The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been named a recipient of the 2016 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the nation’s highest honour given to employers for exceptional support of guard and reserve employees. Florin Popescu has been appointed director of sales for Goodyear Dunlop’s business in Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. He brings over a decade of experience at Goodyear Dunlop Tires Romania into his new role; Popescu joined the company as an area sales manager in October 2003, and served as truck tyre manager and commercial tyre manager for the Romanian and Bulgarian markets before being appointed commercial tyre manager for Romania, Bulgaria and Moldavia in January 2014.
At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Renault lifted the wraps on the fourth generation of its Scénic multi-purpose vehicle. The new model is equipped across the range with 20-inch rims as standard, a bold choice for a mass market car yet a size exterior designer Jérémie Sommer pushed, claiming the larger diameter rims form a “fundamental part” of the Scénic’s “perfectly-balanced silhouette and pleasing proportions.” The tyre size of choice for the new Renault is 195/55 R20, and Goodyear will act as exclusive all-season tyre supplier. The tyre maker will also deliver summer tyres for certain models.
Over 1000 Police fleet managers engaged with Goodyear Dunlop at the annual National Association of Police Fleet Managers Conference (NAPFM) earlier this month. The NAPFM conference is now in its 43rd year and is one of the largest emergency service fleet events in Europe.
Leading tyre manufacturers have begun offering their responses to the UK electorate’s decision to leave the EU. Describing the trajectory of the Brexit vote as “very worrying”, Continental AG CEO Dr Elmer Degenhart commented: “Taking the pan-European context into account the vote is very worrying. ‘Everyone on his own’ does not fit the idea behind the formation of the EU and cannot be the answer to the challenges of the global competition with America and Asia.”
However, Degenhart does not expect big problems for Continental itself: “The direct economic impact on Continental is expected to be limited because currently we generate less than 3 per cent of our sales in the UK and expect to be successful in this market also in the future.”
Goodyear’s all-season Vector 4Seasons Generation-2 tyre has been awarded the test win in German automotive magazine Gute Fahrt. Receiving high wet and dry grip marks, the tyre was the only tested model to claim the magazine’s “Sehr Gut-“ (Very Good-) ranking. As of April 2016, the tyre’s fitment portfolio has been extended to SUV sizes, as the manufacturer seeks to harness demand for all-season products in the quickest growing market segment.
A coroner has connected the death of a former worker at Goodyear’s Wolverhampton factory to years of employment in tyre production. Fred Spruce died in November 2015, just weeks after he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. His 71-year-old widow Valerie has now instructed industrial disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate how this happened.

An upgrade to Goodyear’s Lawton facility in Oklahoma, USA will increase its capability to produce consumer tyres in sizes up to and including 24-inch fitments. Goodyear Tire & Rubber is launching a new range of environmentally friendly three-wheel vehicles in Europe. The range includes two models, the Goodyear e-Go 1 and Goodyear e-Go 2. Both will go on sale at selected car and motorcycle dealers from September 2016.

The tyre manufacturer points out the effect that recent truck tyre developments have had on significantly reducing CO2 emissions made by commercial vehicles. It also highlights the effectiveness of the EU tyre label in achieving CO2 reduction across the transport industry.
