Pirelli to sponsor NTDA’s ‘Tyre Retail Centre of the Year’ award

This year’s National Tyre Distributors Association’s annual dinner is the 85th holding of the event. While bearing a new name – what the industry has long known as the TAFF Awards has been rebranded as the Tyre Industry Awards – the dinner remains the UK industry’s main social event. Today, Pirelli announced it will sponsor the ‘Tyre Retail Centre of the Year’ award category. The award will be handed out at the annual NTDA dinner and prize-giving ceremony in Manchester on 8 October.

Michael Portillo to host 2014 NTDA tyre awards

The NTDA has announced that former cabinet minister Michael Portillo will present the 2014 Tyre Industry Awards, which will take place on 8th October 2014 at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. The Tyre Industry Awards is the new name for the Tyre and Fast Fit awards (affectionately known as the TAFF awards), which themselves carried on a long line of industry awards under a third moniker.

NTDA shares its view on tyre labelling consultation

Following the news that the government is consulting the market on the full implementation and enforcement of tyre labelling legislation in the UK, the NTDA has shared its views on both the process and its response to the consultation.

According to the NTDA, the government consultation proposal can be summarised like this: “The department has appointed a tyre enforcement authority (the National Measurement Office) which will be responsible for organising a risk-based market surveillance approach and for the application of appropriate enforcement measures that impose the minimum burdens necessary to meet our EU obligations.

The NTDA has appointed Stefan Hay as its new director, succeeding Richard Edy who is retiring after 25 years in the post. The changeover will officially take place at the end of January.

NTDA to sponsor Manchester’s Brityrex 2014

The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) has agreed a deal with show organiser ECI International to become the major sponsor of Brityrex International 2014, continuing a long-established relationship between the two organisations. The show will return to EventCity in Manchester between 7 and 9 October. NTDA chairman Stephen Callow welcomed the deal: “The NTDA has enjoyed a close and valuable relationship with Brityrex for many years and I’m extremely pleased that we will be working constructively together with the show again next year.

NTDA survey: Labels trumped by price concerns

Almost a year after point of sale tyre labelling became mandatory in Europe, the NTDA has revealed that it plans to release the details of a survey into attitudes towards labelling at the association’s annual dinner in October.

Almost 12 months since the labelling of tyres at the point of sale became mandatory across the EU and the UK, the NTDA wondered what effect, if any, it has had on the way tyres are sold – have customers become better informed and more knowledgeable? Are they aware of the introduction of the label? Do they appreciate the information on it? And how important is this relative to price?

Sun shines on NTDA Golf Day

The 2013 NTDA Golf Day, sponsored once again by Westlake Tyres, was held on Wednesday, 24 July. The setting was the stunning stately home of Brocket Hall, which stands in 540 acres of grounds and boasts two championship golf courses. The NTDA event took place on the Palmerston course and, unlike last year at The Belfry, when a torrential rainstorm swept the course, the day's play took place in brilliant sunshine. A full list of winners is given below, but a couple of highlights were the guest speaker Adger Brown, who proved that comedy is not his only talent by winning the Les Amiss Bowl, and Brian O'Neill of the ITIA, who recorded a hole in one. The 'Beat the Pro' competition on the fifth hole raised the figure of £400 for BEN.

NTDA announces TAFF Awards 2013 shortlist

The National Tyre Distributors Association has unveiled its 2013 shortlist for each of the five balloted categories in the Tyre & Fast Fit Awards. The Association also called for nominations for the Innovation Award and for the Tyre Centre of the Year Award, entering its third year as part of the annual British tyre industry Oscars. Voting this year will be 100 per cent online, with NTDA members and non-members alike eligible to vote. The Awards are sponsored by speciality chemicals group Lanxess for the second successive year, and the media partner is Tyres & Accessories magazine.

NTDA warns of Northern Ireland tyre scam

The NTDA have told us of a tyre scam currently doing the rounds in Northern Ireland. Regional Chairman Roy Nutt says that two retailers in Northern Ireland have been approached by a person looking to buy tyres with a stolen credit card. An enquiry was submitted via the website and, in what seems like an early April Fool's joke, the enquiry was submitted in the name of a Mr. Fraud and the e-mail address given was rip@tyretradeoff.com.

Kwik Fit director of communications elected NTDA VC

The National Tyre Distributers Association (NTDA) has elected Roger Griggs, director of communications at Kwik Fit, to the role of vice chairman, working with Stephen Callow, who succeeded Kwik Fit’s David White as NTDA chairman in March 2012. Griggs has spent 34 years in the tyre industry, starting in a Jersey tyre centre in the late 1970s. Richard Edy, director of the NTDA, says: “We are delighted that Roger has joined the board. His experience in all areas of the industry means he has a great deal to offer and we look forward to supporting him in developing future campaigns.”

NTDA chairman Stephen Callow in focus

Lest anyone ask “who’s that giving this year’s speech”, NTDA chairman, Stephen Callow used the opportunity to give some background to how he came to hold this responsibility. In his words, he was like many in the wider tyre industry, “born with rubber in [his] veins.” He is a second generation tyre specialist thanks to the influence of his late father, Ronnie Callow. Ronnie, as Stephen explained in his inaugural chairman’s speech, was a “colourful” character – a description, he noted, that those who remember him would agree with.
