Toyo Tire Corporation has announced that its Open Country A/T III product has been selected as original equipment for the new Lexus GX, which went on sale in April 2024 in North America and elsewhere.

Vildósola Sr wins class on Toyo Open Country tyres at SCORE Baja 500
Toyo supplied a racing version of its Open Country M/T 4×4 tyre to several competitors in the SCORE Baja 500 took place (Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico; 29 May to 2 June). Only 169 of the 254 starting racing teams made it to the finish line of the challenging 777.26 km course, among them Gustavo Vildósola, his son Tavo Vildósola, Bryce Menzies, Christopher Polvoorde and Justin Davis, who all relied on Toyo rubber.
Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 on sale in the USA
Yokohama Tire Corporation, the North American manufacturing and marketing arm of Tokyo, Japan-based The Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd., reports that the Geolandar A/T4 G018, is now on sale in the US. Over 50 LT-metric sizes are expected to be available by year-end and “more than 130 euro-metric and LT-metric sizes ranging from 15- to 22-inch wheel diameters are planned for the line”.
Petlas stand and Peaklander M/T launch draw ‘significant attention’
Petlas Tire Corporation showcased its range of “innovative tyres and advanced technologies” at The Tire Cologne 2024, held from 4-6 June in Germany. Indeed, the Turkish tyre manufacturer’s large stand reportedly attracted “considerable interest from visitors and industry professionals alike”, according to company representatives.
Pirelli outperforms expectations in Q1 2024 results, pointing to better Q2
Financial analysts have said Pirelli’s first quarter 2024 results feature “strong sales”, which outperformed consensus estimates by 1 per cent. During the same period pre-tax profits (adjusted earnings before interest and taxes [EBIT] outperformed expectation at twice that rate [+2 per cent compared with the analysts consensus].
Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 launch announced in Japan, Europe and North America
Following its arctic preview at the start of March, Yokohama Rubber has simultaneously announced the launch of the Geolandar A/T4 all-terrain tyre for SUVs and pickup trucks in Japan, Europe and the North American markets.
Yokohama OE on Toyota Landcruiser 250
Scheduled to arrive in the UK later in 2024, the new 250 Series Toyota Land Cruiser debuted in Japan and selected international markets this month. The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. shares that it is supplying its Yokohama Geolandar X-CV (pattern number: G057) and Geolandar A/T G31 tyres as original equipment. The Land Cruiser is wearing the Geolandar X-CV in sizes 245/70R18 110H and 265/60R20 112H, and the Geolandar A/T G31 in 245/70R18 110H and 265/65R18 114V.
Davanti brand boasts “some of the most researched” SUV tyres out there
Recent analysis from Transport & Environment found that SUV sales in the UK have increased consistently over the last few years. Indeed, in 2023 60 per cent of new car registrations were SUVs, but what does that mean for the tyre industry? The shift in car manufacturing and consumer trends means there is an increase in demand for 4×4 and SUV tyres, which offer motorists reliability and safety, as well as the performance to tackle difficult terrains.

When choosing 4×4 and SUV tyres, it is ‘better to have, and not need.’ With this in mind, Auto Bild Allrad examines both on and off-road strengths in its 2024 summer tyre test. The publication examined 11 brands in size 235/55R19, and although none of the candidates achieved top marks on every type of surface, two tyres offer an “all-round no worries package on and off the road.”
UK SUV sales top 1 million in 2023
SUV sales in the UK have increased by 23 per cent since 2022, according to Transport & Environment analysis of Dataforce data. In 2022, the number of new SUVs (sports utility vehicles) registered stood at 910,000 but now that number has grown by a third and stands at 1.12 million. In 2021, 50 per cent of all new car registrations were SUVs. In 2022, that figure stood at 57 per cent. And in 2023, that rose again to 60 per cent. If the trend continues, in 2027 SUV registrations could make up 75 per cent of new registrations.
Pirelli honours BMTR Birmingham with double Performance Centre awards
PirelliBMTR Birmingham has secured a double victory in Pirelli’s UK retail network awards. The West Midlands retailer was awarded Pirelli Performance Centre (PPC) of the Year and Pirelli’s 4×4 Key Dealer of the Year, recognising BMTR’s “exceptional commitment to excellence and outstanding service in the automotive industry,” according to Pirelli. This is the fifth time BMTR have been crowned PPC of the Year. Chris Woodhall, sales director at BMTR, said the awards were “a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of our entire team.” Pirelli UK CEO, Livio Magni, said that the company applauds BMTR “for achieving this accolade for the fifth time. BMTR Birmingham has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in all areas of their business, from customer service to technical expertise.”
Yokohama tyres OE on new Mitsubishi Triton
The Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. is supplying its Geolandar A/T G94 tyres as original equipment (OE) on the new Triton pickup truck, launched by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in February 2024 in Japan. The Triton was introduced to the Japanese market about 12 years and is being fitted with 265/60R18 110H size tyres. The new Triton was launched in Thailand in July 2023, in the Philippines in January 2024, and in Australia and New Zealand in March 2024, and will be successively launched in approximately 100 countries around the world.
BFGoodrich tech team tune tyres for better response
BFGoodrichBFGoodrich’s technical experts have improved the stability and handling of a Ford Ranger deployed by the County Durham and Darlington Fire Service, after tuning the tyre inflation pressures to the precise needs of its BFGoodrich KO2 tyres following comprehensive analysis. The Targeted Response Vehicle was purchased by the fire and rescue service specifically to manage off-road work, including attending non-life threatening incidents. But some concerns about its instability led to a series of tyre tests at Millbrook Proving Ground, which highlighted issues with unpredictable change from significant understeer to oversteer.
Maxxis extends its CST 4×4 range with RH Claydon
Maxxis Tyres International (UK) Ltd has announced plans to expand the company’s CST-branded 4X4 tyre range of AT, MT, and Extreme products with RH Claydon. According to the company, CST’s Extreme 4×4 Land Dragon tyre, has been growing in popularity since being introduced into the UK market five years ago. With that in mind, officials explain that it was only a matter of time before the AT and MT were added to complete the off-road offering. Furthermore, Maxxis representatives report that CST is “becoming recognised as the tyre of choice, both in the UK and Internationally by the racing community”.
