Union’s (RFU) Russian Cup during the 2011-12 season. However Bridgestone reported on July 19 that on the same day as this first announcement was made, the RFU revealed its selection of a company other than Bridgestone as the event’s title sponsor.

Keyuan notified of NASDAQ delisting

Despite being informed that Keyuan Petrochemicals’ stock may be delisted from the NASDAQ, company chairman and CEO Chungfeng Tao states demand for its products “remains strong”. The Chinese petrochemical product manufacturer disclosed on July 11 that it received a letter from the NASDAQ regarding a delisting of its stock based on a review of the company and pursuant to NASDAQ Listing Rule 5101 and Listing Rule 5250 (c)(1). Keyuan says it has requested a hearing to appeal this decision and adds that its management is “working diligently with all relevant authorities to regain compliance with its regulatory requirements.”

Kwik Fit agrees company-wide pay settlement with Unite

Kwik Fit has announced a 2011 banded pay settlement for 4,400 employees in its 676 UK centres. The settlement provides an increase of 3 per cent for fitting staff on the standard company salary for their grade, affecting the majority of the workforce. All other staff, including managers, supervisors, MOT testers and service technicians, will receive a 2 per cent increase. Kwik Fit said the agreement was reached after amicable discussions with the trade union Unite. The pay increase will be backdated to 1 January 2011.

Keyuan, Hangzhou Zhongce to collaborate on SSBR development

Ningbo, China-based petrochemical manufacturer Keyuan Petrochemicals reports entering into an agreement with the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company to jointly develop commercial applications for Solution Polymerisation Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SSBR). The formal agreement was signed on June 28 and under its terms researchers from both companies will work together on SSBR projects over the coming few years. Both firms will share the rights to products and technologies developed from this cooperation. Keyuan Petrochemicals states that any successfully developed SSBR will be manufactured within the Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) facility it is currently building. This Ningbo, Zhejiang Province plant is expected to be complete at the end of 2011.

Indian synthetic rubber JV established

The Indian Oil Corporation has entered a joint-venture agreement with Taiwan’s TSRC Corporation and Japan’s Corporation to set up a synthetic rubber factory in India. According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, the three companies will hold respective 50, 30 and 20 per cent stakes in a joint-venture factory that is planned to produce 200,000 tonnes of synthetic rubber a year for the tyre industry.

Legal gag sought to silence former Goodyear employee

Goodyear Tire & Rubber is reported to have filed a suit against Continental Tire the Americas and aims to block Continental, via court order, from hiring one of its former managers. According to US industry publication Tire Review, Goodyear fears the former facility manager will take the company’s trade secrets with him and share them with Continental. The suit has been lodged with the United States District Court in the Northern District of Ohio.
