Goodyear UK Partners with Casing Operations

Goodyear Dunlop UK has appointed two strategic partners for the collection of casings within the UK. The news comes as a direct result of the ongoing Complete Casings Control project which has the primary objective ensuring the company has a casings operation that is aligned to the needs of both external and internal customers whilst being “efficient, transparent and robust.” Goodyear describes the move as being part of the evolution of a “World Class Casings Operation.”

Nigel Sowerby New Director Truck Tyres at Goodyear Dunlop UK

Goodyear Dunlop UK has appointed Nigel Sowerby as Director, Truck Tyres in their UK and Ireland business, effective 1 March 2008. Robin Sharpe, current Director, Truck Tyres will handover to Nigel Sowerby to ensure during February before Sharpe moves on to a new assignment to be announced next month. Sowerby joined Goodyear Dunlop in 2005 as Southern Area Manager for the company’s TruckForce commercial vehicle tyre servicing network, before being promoted to the position of Manager, TruckForce, UK, in 2006.

Commenting on the appointment, current Director Truck Tyres, Robin Sharpe, commented: “Nigel and his team have done an outstanding job in building the TruckForce service network as a ‘Best in Class’ provider to the road transport industry. The time is now right to consolidate the management team to deliver a truly focused tyre and service offering, and I look forward to my next challenging role within Goodyear Dunlop.”

Goodyear Wants Zero Waste to Landfills

Goodyear in the US has launched a new initiative to completely eliminate shipping its tyre plant waste to landfills. All scrap tyres, mis-production and other waste is either being recycled or reused. In addition, Goodyear is taking steps to reduce the amount of scrappage and waste coming from its tyre plants.

Instead of going off to the landfill, scrap tyres are being shipped to companies that recycle tyres. Other waste, including no-production waste like paper, plastic drink bottles and other traditional garbage, is being sent to product recyclers. Tyre production waste is being shipped to waste processors. Used solvents are either reused or incinerated at an approved facility. The goal, said Goodyear, is to completely eliminate waste shipments to landfills. (Tire Review/Akron)

Blackcircles.com Adds Autocar Tyre Tests to Website

In partnership with Autocar Magazine, Blackcircles.com has entered into a partnership with Autocar Magazine that will enable the online tyre retailer to offer exclusive online video reviews of leading tyre brands. The video reviews will cover tests of numerous premium brands including Continental, Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone and Pirelli.

Blackcircles.com reports it is “delighted” to be partnering with the word’s first automotive magazine, and believes the impartial tests will help its customers make the correct and safe choice when selecting new tyres. The Autocar tests involve a series of categories, such as wet and dry braking and wet and dry handling. Motorists are able to access the video reviews by visiting www.blackcircles.com/tyretests.

Tyre Specialist Becomes Sheep Midwife

When Goodyear Dunlop UK off-the-road tyre specialist, Brian Eastman, visited a farm in Shurford he ended up using a more “hands-on” approach than he bargained for. In January Eastman was visiting Richard Parris at Cutliffe Farm when farmer Parris received a call informing him that one of his sheep was in a bit of bother during labour. He leaped to the rescue, taking an intrigued Brian Eastman with him, whereupon they found the sheep was struggling with a lamb in a breach position. Parris took control, whil Goodyear’s Eastman held the sheep in place and kept it calm. “It was an interesting night at the farm and certainly a first for me! Mother and baby are doing well!” Brian Eastman told T&A. Perhaps his example will lead to animal midwifery being added to OTR tyre training!

Tyremakers, Safety Group Cannot Appeal TPMS Decision

An attempt to challenge a NHTSA rule that allows vehicle manufacturers to fit US market cars with indirect TPMS systems rather than a direct system has been dismissed by the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The plaintiffs – consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, tyre manufacturers Goodyear, Bridgestone Firestone, Cooper and Pirelli, plus the Tire Industry Association, argued that the final NHTSA regulations fell far short of those intended by Congress. However, after examining paperwork submitted by Public Citizen following a similar decision six months ago, the court on January 22 again decided that it can see no compelling evidence that the shortcomings of indirect systems – the additional time taken to signal a loss of pressure, and compatibility issues – would create an injury risk for consumers.

Goodyear to Cut Production in France

Goodyear Tire & Rubber is planning to reduce tyre production at its two factories in Amiens, France. The production cuts will lead to a reduction of up to 500 employees at the plants and follows employees rejection (in October 2007) of company plans to modernize and renovate the plants. According to the company, the cuts are being made because costs are not competitive. Goodyear employs about 3,800 people in France, of which 2,700 are in the Amiens plants.

“We have communicated extensively with the trade unions, explaining the need for major changes. These changes would increase our competitiveness. Unfortunately, they have rejected the plan to improve competitiveness. Therefore, we have no choice but to reduce our costs as the plants are currently uncompetitive,” said Serge Lussier, Goodyear’s Europe, Middle East and Africa vice president of manufacturing. Goodyear said production of some tyres impacted by the move would be transferred to other, lower-cost factories in Europe and elsewhere. Some products will be eliminated. There have so far been no details of which lines will be eliminated or exactly where production will be transferred.

USW Reacts to Taylor Freeport Threat

Reacting to last week’s news that Titan International Chairman Morry Taylor threatened to reduce the workforce at its Freeport, Illinois, plant, USW Executive Vice President Ron Hoover issued this statement:

“The USW international, including myself, supported Titan’s purchase of the Freeport facility (from Goodyear), and I participated in the bargaining to accomplish the transaction. These negotiations were no different than most. Both parties had specific issues to address at the bargaining table.

Goodyear’s New Eagle F1 Asymmetric Wins Independent Test

Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric was recently rated best in a Tire Rack test. A comprehensive test of the new Goodyear tyre pitted it against three competitors in the “Max Performance” tyre category. The Tire Rack team tested the four tyres in road conditions – allowing subjective feedback on noise, ride quality and everyday handling, then judged the tyres in wet and dry conditions on the company’s test track. In summarizing the overall win for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric, Tire Rack concluded, “An excellent Max Performance Summer tyre that almost does it all.” Goodyear representatives put the tyre’s success down to innovations like the tyre’s “Active CornerGrip(TM) Technology,” which puts an Aramid reinforcement in the inside sidewall of the tyre.

Goodyear Announces Conversion Period for Convertible Notes

Goodyear Tire & Rubber announced on January 17 that its 4.00 per cent Convertible Senior Notes due June 15, 2034 are now convertible at the option of the holders and will remain convertible through March 31, 2008, the last business day of the current fiscal quarter. The notes became convertible because the last reported sale price of the company’s common stock for at least 20 trading days during the 30 consecutive trading-day period ending on January 16, 2008 (the 11th trading day of the current fiscal quarter), was greater than 120 per cent of the conversion price in effect on such day. The notes have been convertible in previous fiscal quarters.

Titan May Chop Production at Ex-Goodyear Plant

It appears, as previously reported, that the honeymoon between the United Steelworkers and Titan International Chairman and CEO Morry Taylor is over. News reports say that Taylor is threatening to move tyre production out of Titan’s plant in Freeport, Illinois, unless the USW goes along with his plans to make the former Goodyear plant operate profitably.

“That’s the way it is,” Taylor told the Freeport Journal-Standard. “We’re going to run a profitable plant or we’re going to shave it down until it does make money. I told everyone that when we first came here.” Apparently, Titan is seeking staffing and wage reductions, but specifics of Titan’s plan for the plant were not revealed. In a memo obtained by the Freeport newspaper, Taylor said that without concessions from the USW employment could be cut to the bare minimum allowed under Titan’s current contract with the Steelworkers.

Former Goodyear Division Forms China Joint Venture

Veyance Technologies Inc., formerly Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s Engineered Products division, has entered into a joint venture with Ruiyuan Rubber and Plastics Co. Ltd. to make conveyor belts in Yanzhou, China. Veyance said the new entity, Shandong Aneng Conveyor Belt & Rubber Co. Ltd., is the largest manufacturer of conveyor belts in China, with 20 production lines producing more than 12 million square metres of conveyor belts each year.

Titan Tire to Increase Prices

Titan Tire will increase prices on Titan, Goodyear and General branded OTR, farm and construction tyres as of March 1. The company reports that the increases will offset rising raw material, energy and transportation costs. While Titan reports that most prices will be seven per cent or less, it adds that “certain tyre prices may rise in excess of seven per cent due to realignment and positioning of the product.”

Goodyear US Factory Cited for Safety Violations

The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may penalise Goodyear US$52,000 for five safety violations it discovered during an inspection of the company’s facility in Social Circle, Georgia. Inspectors from the Administration noted two repeat violations, for which they proposed penalties of $42,500 after it became apparent that management had not performed certified periodic inspections of its energy control procedures, and that a production machine lacking proper safety guards was in use. Goodyear had been cited for similar failures after an inspection at the same facility in 2006.

Equipment Defect Caused Production Shutdown at Fulda

Goodyear’s Fulda Reifen unit in the German town of Fulda was forced to halt production on Tuesday due to defective equipment, and production remained shut down for about 24 hours. This enforced down time led to the loss of production of approximately 20,000 tyres. A spokesperson from Goodyear Dunlop confirmed that production resumed on Wednesday afternoon, however she declined to comment on how much the lost production will cost the company.
