ATS Euromaster Wins Three-Year Contract with Fraikin

ATS Euromaster has secured one of the largest tyre supply and management contracts awarded in 2006 after winning a three year deal with Fraikin. The contract includes the majority of the 14,000 vehicles under Fraikin’s management, ranging from small vans and rigids to 44 tonne tractor units and trailers. ATS Euromaster secured the contract – estimated to be worth approximately £3 million a year – after carrying out a complete review of Fraikin’s requirements.

Michelin Wins London Central Contract

Michelin has won a tyre contract with London Central, a division of the Go-Ahead Group, which operates 600 buses in south east and central London from depots in Bexleyheath, Camberwell, New Cross and Peckham. The contract sees London Central switch to a three year ‘pence per mile’ contract, similar to the agreement Michelin already has with London General, a separate division of the Go-Ahead Group, comprising a fleet of 700 vehicles in south west and central London.

Goodyear Says It Wants BFS-Union Deal Done First

(Akron/Tire Review) In an interesting twist to the current round of master contract talks, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has told the United Steelworkers that it wants the union to reach a deal with Bridgestone/Firestone before it will continue negotiations. It was expected that talks between Goodyear and the USW were further along than those between the union and Bridgestone/Firestone, and that the union’s talks with Bridgestone/Firestone would be more difficult.

Wider Availability for Dunlop Industrial Tyres

The Dunlop range of industrial tyres is now available directly from Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK, rather than through a single authorised distributor as previously. This will allow for wider distribution and availability of this range of tyres for the industrial and construction markets, according to Andy Morris, UK director of OTR tyres.

Goodyear Sells Cord Operations to Hyosung: Update

Following earlier reports of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company agreeing to sell its global tyre fabric operations to Hyosung Corporation, the company has released an official statement giving details of the transaction. Goodyear and its affiliates will receive $80 million for their tyre fabric manufacturing plants and assets, which include operations in Decatur, Alabama; Utica, New York; Americana, Brazil; and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg, subject to post-closing adjustments. The facilities, which employ about 1,000 people, produce and treat fabric that is used in Goodyear’s tyres.

Hyosung to Buy Goodyear Tyre Cord Plants

Korean company Hyosung Corp. is to take over four tyre cord plants from Goodyear Tire & Rubber for an undisclosed price, although various sources are quoting a figure of $80 million. Hyosung will acquire 100 per cent of Goodyear subsidiary Utica, plus it will assume control of the tyre manufacturer’s cord factory at Decatur. The other two factories are sited in Luxembourg and Brazil. In addition to the acquisitions, Hyosung has struck a deal – reportedly worth $3.2 billion – to supply Goodyear with tyre cord.

Goodyear Dunlop UK to List New Winter Tyres in Catalogue

Goodyear Dunlop UK is listing winter tyres in its trade catalogue this season. The best-known product in Goodyear range is the UltraGrip 7, which has won awards including the prestigious ADAC test, and is on sale for the first time in the UK ahead of this winter. “Our Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D was runner up in this test, so the company is very well prepared for winter,” corporate communications manager James Bailey told T&A, adding: “Our most recent new product is from Fulda, the Kristall. This tyre is designed for SUVs and 4x4s – ideal for the skiing holiday!”

The legislation regarding winter tyres is diverse across Europe, but the distinctive safety advantages of winter tyres are convincing drivers and national governments to consider making the use of winter tyres compulsory. In turn this provides retailers with a strong selling point for customers that plan to drive abroad to enjoy ski holidays for example. The reasons for increased legal recognition is not only the advantages of winter tyres on snow and ice. Retired Employees Protest at Goodyear and Bridgestone

The Akron Beacon Journal has reported that nearly 200 retired unionised workers have protested outside Goodyear’s corporate headquarters and later in front of Bridgestone Firestone’s Akron Technical Center to protest what they said are the tyremakers’ proposals to reduce retiree benefits. The protests, were aimed at pressuring Goodyear and Bridgestone in contract negotiations with the United Steelworkers of America. The union and two tyremakers are working under day-to-day extensions of contracts that expired in July. Negotiations started in June.

Improved Natural Rubber Prices Could Ease Manufacturing

If the current raw material price trend continues, it could help improve margins at tyre manufacturers. Natural rubber, which accounts for about a quarter of tyre raw material costs, is down over 20 per cent from the all-time high it hit earlier this year.

Union Says Little Progress Made With Goodyear

(Akron/Tire Review) United Steelworkers say that negotiations with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. continue, but “progress has been slow.” The union also indicated that some job action may be on the horizon. “Goodyear has not moved from its ‘cut and gut’ agenda. Your bargaining committee has remained steadfast and is determined to achieve a contract that is fair and equitable, that protects our retirees and that provides job security for our members, the union said in a memo to members.

Report: Tyler Preps Plan to Keep Goodyear Plant

(Akron/Tire Review) KLTV in Tyler, Texas, reported that Tyler city officials, concerned that Goodyear will close its tyre plant in that city, are preparing a financial incentive package to keep the plant operating. “We’re working with community leaders, business representatives to be sure that if we need it, we have a package to put on the table for Goodyear so they know we’re serious about keeping that plant here in Tyler,” Tyler Economic Development Council President Tom Mullins told the station. Goodyear has not indicated that the Tyler plant is in peril. The company is currently in talks with the United Steelworkers for a new master contract, and plant closures may be part of those talks.

Goodyear Launches Fuel Efficient Truck Tire Technology

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. today unveiled a new fuel efficiency technology that the company said can deliver up to 4 per cent better truck fuel economy. Goodyear’s Fuel Max Technology was launched in a new line that includes steer, drive, trailer tyres and retreaded tyres for line haul operations.

Goodyear Cuts 15 in Akron

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear has laid off some 15 workers at its corporate offices and technical centre in Akron. Reportedly, the layoffs are connected with the tyremaker’s recent decision to decrease production of private brand lines.
