Distribution Channels Continue to Evolve

“I would like to get rid of the expression ‘controlled distribution’,” one contributor told Tyres & Accessories. And this is because along with this term come some ominous implications – that manufacturers can purposefully steer purchasers towards their own products. Of course, this is said to take place most naturally in a manufacturer owned equity like Michelin’s ATS Euromaster, for example.

However, the concept of ‘controlled distribution’ covers a whole spectrum of different scenarios. These range from the obvious – manufacturer owned entities – to the more subtle influence manufacturers can exert over completely independent wholesalers and dealers. It is seldom as straightforward as one person controlling and another being controlled. ‘Controlled distribution’ does not only refer to the role played out by manufacturer equities alone, but also to a wide spectrum of influence extending as far as the independent wholesaler.

Local Council Sets Up Dumped Tyre Hotline

Dumped tyres are becoming the bugbear of environmental officials in Louth and Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire. But East Lindsey District Council will not be defeated and has a plan to curb the fly-tipping of tyres. The council has teamed up with Lincolnshire Police and the Environment Agency to tackle the problem, and are calling on the public for information. “We need to know who is responsible for the dumping of these piles of tyres,” said East Lindsey’s head of environmental services Pat Fowler.

Dozens of tyres are being left at unauthorised spots across the district during the past month, including North Holmes Road, Louth; Rossa Lane, Trusthorpe; Upgate, Louth; and the Bluestone Heath Road, Louth.
Anyone who witnesses the tyres being dumped is urged to call the freephone fly-tipping hotline, 0800 195 5228, with the registration number of any vehicle used. The people behind the hotline say all information will be treated in confidence.

Bringing Back Respectability to Car Tyre Retreading

(India/Rubber Asia) Talk to motorists in most European countries about retreads and retreading, but don’t expect much more than a blank look in return. If you are lucky enough to strike a cord of recognition, you are likely to be quickly disappointed as soon as it becomes clear that the word retreading is irretrievably confused with terms like recut, regrooved (illegal in the case of car tyres) or part-worn. Somewhere along the line it is obvious that the retread has suffered a serious image problem.
