Dunlop OE on North American Mazda6

Last week Bridgestone reported its Turanza T001 would be fitted to the new Mazda6 in markets outside of North America. Dunlop Tires in the US has also announced the original equipment supply of its tyres to the Mazda6. The new ‘2014’ model (which despite its name will go on sale early next year) will come equipped with the Dunlop SP Sport 5000 in size P225/45R19. Dunlop is claiming exclusive fitment with this size, which indicates the supply deal covers the North American market only.

Stapleton’s marks 75th anniversary

75 years after the company’s foundation, Stapleton’s, its suppliers and its partners are all celebrating three quarters of a century in business.

It’s hard to imagine what Sidney Stapleton would make of the company that bears his name 75 years on from the September day in 1937 when he first incorporated the firm and opened his premises at 195 High Street, Watford. By the end of the Second World War in 1945, the company had not only survived but expanded with the opening of a new depot in nearby Hitchin – a move that brought the weekly wage bill to a total of £20.

Goodyear Dunlop implementing US moto division changes

Changes to Goodyear Dunlop Tires North America’s motorcycle division are scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2013. The company has announced that certain of its administrative functions will relocate from Buffalo, New York to Goodyear’s headquarters in Akron, Ohio. These include non-field sales positions, marketing, customer service, supply chain and non-factory related human resources. Goodyear Dunlop says the move will allow the business to enhance its customer service while also adding resources to the motorcycle division. Dunlop’s Research and Development department will remain in Buffalo.

Goodyear label training surpasses the 1000 mark

Goodyear Dunlop’s Birmingham-based training team reports that it has trained over 1000 wholesalers and key stakeholders on the subject of tyre labelling legislation. According to the company, the training was set up in a bid to educate key stakeholders about the tyre label and what it means for their business. It involved a two hour interactive session, looking at the three criteria of the label in detail and answering any questions the dealers posed.

Vision West Nottinghamshire College tour Dunlop Motorsport factory

Dunlop has hosted a visit by Vision West Nottinghamshire college students at its Dunlop Motorsport factory in Birmingham. The 11 motorcycle students, aged over 18, were given a tour of the facilities courtesy of Dunlop employees.

Time honours Goodyear Air Maintenance Technology as 2012 'Best Invention'

The USA's Time Magazine has awarded The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) with the title of one of its "Best Inventions of the Year 2012”. AMT is designed to help drivers maintain optimal tyre pressure, helping to increase the longevity of the tread and the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. All of AMT's components, including a miniaturised pump, will be fully contained within the tyre. Time's technology editors listed AMT alongside the Tesla Model S electric car amongst others as one the year’s 25 “most important innovations.”

Goodyear Dunlop launches Truckforce Twitter feed

Goodyear Dunlop’s truck tyre service and breakdown network, TruckForce has launched a Twitter feed, coinciding with the full introduction of EU tyre labelling legislation. Goodyear Dunlop said the feed will initially focus on providing information relating to commercial vehicle tyre labels, while also including relevant industry and Goodyear Dunlop news and advice on topics such as winter driving and improving fuel efficiency.

Goodyear to present at Goldman Sachs Industrials Conference

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced that it will webcast its presentation at the 2012 Goldman Sachs Industrials Conference in Boston on November 13. During the presentation Darren R Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer, will provide a business overview and discuss the company’s strategies.

‘Tyre art’ tour marks new EU legislation

So-called “tyre artist” Ian Cook drove across Europe recently to produce a large artwork to mark the formal introduction of the EU Tyre Label on 1 November, commissioned by tyre maker Goodyear. The British artist, who paints using tyres and radio-controlled toy cars, visited nine European countries in just four days to create the unique piece.

Goodyear poll shows "shocking" ignorance about tyres

A new study has revealed that a shocking number of motorists still have a poor knowledge of tyres, which is putting lives at risk. The poll of 2,000 motorists commissioned by tyre manufacturer Goodyear revealed that over half of those surveyed didn't know that the legal limit for tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, 70 per cent said they didn't check their tyre pressure at least once a month and 13 per cent thought that stopping distances decreased in the wet weather. Furthermore checks on a total of 30,000 vehicles in 2012 showed that 53 per cent of the tyres that came off these vehicles were below the legal tread depth; a real concern for safety campaigners.

Sailun Tyres has announced details of a string of new appointments to its European sales team. The first was the appointment of Martin Lumb as new business development manager, Europe & Middle East. Lumb joins the Sailun team from 1 November 2012 having previously worked for Infinity and Goodyear.

Goodyear sales/volumes down in third quarter results

At the close of last week, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company reported results for the third quarter of 2012 showing improved North American operating of US$130 million (up 67 per cent year-on-year), but also significant volume decline (down 12 per cent year-on-year).

Goodyear works to improve young driver safety

Goodyear and the European Driving Schools Association (EFA) have announced a joint collaboration, to increase awareness for safe driving among young drivers and address this in the training for youngsters on the road. EFA represents the interest of 25 driving school associations from 24 European countries.

Oudshoorn to leave Apollo Vredestein

Rob Oudshoorn, CEO Apollo Vredestein BV, is to leave the company on 31 December 2012 after 18 years as CEO. Luis Ceneviz, currently CEO of Apollo Tyres South Africa has been named as his “intended successor”. According to the company, Oudshoorn will be joining the executive board of the Dutch Company Pon Holdings. Apollo representatives said they wish him “all the best in his new endeavour,” in a statement announcing his departure.

Cooper appoints marketing VP

Cooper Tire has appointed Michael Simon to the post of Vice President – Strategic Marketing and Planning, North America Tire Operations. With a career in the automotive sector that spans nearly three decades, Simon spent 20 years with Goodyear, starting as a new college graduate in 1985, and through a number of increasingly responsible positions. Following Goodyear, Simon joined Eaton Corp. as Director of Sales, Performance Products and Aftermarket Division, where he focused on the $2 billion Automotive Group's non-traditional growth segments.
