Hankook Gains Saturn OE Spot

(Akron/Tire Review) Hankook Tire Corp. has earned an optional equipment position on the 2006 Saturn Ion. The South Korea tyre manufacturer will supply Hankook H725A tyres in size P205/55R16H to GM for the vehicle. Hankook CEO Choong-hwan Cho said the new OE contract “has not only brought recognition of Hankook Tire’s technology within the advanced auto market, but will also result in a significant boost to exports and overseas brand recognition.”

The new deal with GM pushes Hankook’s non-domestic OE business past $100 million annually, the company said. Hankook currently supplies tyres to Ford, Volkswagen, Renault, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi, among others. Hankook’s overseas OE business will rise to 10 per cent of its total exports, the company said.

Hankook at the Bary Rally

Hankook Tyres recently participated in the 2005 Swansea Bay Rally. The annual event is made up of nine major championships including the MSA Gravel National Rally Championship, Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge, Peugeot Total 206 Super Cup and of course Hankook 205 Challenge. For competitors of the Hankook 205 Challenge, this is the highlight of the season as they take on some of the most challenging WRC stages of Rally GB.

This year Chris Bayliss and co-driver Mark Mason took their second Hankook 205 Challenge win of the year at the Swansea Bay Rally. In stark contrast to last year’s event, which was dominated by one crew, Bayliss/Mason were part of a tight four-way battle for the lead, eventually taking the spoils by 1.1 seconds from Ian Winstanley / Neil Bye, with Rob Wilson / Dylan Jenkins third, nine seconds in arrears.

Independent Success Story

Dexel Tyres is something of a rarity in today’s tyre business – a family-owned business that has been trading for over 40 years and which is still expanding.
The business was founded in 1961 by Harry France and, over the next 25 years, was steadily expanded by his son, Peter. It was Peter who purchased the premises in Staniforth Road, Sheffield in the 1960s that today are the group’s head office. Nowadays the business is under the control of Peter’s son Paul as managing director, assisted by his sister Julie as group credit controller.

The policy of expansion has continued and the company has doubled in size over the past decade, today claiming to be one of the UK’s largest independent tyre companies, with an annual turnover of more than £13 million and sales of over 100,000 tyres a year.
The pattern of expansion has been steady, rather than dramatic, and concentrated on the East Midlands area of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, opening depots in Worksop, Gainsborough, Horncastle, Market Rasen and two in the city of Lincoln.

South China Tire & Rubber – New Kid on the Block

The global tyre industry is littered with famous names, with some companies proudly boasting traditions that go back decades – in some cases over a century.
However, the industry is a dynamic one, with new names appearing all the time. This is especially true in today’s emerging industrial economies, of which the most visible example is that of China, which is rapidly climbing the list of major consumers of commodities such as steel and rubber.

One of the many companies in our industry contributing to this phenomenon is South China Tire & Rubber (SCTR), which was established in 1988 and began production four years later. SCTR claims to be the first modern enterprise in the Chinese tyre industry to have bought in internationally advanced technology to manufacture radial tyres. The main production and testing machines come from the USA, Japan and Europe, with many building machines sourced from VMI in The Netherlands. As well as equipment, SCTR has recruited expertise and personnel from internationally famous tyre manufacturers.

IT&T Signs Exclusive Firenza Truck Tyre Deal

Oldbury-based tyre wholesaler International Tyres & Trading Ltd. (IT&T) has recently been appointed the sole UK and Ireland distributor for Firenza truck tyres; a brand new to the market.

IT&T was founded in 1991 by directors Mike Bolton and Paul Jackson. Both men had considerable experience of the tyre industry – Bolton in retreading and Jackson in wholesaling – and they set up IT&T to supply retailers, rather than end users, with tyres. From Day 1 the business concentrated on truck tyres and built up a reputation as a supplier of premium, leading brand names. “We were not known as a budget brand provider” said Mr. Bolton. Even today, truck tyres account for around 90 per cent of the company’s business but in the past couple of months, IT&T has taken a different direction by taking on the Firenza franchise.

Bridgestone Americas Holding (BSAH/Nashville), subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation, announced its financial results for the six month period ending June 30, 2005. Operating income improved over the prior year to $185 million (from $159 million in the first half of 2004, a 16% increase). The improvement in operating income was due to enhanced tyre product and brand mix and increased efficiencies which helped offset unprecedented increases in raw material costs. Net income also rose in the first half of 2005 by 35%, to $138 million from $102 million in the first half of 2004. BSAH benefited from strong growth in its Latin American Operations and in BFS Diversified Products, LLC. BFS Retail & Commercial Operations, LLC also exhibited growth in the first half of 2005.

Bridgestone: Smaller OP Drop Than Expected

Tyre maker Bridgestone Corp. said on Tuesday first-half operating profit edged up despite higher raw materials prices, and it lifted its full-year forecasts citing robust sales of high-end products. The higher forecast was expected after Bridgestone said last month it would likely post a smaller drop in 2005 operating profit than first thought thanks to brisk demand for tyres that offer higher safety or help raise fuel economy.

Mixed Fortunes for Michelin in First Half

Michelin has published its financial results for the first half of the year, showing a 0.1 per cent increase in net sales over 1H 2004 to 7.49 bn euros and a rise in net income of 5.5 per cent to 385.9 m euros.

At first reading, these results seem to indicate stability and “business as usual”, but in fact the story behind them is one of wildly differing performances in the various geographic and product sectors, set against a background of inexorably rising raw material costs.

Of the 7.49 bn euros turnover, car tyre sales were 4.12 bn, while truck tyre sales accounted for 2.41 bn euros. Operating income was 679 m euros, of which 383 m was car tyres and 283 m truck tyres.

Bridgestone to Gain F1 Teams

The Williams, Red Bull and possibly the Toyota Formula 1 teams are to join the Bridgestone camp next season, German publication “Auto Motor & Sport” has reported. Bridgestone currently provides tyres to Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi, while Michelin produces tyres for all the remaining teams. This could mean that the current 7:3 ratio in favour of Michelin could become 6:4 in favour of Bridgestone next year. Both Bridgestone and Ferrari are likely to see the news as a positive development, as the manufacturer is currently only basing its data on one top team.

Nine-Year Tyre Life

Colchester-based Hamblion Transport is still using the original Michelin 295/80 XDE drive axle tyres on its five and six year old 18 tonne 4×2 rigids, despite each vehicle having covered over 500,000 km since being purchased new.

According to a Transport News Network story, the tyres are still in their ‘second life’ phase, having just been regrooved, and have yet to be sent back to Michelin to be RemiXed for a third life, let alone regrooved a second time for a fourth life. “In effect, this means that simply by adopting a professional tyre management policy and following Michelin’s four lives tyre package, the tyres should be good for over 1,000,000 km,” explains Barry Hamblion, managing director.
