This weekend Jarama in Spain hosted the penultimate racing weekend in the truck-racing calendar. While new Goodyear tyres dominate in the Super Race class, in the smaller, Truck Race class both the first and second place drivers had retreads fitted to their axles. For the two most successful drivers at this meeting, Rigdon retreads were the chosen products.
Englishman Stuart Oliver leads the championship with 21 points, ahead of Germany’s Lutz Bernau. The two competitors are the only two drivers that have a chance of becoming the new European Champion at the final race weekend in Le Mans.
Either retreads or new tyres are allowed on the drive axle. On the steering axle retreads are prohibited.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced that Pierre E Cohade, formerly executive vice president of worldwide water and beverage company, Groupe Danone, will become president of Goodyear’s Asia-Pacific region.
JP Morgan has downgraded Goodyear Tire & Rubber from “overweight” to “neutral.”
Analysts claim that the downgrade is based on “valuation” and the company’s “less bullish growth prospects in 2H.” So far this quarter the company’s share price has appreciated 18 per cent in absolute terms and this combined with slowing growth rates has brought down the company’s rating. JP Morgan also asserts that Goodyear is unlikely to witness significant gains from its recent price increases.
This year’s Paris Motor Show saw the unveiling of Ferrari’s new F430, the successor to the 360 Modena.
Taking what the company describes as a “brand new approach,” Goodyear commissioned the UK’s first HydraZorbs to mark the launch of its HydraGrip tyre.
The third “EMT-DSST Technical Training” organised by Goodyear-Dunlop in co-operation with Butler was held in Carpi Modena at the beginning of September.
More than 70 independent Goodyear dealers from northern-central Italy attended the training session, which the company believes “met several goals.”
Mr Marco Moretti, Goodyear Italy marketing manager, introduced the features of run-flat tyres, whilst Mr Alberto Tadolini, Butler sales manager, focused upon the technical and practical skills associated with handling EMT and DSST tyres. Practical application of the theoretical session was also put into play with the use of different Butler tyre changers and trainers. The next session will be held on 6-7 October in Nola, Naples.
Goodyear and Dunlop have exhibited a number of new and forthcoming products at the 60th IAA show in Hanover. While they shared exhibition space, the two brands maintained their independent identities and made every effort to affirm the company’s emphasis on economy.
Chinese company Qingdao Doublestar has announced that it is forming a joint venture with Continental in China.
In a statement to the Shenzhen stock exchange the Chinese company is said to have reported that Conti is expected to start negotiations on financial terms and other venture details.

Goodyear is to supply tyres for the new International pickup truck. At nine feet tall, the new vehicle will be two feet taller than the Ford F-350 or Humvee.
The International CXT, Commercial Extreme Truck, will be the world’s largest production pickup truck, according to the company. Every large vehicle needs large tyres in this case 22.5 inch tyres. Chuck Yurkovich, general manager of Goodyear original equipment commercial, said the tyres will provide some “serious traction.” The 14 ply tyres will have to support the seven-ton pickup as well as the six tons of payload it can carry. In the front the truck will use Unisteel G159A radial tyres and G167A high-mileage drive axle tyres in the rear.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co has confirmed that it is planning to plough $30 million into its Kelly-Springfield plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina. .
The 60th International Motor Show (IAA) Commercial Vehicle Show will provide the platform for the launch of a number of new Goodyear and Dunlop products and services. As well as exhibiting a range of tyres for trucks, buses and coaches the Goodyear Dunlop stand will highlight the latest news and services from the Europe-wide TruckForce customer support network.
Goodyear Dunlop says that one of its key goals at the IAA show is to help customers evaluate some of the new tyre-related transport solutions that are available. The company believes its can demonstrate how its products and services can reduce costs. The company recently came up with some new concepts. These include maximising the cargo volume in mega-trailers, reducing the risk of overloading axles and increasing trailer brake life by up to 30 per cent. These configurations are said to produce longer tyre life and better fuel consumption in comparison with previous configurations.
On the ‘software’ side, new systems such as FleetOnlineSolutions and RoadsideAssistanceSolutions were both introduced less than a year ago. These internet-based ‘solutions’ will be demonstrated on the stand to show how they can reduce costs and downtime for the fleet operator and to show the latest improvements that have been introduced to the systems.
Key members of Goodyear Dunlop’s European truck tyre marketing and technical management will be present on the stand to meet customers and media on the press and opening days of the show.
The new products and services will be unveiled on Press Day, 22nd September and include tyres which are unique to the industry. The IAA Commercial Vehicle Show runs from the 23 to 29 September in Hanover.
Goodyear’s Engineered Products and Chemical businesses are to implement rationalisation programmes in order to reduce operational costs, the company has announced.
As a result of the decline in the US tyre market, Deutsche Bank analysts are revising their estimates for tyre manufacturers Goodyear and Cooper. The analysts say they are adjusting their share price estimates for Cooper from $1.85 down to $1.70. Goodyear’s estimates are to be adjusted by a similar amount, from 50 down to 40 cents. According to the analysts, the 1.6 per cent slip in the market during August is a consequence of high fuel prices, which in turn reduces the amount of disposable income available to consumers.
