Fourth consecutive TyreSafe win for Protyre

Protyre, the retail division of Micheldever Tyre Services, has been named TyreSafe Retailer of the Year at the now-annual TyreSafe Awards – for the fourth consecutive time.

The company’s continued commitment to raising awareness of tyre safety and the dangers of poorly maintained or part worn tyres was again applauded by the judging panel. Protyre’s initiatives during last year’s Tyre Safety Month included free safety checks, customer email campaigns and a full day of live radio interviews.

Mitas tyres OE on new GasGas Trial motorcycles

Spanish off-road motorcycle specialist GasGas has selected the Mitas ET-01 trial tyre as original equipment for two of its new models, the GasGas Trial Contact ES and GasGas Trial School. These are the first GasGas motorcycles fitted with Mitas tyres as original equipment.

After the Storm: Avon Tyres releases Storm Endurance race tyre

The recent replacement of the long-running Avon Storm sport-touring tyre range with the new Spirit ST hasn’t marked the end of the line for the Storm. Avon Tyres reports it has developed a new Storm Endurance motorcycle race tyre, and this has already gained its first competitive victory courtesy of Neate Racing’s win at the Spa Classic 4 Hour race in late June.

Red Dot Awards for five tyres

The best designers and manufacturers of the year were recognised on 3 July at the Red Dot Gala 2017 event in Essen, Germany, and amongst the products selected by the 9-strong Red Dot judging panel were five tyres; these gained ‘Red Dot’ awards in Product Design. The awarded tyres are the Continental PremiumContact 6, Federal 595RS-RR, Laufenn I FIT, Kumho Crugen HP71 and Nexen N’Fera RU1.

Computer simulations shed light on fine particles from tyres and brakes

A study based on collaboration between Swiss technical university Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Cornell University has examined the fine particles produced by adhesive wear, using computer simulations to identify how these particles form. Researchers hope that their work – which they call a “breakthrough” – may lead to cost savings and environmental benefits.

Bridgestone wins two TyreSafe awards

Bridgestone has been honoured with two TyreSafe Awards at 2017 prize giving ceremony. The company collected the Innovation and use of Technology award for its DriveGuard tyre, along with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the end of the night.

DriveGuard was commended for its ability to keep motorists moving after a puncture and removing the immediate burden and unsafe circumstances of a flat tyre. Bridgestone’s comprehensive and holistic approach to road safety throughout the year was then commemorated with the outstanding achievement award minutes later.

Mahindra & Mahindra names Apollo Tyres its ‘Business Partner of the Year’

Major Indian vehicle manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra bestowed its ‘Business Partner of the Year’ award upon Apollo Tyres at its recent annual suppliers meeting. The award, the highest recognition given to any supplier for overall outstanding performance during the entire financial year, was accepted by Satish Sharma, Apollo Tyres’ Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa region president, and Sandeep Mathur, the tyre maker’s head of OEM and Institutional Business.

Year-long happiness: Eight all-season tyres put to the test

The concluding comments in the tyre test published in the latest issue of Auto Bild Allrad offer food for thought to anyone considering their tyre options for the coming winter. All-season tyres, posit the three-man team behind the German magazine’s evaluation of eight SUV tyres, can be “a fully-fledged alternative to seasonal tyre changes – provided they are as good as our test winners.” Tyre buyers shouldn’t hesitate to place their trust in the best all-season rubber, they add, even if dedicated summer and winter tyres still can’t be beat in specific performance areas.

June production a record for STARCO’s UK factory

We’ve grown accustomed to seeing production capacity taken out of Europe and relocated to countries where costs are lower. Although STARCO transferred its GS wheel production from Switzerland to Croatia in 2015, the company is very pleased with the performance its tyre and wheel plant in the UK is delivering. It reports that June was a record-breaking month for the factory in Crewe, with a total of 46,000 tyres produced. Furthermore, STARCO says orders for Crewe-made products are on the rise.

Tyresure launches IMI TPMS training programme at Automechanika

During the recent Automechanika exhibition Tyresure launched its latest training opportunity – an IMI-accredited specialist TPMS course. According to the company, this training is being offered to customers in the UK first and is targeting key distributors and wholesalers in the first instance.

Company representatives explained that the course features both theory and practical elements and is about servicing as much as training.
