Maxxis Raises its Profile at Brityrex

Maxxis has reported that the company enjoyed a busy three days at Brityrex International 2007, the UK’s only independent tyre trade show, with the Maxxis Centres of Excellence initiative and the new Maxxis catalogue reportedly generating major interest.

“Visitors to Brityrex were the first to see our new product catalogue, which incorporates
500 tyre patterns and sizes and covers performance radials, high performance tyres and 4×4 tyres for cars and vans, plus heavy truck products and our Trailermaxx high speed trailer range,” said Derek McMartin, managing director of Maxxis International UK.

“We were also impressed with the level of interest Group Tyre members showed in the Maxxis Centres of Excellence programme, which is designed to help retailers maximise profitability though a winning combination of quality products, value for money and industry-leading delivery and technical support,” he continued. According to Group Tyre (UK) commercial operations director, Karl Naylor, several dealerships have already signed up to become Maxxis Centres of Excellence (see T&A June 2007’s retail feature for more details on this).

Bandvulc Director Tires of Govt’s Recycled Arguments Against Retreads

Bandvulc director, Richard O’Connell, has received a government letter confirming his fears that retreaders will continue to be unfairly penalised for the foreseeable future. After a four year fight to be heard, Richard O’ Connell, director of Ivybridge based Bandvulc Tyres, thinks his struggle has finally reached a dead end, his argument having continually fallen on deaf ears.

O’Connell had thought that by confronting Ben Bradshaw MP at labour’s last annual conference, taking the opportunity to express his Industry’s frustration on stage and asking that the government allow it the same benefits as its new tyre counterparts, his efforts would at least lead to an open discussion. Instead, the Minister for Local Environment, Marine and Animal Welfare has written a letter O’Connell says, clearly demonstrates the Government is totally misinformed about the benefits of retreading.

Pirelli Tyre Post Positive Quarterly Figures

Pirelli &C. SpA have released company financial figures for the quarter up to March 31, 2007, and this data indicates a largely positive three months for Pirelli Tyre. In the first quarter of 2007 Pirelli Tyre registered a 6 per cent increase in sales, in spite of a negative exchange rate effect, and although faced with increases in raw material prices operating income rose compared with the same period in 2006.

Revenues as of 31 March 2007 were equal to 1,060 million euros, up from 1,000.4 million euros in the first quarter of 2006, an increase of 9.1 per cent on a like-for-like basis, net of any exchange rate effect. EBITDA was equal to 150.9 million euros.

Operating income amounted to 103.7 million euros, an increase of 4.5 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2006 when operating income was recorded as 99.2 million euros. The ratio over sales was substantially unchanged compared with last year, despite increases in raw material costs.

Bridgestone Awards First Expert Level Dealers

At the end of April Bridgestone UK announced details of its Expert Level Truck Point Dealer Audit Programme, naming the first three recipients. The accreditation scheme is the latest stage in the multi-million-pound total tyre management investment programme Bridgestone has been engaged in for the last three years. A further 46 external “Expert Level” audits were scheduled to have been completed at the end of April. Bridgestone plan to hold an official awards ceremony for the remaining Expert Level dealers at the annual Truck Point conference in October.

Talking to Tyres & Accessories, Bridgestone representatives described how working with Lloyd’s register made their scheme “a first.” As external auditors, LRQA (Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance), a leading management systems assessment body, carry out the necessary checks independently, adding greater value to the validation of the Expert Level dealers.
The objective of the programme is to recognise the high service standards of Expert Level Truck Point dealers, and to further improve the service standards of the entire network. The Expert Level Truck Point Audit Programme audits customer service provision, casing management, health & safety policy, equipment checks, administration, invoicing and training within Truck Point dealers.

Yokohama to Increase Production Capacity in Thailand

In addition to its plans to treble capacity at its Shinshiro-Minami factory in Japan, Yokohama has released details of its intention to boost production capacity for passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres in Thailand. Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) will expand capacity in the number two plant at its 420,000 square metre Rayong Province factory, the Yokohama Group’s largest tyremaking facility, to 2.8 million tyres in the 2009 financial year.

As part of this second stage of expansion at their number two plant, Yokohama Rubber will employ a small-scale integrated manufacturing system like that previously introduced in the first stage of expansion. This system will shorten the timeframe between the beginning of plant construction to when operation start-up begins requires a smaller-size investment. This second stage expansion program will take one year and 7 billion yen (£29.3 million) of investment.

Yokohama Rubber Sales Increase 10.1%

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced on May 10 that its net sales had risen 10.1 per cent to 497.4 billion yen (£2.083 billion) in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2007. This sales total is the company’s highest ever, with sales growth resulting from unit sales gains and from a weaker yen, adding yen value to sales generated outside of Japan. The main increase in sales was seen in the company’s Tire Group and Multiple Business (diversified products) Group.

Operating income dropped by 4 per cent to 21.1 billion yen (£83.4 million), a figure the company has attributed to increases in raw material costs outpacing increases in net sales, and net income declined by 23.7 per cent to 16.4 billion yen (£68.7 million). This drop in net income reflected a tax benefit recorded in the previous year in connection with earlier write-downs of equity in a US subsidiary.

Do-It-Yourself

With the global OTR tyre market dragging on into yet another year of shortages, some large scale equipment operators are more than fed up – they are ready to take matters into their own hands. With supplies of quality new tyres remaining scant and some sources asking obscene prices for tyres, and given the impact the number of retreadable used casings available, or not available, has had on the retreading market, keeping one’s vehicles suitably shod at may times require a whole new approach. If you can’t buy a retread, why not buy a retreader….

Or at least partner yourself with a company possessing specialist knowledge in the retreading of OTR tyres. One such company who has done just that is mining giant Rio Tinto, whose vast open cast mines in the expanses of Western Australia make up 20 per cent of the global conglomerate’s assets and deliver more than 70 million tonnes of iron ore per year, as well as a number of other commodities in differing quantities. But operations on this scale cannot be maintained without earthmoving vehicles such as loaders and graders, not to mention the massive dump trucks synonymous with industrial mining – and to keep the supply of wealth flowing from the ground all of these vehicles require tyres.

ETRMA Joins European Road Safety Charter

At the end of April the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA), the representative association for ten of the leading tyre companies operating in Europe, signed up to the European Road Safety Charter. The April 27 signing ceremony was chaired by European Commission vice-president Jacques Barrot in the presence of the Association’s president, Francesco Gori, vice-president Eric de Cromières and secretary general, Fazilet Cinaralp.

“Today I am pleased that at the time of Europe’s first Road Safety Day, the ETRMA has signed up to the Charter and is making strong commitments,” stated Mr. Barrot during the proceedings. “The Tyre Industry’s dedication represents an encouraging signal to achieving the European Road Safety Charter objectives.”

Hankook Passes the 100 Million Mark in China

In late March Hankook Tire celebrated a significant milestone – the 100 millionth tyre manufactured by the company in China came off the production line at Hankook’s Jiaxing facility in Zhejiang Province. This achievement is noteworthy not only in terms of Hankook’s presence in China, but it also serves as a reminder of the speed at which the country’s tyre industry has developed – China’s National Bureau of Statistics records the nation’s total tyre production in 2006 to be 433 million units, a 15 per cent year on year increase.

Speaking on this topic in early 2007, Cho Choong Hwan, vice chairman and former CEO of Hankook Tire, remarked that production from within the BRIC nations – Brazil, Russia, India and China – was growing at a faster rate than domestic demand, meaning that exports from these market were growing considerably, particularly from China.

NTDA Names 2007 TAFF Award Winners

On Wednesday 2, alongside the Brityrex International exhibition, the NTDA named the 2007 TAFF award winners. Michelin took best single company result of the night, winning two awards. But Bridgestone, Vellco, Apaseal and Group Tyre were also celebrating success in categories including production innovation, wholesaler of the year and tyre and aftermarket equipment supplier of the year.

The awards were presented during a glittering ceremony at Manchester’s Palace Hotel, which featured well-known stand-up comic Stan Boardman. The Tyre and Fast Fit (TAFF) Awards, which are sponsored by Renault UK, are the NTDA’s own awards which were established in 2005 to reward excellence from industry suppliers and, in that short time, they have firmly established themselves as the premier awards for the UK Tyre Industry.

The 2007 TAFF awards included categories for Tyre Manufacturer, National Wholesaler, Tyre and Aftermarket Equipment Supplier, Product Innovation and a special award for Industry Advertising Campaigns. A special category covering scrap tyre disposal, collecting and recycling is entitled the Environmental Award.

Tyre Industry Welcomes Continued Use of Non-Metric Units

Non-metric units have received a welcome stay of execution from the European commission, a letter from the commission, made public last night reveals. The commission had been proposing to ban the use of non-metric units (including inches) with effect from the end of 2009. The news that this move has now been dropped indefinitely has been welcomed by the tyre industry.

The Tyre Industry Federation (TIF) lobbied strongly on behalf of the tyre industry that no longer permitting the use of non-metric units would have a severe impact on both the industry itself and the users of the product.

Deldo Focusing on Established Private Brands

After one glance at Deldo’s product and brand portfolio it is clear that the Belgian tyre wholesaler is a leading player amongst distributors of exclusive tyre brands. Since its foundation some 30 years ago the company has increasingly developed into a specialist within the budget tyre segment without neglecting the premium tyre market, and in recent times Deldo Autobanden has again focused upon the premium market segment. Due to an overall increase in sales figures the company now has decided to increase its central warehouse in Antwerp’s free harbour from a current 40,000 m² up to 50,000 m².

New Marketing Campaign for Goodyear India

Goodyear India has launched a new marketing campaign centred upon the theme “Take the winning turn” as part of an overall marketing strategy aimed at strengthening its position within India’s consumer replacement market. This campaign kicks off with a new television commercial focusing upon Goodyear’s association with a new movie, Ta Ra Rum Pum, the story of a Nascar driver who fights the odds to become a champion. Goodyear was an obvious choice as a partner in the making of this movie, having been the sole provider of tyre equipment to Nascar since 1997. The company recently signed a deal with Nascar to extend its exclusive association until 2012.

The television commercial, which also emphasises the tyremaker’s 50-year association with Nascar championships, began to be screened in India during the last week of April. The advertisement showcases the “Eagle” range of tyres, which are fitted to Nascar vehicles and in the movie help the star, Saif Ali Khan, to become a champion driver. Products from the Eagle range are available in India both as replacement market tyres and as OE for some premium models, such as all Mercedes Benz cars sold in India.

EU Tyre Recycling Tests Outline “Best Available Technology”

Estimates put forward during the European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) Conference 2007 in Brussels suggest that at least 300 million tyres reach their end-of-life each year throughout the EU’s 27 member states, with similar amounts found in North America, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. Taking all of these regions collectively it is likely that the equivalent of more than one billion passenger car tyres require scrapping each year, and in the past many of these were destined for landfill or otherwise illegally dumped.

With EU directives banning the stockpiling of tyres or their disposal in landfill alternative methods of processing end-of-life tyres have been sought, however ETRA have reported that only a third of these tyres are being recycled into recovered materials, the bulk of them instead burnt as a fuel source. The results of conducting pyrolysis on scrap tyres have not in the past achieved promising results, with the resultant carbon being high in ash content and therefore only suitable for low-grade uses.
