An Oldham based company specialising in the manufacture of bespoke shredding machinery has recently announced plans to relaunch its business. Formerly WSDE, the company not only has the new name of Shredding & Recycling Ltd but also a new corporate identity. The company provides a range of shredding machinery from single turnkey solutions to high volume standard applications capable of shredding and processing a multitude of waste materials.
In an age in which it seems people move jobs on a whim, County Tyres reports that some of its employees have achieved up to four decades of dedication this year. County Tyre Group held it’s Long Service Awards on the 24th October at the County Show Ground in Bristol, showing recognition for some remarkable employees. Nine people have reached the timely milestone of 25 years service, whilst one truly dedicated employee, Alan Clark, is celebrating his 40th year of service.
TRIB managing director, Harvey Brodsky, has written an open letter to BMW North America’s management after remarks against retreads were published in the BMW owners manual. According to TRIB, in the Tire Replacement section, Page 131 of the BMW Owners Manual, BMW wrote: “BMW advises against using retreaded tyres, since driving safety may be impaired. This is due to the possible variations in casing structures and, in some cases to their extreme age, which can lead to a decrease in their durability.” “We ask that this statement be removed from future printings because it is simply not true. The failure rate of retreaded tyres parallels that of the best new tyres and there is ample evidence to back up this statement,” Brodsky replied in his letter. TRIB sent a copy of the letter to all its members.
“As we reach that time of year to put down your sun-block and reach for the brollies and snow shovels, its also time to think about fitting your vehicle with some winter retread tyres,” according to Colway retreads. The UK’s leading manufacturer retreaded passenger tyres, has an significant range of passenger, van and light truck winter tyres, with over 80 different sizes, using five different tread patterns.
Think you would help a woman driver change her tyre on the side of the road? Most men certainly think they are the chivalrous kind, but research conducted by Continental Tyres suggests that even more drive past.
Over half (55 per cent) of the British men questioned claimed they would stop to help a woman changing a tyre by the side of the road. But roadside tests conducted by Conti in five cities in England and Wales revealed that, in the actual event, 97 per cent drove by oblivious. And ladies, don’t even think of getting a puncture in Bristol – not a single passing motorist stopped to offer help. Geordies were found to be far more likely to rise – or crouch – to the challenge.
François Michelin, Michelin managing partner from 1955 to 1999, is 80 today. The grandson of the global tyre manufacturer’s founder, Edouard Michelin (who died in 1940 at the age of 81), François Michelin is also the father of another former managing partner, Edouard Michelin, who died in an accident at the age of 42 on 26 May.
For decades François Michelin led the company with his cousin François Rollier, who died in 1992 at the age of 77. Rollier’s son, who had been Edouard Michelin’s co-managing partner, Michel Rollier (61), recently took over leadership of the company as sole managing partner. In the 1998 Michelin Charter François Michelin is quoted as saying: “Each woman and each man is singular and irreplaceable“ (“Chaque homme est unique et irreplaceable“). Today nothing has to be added to this truth.
A study carried out by Continental revealed that 25 per cent of motorists in Germany “frequently” drive faster than the legal speed limit. However, when it comes to assessing other motorists’ behaviour, 92 per cent believed that other motorists speed “often, very often, or always.” It will probably come as little surprise that younger drivers are the worst offenders, with almost half of the 18-25 age group exceeding speed limits.
(Akron/Tire Review) Ford Motor Co plans to ask NHTSA to tell US car owners to change their tyres after six years of service – regardless of their condition. Ford and DaimlerChrysler already advise owners of their vehicles to discard tyres after six years through their respective vehicle owner’s manuals. Ford claims its testing and research shows that the effects of aging on tyre reliability increases significantly after six years.
(Akron/Tire Review) The $15 billion US replacement tyre market has grown 34 per cent since 1999, according to a new study from Research and Markets. Volume sales benefit from an automobile fleet that is larger and older than any in US history. However, the real growth in the market increased in what consumers spend per tyre, with average price per tyre rising from $59 in 1999 to $76 in 2005.
(Akron/Tire Review) In an unusual split from its Big 3 brethren, General Motors did not take the opportunity to stand with Ford and DaimlerChrysler on the subject of tyre aging. GM, in a statement issued earlier this week, said it would not endorse the other automakers’ position that tyres six years old or older should be replaced.
Hofmann Megaplan has introduced the new ‘Airgo-Lift’ a wheel lifter for assisting tyre technicians with heavy wheel assemblies.
Operated by air the machine fits under the shaft of a balancer and can raise wheels up to 70kg in weight. It can also move the wheel horizontally over the shaft to allow easy location of studs when flange plate mounting.
John DeLorean, who created a legendary car of the same name in Belfast in 1972, died at the age of 80 in Los Angeles last weekend. Mr DeLorean’s DMC 12 sports car played a central role in the “Back To The Future” film series, where it gained worldwide attention. DeLorean went bankrupt in the beginning of the 80s, since that time French company Montupet has produced 800,000 aluminum cast wheels each year for OE customers in the former Belfast DeLorean plant.
Congratulations to Chris Lee who, at the age of 23, is one of National Tyres and Autocentre’s youngest branch managers and who has been named as 2004 Branch Manager of the Year, winning a brand new car in the process.
Chris Lee only joined National three and a half years ago as a fitter, but his managerial skills were quickly spotted and after two years he was promoted to manager.
At the end of January point S, Germany’s largest cooperative, held its second annual meeting since it merged with competing buying group, VRG. Although more than two years have passed since the merger, the meeting revealed that the dust hasn’t settled yet, and, following a number of management changes, there is still plenty of strong feeling on the subject. Nevertheless, nearly 750 participants travelled to Leipzig’s Congress Center for the two-day meeting and heard about the organisation’s “courage for the future.”
