The development of the winter tyre market has been a topic of discussion for years now. During the last decade this niche segment has experienced significant growth (see chart 1). And while winter tyres still only account for between one and two per cent UK replacement market share, that isn’t the case across Europe where winter tyre share exceeds 50 per cent. Besides, that doesn’t negate the safety benefits these products offer. Neither does it undermine the retail opportunities available to the trade. And of course the development of winter tyres – as with summer tyres and other products – is best done in partnership with original equipment manufacturers.
With all this in mind, it is no surprise that premium-focused manufacturer Pirelli invests what it does in the development, distribution and crucially the communication of the benefits of winter tyres. For example Pirelli held a series of experience events earlier this summer in order to not only explain but also demonstrate the benefits of winter tyres to market customers and partners. Tyres & Accessories attended one such event at Tamworth Snowdome and learnt how strong Pirelli is in this segment and experience the difference winter tyres make – especially on luxury 4×4 vehicles.
Spanish-based Membat exhibited at Citexpo for the third time this year. The company, which has been in business 10 years now, established its Membat private brand five years back. Demonstrating its private brand pedigree, the company owns the brand name, the moulds and has registered its patterns, which the firm is proud to say are designed in Spain. Production of Membat tyres began in 2012 and so these tyres are therefore entering the third year of manufacturing now.

Cooper Tire Europe has announced it will return to Rallyday in 2014 with its 4×4 Zone, which reportedly features “a host of 4×4 action” including: Race2Recovery, 4×4 Club Displays and Challenge Truck Demonstrations. Cooper will also be on hand to give tyre advice to 4×4 drivers, whilst showcasing its Armor-Tek3 heavy-duty carcass construction.
The launch date for the successor to the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO has been announced. The tyre maker claims the new All-Terrain T/A KO2 will be its “most advanced light truck tyre ever” and has scheduled its North American introduction for 1 November; it is likely that UK drivers will need to wait until 2015 before picking up a set.
Toyo’s Open Country W/T tyre is Audi’s choice as OEM fitment on its flagship Q7 model, a fact that Toyo says proves its quality. The Japanese manufacturer designed the model as a highway winter tyre for SUVs, but says its compound and tread design also make it a capable all-rounder suitable for UK driving conditions during most of the year.
Jaguar Land Rover has announced its chosen location for the OEM’s Special Vehicle Operations Technical Centre. The Technical Centre will be situated in Prologis Park, Ryton, near Coventry, and will become the global centre of excellence for the creation of high-end luxury bespoke commissions and extreme performance vehicles. Operations are set to begin towards the end of the year, with a team of 150 Jaguar Land Rover specialists based at Ryton, around 100 of which highly-skilled engineering and technician jobs will be new. £20 million will be invested in installing specialist equipment and a customer commissioning suite.
Kumho believes that UK drivers are now far better educated in the values of winter and all-weather tyres than before the big freeze of 2011, and demand for its seasonal products has continued to rise.
Just a couple of months before the Essen show, Silverline International Ltd became the UK distributor for the American Atturo tyre brand. So it was a pleasant surprise to bump into Silverline’s Chris Dawson during the Reifen show who explained the strategy behind taking on this brand.
Stapleton’s is launching a new exclusive brand into the market. Gripmax, which is squarely aimed at the 4×4 tyres comes as a response to demand from the company’s retail customers. According to the company, the competitively priced Gripmax 4×4 line-up will feature sizes previously only available through premium brands such as Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Michelin, and Pirelli.
For the second time in a row, Goodyear’s Wrangler DuraTrac tyre has been chosen as the best off-road tyre by readers of the specialised German magazine “Off Road”. It won in the category “Traction Tyres,” in which readers were invited to vote for one of 10 competitors.
Another comparative tyre test from a German magazine – this time Autozeitung Allrad (issue 2/2104) has put half a dozen 4×4 tyres through their paces. A Mercedes-Benz ML350 was used to test the 255/50 R19 W/Y tyres. Autozeitung Allroad rated four of the six tyres highly.
