A study carried out by Goodyear in the UK and six other European countries has confirmed what most of us already suspected – while the majority of road users are aware of the important role tyres play in road safety, many remain in the dark when it comes to tyre purchasing and maintenance. A total of 3,500 people were interviewed for the survey, both here and in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain.
After fourteen continuous seasons at the pinnacle of international motorsport, Bridgestone makes its final Formula One appearance at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. At the end of this race, Bridgestone will have contested a total of 242 Grands Prix since making its full time F1 entry at the Australian Grand Prix in 1997. Goodyear Aviation product support manager Robert Robson has emphasised the importance of daily aircraft tyre pressure checks. Aviation tyres' design and construction differ from automobile tyres, and though it is important to maintain the correct pressure in car tyres, proper aircraft tyre pressure is the most important factor in aircraft preventive maintenance. As a result, pilots and maintenance personnel must resist the temptation to follow the same schedule they would use in checking their cars' tyres to determine that their aircraft tyre pressure is correct, advises Robson, who regularly teaches aviation industry authorised inspection classes and has ten years of aviation tyre experience.
Following the HSE announcement, Goodyear Dunlop issued its own response to the case. According to the statement, Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Limited is fully committed to “conducting operations in an incident-free workplace to safeguard the health and welfare of colleagues, contractors, neighbours and visitors across the country.”
The company accepted the decision of the court and pointed out that it has already put “recommendations and learnings” in place following the HSE inquiry into the incident: “As part of our Global ‘No One Gets Hurt’ policy, we are driving behaviours through all areas of our business to ensure that our excellent safety record is not compromised again. We have learnt from this incident.” stated Martin Smith, Human Resources Director, UK and Ireland.
Goodyear Dunlop representatives were in court on 1 November after a teenage employee fractured his skull whilst maintaining machinery at the firm’s Wolverhampton compounding and retread manufacturing factility. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that it prosecuted Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Ltd after one of its maintenance team, Karl Illidge, struck his head at the firm's Stafford Road, Bushbury, Wolverhampton site. In July Goodyear Dunlop announced that it been awarded Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 18001 certification, following an external audited by BSI.
The HiQ fast fit network is working in conjunction with Goodyear to present drivers who purchase an EfficientGrip tyre online will receive a £10 fuel voucher to be used at their nearest Sainsbury station. In addition, purchasers can receive £20, £30 and £40 if they kit their cars out with two, three or four EfficientGrip tyres online.
Following many financial reports from tyre companies suggesting that sales are up but profits have not necessarily followed suit, it seems that the high price of rubber – cited as a major profit-eating factor – is set to continue its upward momentum in the near future. The Financial Times says heavy rains in south-east Asian rubber growing regions are responsible, having disrupted tapping in the region, thus limiting supply. According to the report, this situation is unlikely to be alleviated until 2012.

A nationwide campaign by tyre manufacturer Goodyear to promote its EfficientGrip tyres will be launched on Tuesday, 2 November in Gateshead. The manufacturer will reportedly partner with five petrol stations across England to give motorists £20 of free unleaded or diesel fuel, and will be available for four hours each day or until stocks run out with an estimated 600 motorists expected to benefit at each location. The campaign is designed to stress the fuel savings potential of fitting the company’s EfficientGrip tyre.

And this means a change in phone number for those dealers that want to ‘talk technical’. With immediate effect the number has changed to 0121 306 6890.
Goodyear is phasing out its Gemini Automotive Care retail store format, and will transition existing dealers to its new Tire & Service Network concept, reports Tire Review. On 1 October, the tyre-maker began moving its Gemini dealers over to the new programme and replacing old signage. The transition will continue through the end of the year. Goodyear will announce full programme details at its annual dealer meeting in early 2011, the company said.
On 9 and 10 October the British National Ploughing Championships took place at Grange de Lings near Lincoln. The winners of both the Reversible Final and the Conventional Final were using Optitrac tyres, manufactured by Goodyear, the event’s title sponsor. The Reversible Final saw Colin Bowen from Clun, Craven Arms in Shropshire win the plough-off with 19 points, retaining his title. Former World Ploughing Champion, John Hill from Hoylandswaine in Sheffield took the top spot in the Conventional Final plough-off with 21 points. Both ploughmen will represent England in the 2011 World Ploughing Contest to be held in Sweden.
Goodyear states it will report its third quarter 2010 financial results before markets open on Thursday, 28 October. An investor conference call will follow the announcement at 10:00 (15:00 local time in the UK). Richard J Kramer, chairman and chief executive officer, and Darren R Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer will participate in the call.
Goodyear has targeted US operators of the Cessna Citation CJ3 and Falcon 20/50/200 business jets with a new rebate promotion called ‘Flight Options’. The manufacturer is currently offering a $100 per tyre mail-in rebate programme, which it announced today at the National Business Aviation Association’s NBAA2010 trade show. Goodyear is distributing rebate coupons and further information at its booth (number 6670).
Qingdao, China-based tyre manufacturer Sailun Co., Ltd., has appointed Martin West as managing director of its new Sailun Tyres (Europe) subsidiary. West previously held a number of senior roles with Goodyear, Lassa and most recently Infinity. Tyres & Accessories understands that the new European team, which will be based in the UK, currently consists of two people including the recent appointment of a back office manager that brings with him logistics experience at Goodyear Dunlop. According to a statement released by Sailun Europe, the recent moves follow the firm’s decision to begin “strategically focussing to further develop their presence in the European market.”
