On 13 April TP Industrial Holding – a company controlled by CNRC (the tyre division of ChemChina) – confirmed that agreements have been signed with CNRC, Aeolus and High Grade (HK) Investment Management Limited for the full integration of its controlled Industrial activities with the other assets of the sector belonging to CNRC, including Aeolus and Guilin Beili. The formal finalization of this integration is expected by the end of the year, subject to the approval by the relevant authorities, with the contribution into Aeolus of the 52 per cent stake held in Prometeon Tyre Group (formerly Pirelli Industrial).
In parallel with presenting its full-year 2016 results, Pirelli has revealed further details of its complex ownership structure and how it is splitting its consumer and industrial tyre business into two separate entities.
The latest news is that, as of March 2017, TP Industrial holding (which owns the newly renamed PTG, which was called Pirelli industrial until recently – more on that later) has been separated out from Pirelli’s consumer tyre business. In practice this means the assignment of TP Industrial holding to Marco Polo, Pirelli’s sole shareholder. According to Pirelli, the assignment will “ensure that Pirelli and TP Industrial can pursue their own independent paths to growth and independently developed strategies”.

On 19 October the board of directors of Pirelli & C. S.p.A. met in Milan to discuss the integration of Pirelli Industrial and Aeolus, along with plans for a 2018 IPO, a year earlier than expected.
As a result of the meeting the board, approved the firm’s 2016-2018 industrial plan, including its vision up to 2020 for Pirelli consumer.
Together with local partner Intergomma, Aeolus Tyre has opened its very first flagship retail outlet in Italy. The tyre maker states that the 4,500 square metre site in Livorno offers customers an “innovative sales and service centre that leaves nothing to be desired.” The outlet opened late last month and caters to both car and commercial vehicle users.
Aeolus is set to showcase the first tyres in its new NEO series, while also presenting a range of Transace tyres for light commercial vehicles and vans at IAA 2016. Both Aeolus and Heuver have recently celebrated their 50th anniversaries and for over a decade, they have worked together to claim an important place in the European truck and trailer sector. But, partly due to the takeover of Pirelli, this position will no doubt be reinforced in the coming years.
Say Pirelli and the first things you think of are high performance cars and stylish marketing. However, Pirelli’s truck tyre of the business has received renewed attention in recent years, especially in light of last year’s takeover of Pirelli by ChemChina. A key part of that acquisition was based on the belief that, while Pirelli is the undisputed technology leader of that relationship (especially in terms of car tyres), ChemChina’s group of companies is known to be at its strongest in the commercial vehicle or “industrial” side of things. Since then, there have been renewed efforts to develop Pirelli truck tyre position in the UK, Europe and globally – a position that is likely to be augmented by addition production capacity (via the ChemChina group companies) in China as well as their brands. Set against this backdrop, Pirelli recently highlighted its partnerships with well-known truck fleets – notably Travis Perkins group here in the UK, a company it has supplied for 20 years.
Italy’s Pirelli & C. SpA has announced net sales of €3.0 billion during the six months to 30 June 2016. This is 6.6 per cent lower than the net sales achieved by the Pirelli Group in the first half of last year, yet the company says the result represents a year-on-year organic growth of 5.9 per cent (with the same perimeter and net of an 8.8 per cent negative foreign exchange effect). Sales within Pirelli’s Consumer business (car, light commercial and motorcycle tyres) amounted to €2.5 billion, including €1.6 billion of premium products, while Industrial business sales totaled €497.3 million.
Two new Aeolus winter tyres were unveiled at last month’s Reifen 2016 show, the SnowAce2 for the standard segment and SnowACE2 HP for the high performance segment. The pair are the successor tyres to the SnowACE AW02 und AW03.
As senior management from Aeolus Tyre disclosed during a Reifen 2016 press conference, the Chinese tyre maker will soon be part of the world’s fourth-largest industrial tyre manufacturing company. This new tyre firm, which has yet to be named, will exist under the umbrella of state-owned concern ChemChina. In addition to Aeolus Tyre, the company will be comprised of Pirelli, which ChemChina acquired last year, and the Italian tyre maker’s new sister companies, Qingdao Yellow Sea Rubber and Double Happiness.
Heuver Tyrewholesale reports that the four exhibition days at Reifen 2016 were a “great success” for the company. The Netherlands-based wholesaler placed a strong focus on Aeolus and Barkley at the show – Barkley, still a relatively new brand for Heuver and a Reifen newcomer, gained its own show stand, while the Aeolus tyre range was represented in a large, open exhibition space shared with Heuver.
Pirelli has launched its new tyre line for commercial vehicles, the R:01 Triathlon, at Reifen 2016. Designed as third generation products, the tyres provide performance characteristics not only to replace the existing R:01 II, but also to overlap the winter W:01 and long-haul H:01 ranges. While the new tyres are “not designed to replace” Pirelli’s specialist models, the manufacturer’s CEO Europe, Renato Zilli told Tyrepress that the R:01 Triathlon range represents its recognition of users’ “variable needs” and the evolution of European goods transportation; in 2010 the ratio between regional, long-haul and winter applications was 76:20:4, while in 2015 this has changed to 81:15:4. Commercial tyres featuring all-round performance are naturally attractive to dealers as an aftermarket solution, but European fleets also require adaptability between the more popular regional applications and long-haul routes, taking in different climates.

A pair of prototype truck tyres displayed by Aeolus Tyre at Reifen 2016 this week show the direction the Chinese tyre maker (and new Pirelli sister company) will take over the next few years. The two tyres are the Neo Allroads S (ASR61) steer axle tyre and Neo Fuel T+ (ATL67) trailer tyre.
Starting 1 June 2016, Aeolus Tyre will introduce a pan-European breakdown service for truck fleets and tyre specialists. The new Aeolus Breakdown Service will be serviced by Belgium-based international breakdown specialist Profile Euroservice; fleets using the Aeolus Breakdown Service will be supported by the more than 7,600 registered truck tyre specialists that partner with Euroservice in 33 European countries.
May 2016’s Reifen show coincides with Heuver’s 50th anniversary; a conjunction that will enable the international wholesaler to mark this significant date in style. Heuver will thus highlight its anniversary over the course of the week from its Hall 2 stand (E42), from which it will also be showcasing Aeolus products, for which it is the exclusive distributor in eight European countries – a fact the company describes as “the icing on the cake.” Heuver added that its many brands for international markets will be represented by account managers from all countries on its stand.
