Hamilton wins first battle of Pirelli wet tyres at Singapore

The first ever wet Singapore Grand Prix saw the top six starting on Pirelli’s Cinturato Green intermediate tyre and a mixture of Cinturato Blue wets and intermediates further down the grid. the early safety car periods provided the opportunity for some drivers to change from wet to intermediate tyres, while Daniel Ricciardo, who had started on intermediates, opted to change to a fresh set of intermediates. The Red Bull driver finished the grand prix second, behind the Mercedes of race winner Lewis Hamilton.

Nokian Tyres selected for the DJSI World sustainability index

Nokian Tyres has been selected for Dow Jones’ DJSI World sustainability index. With a total sustainability score nearly twice as high as the industry average, Nokian Tyres significantly improved its results in the 2017 assessment. Nokian Tyres’ score of 78 points was only one point behind the industry’s highest-scoring company globally.

Avon tyres OE on new TVR

TVR has commissioned a bespoke Avon tyre as the original equipment (OE) fitment for the new TVR model which will be unveiled at Goodwood Revival on Friday 8 September.

Pirelli helps Moto Club Benelli set six scooter speed records

The Moto Club Benelli has set six new scooter world speed records at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, in Utah, USA on Pirelli’s new Diablo Rosso Scooter tyre. The Benelli model 491 scooter with custom graphics by Aldo Drudi, was prepared by Bologna-based performance company, Malossi, using their 50, 85 and 100cc RC-one engine configurations, further enhanced by Jörg Möller.

Video: Avon aids Bielicki set motorcycle burnout world record

Avon Tyres’ Storm 3D X-M has helped Polish stunt rider Maciej “DOP” Bielicki set a new world record for the longest recorded rolling burnout on a motorcycle. Using a specially closed road near the Harley-Davidson dealership in the city of Rzeszów, south-east Poland, Bielicki set the record on his Street Rod bike, spinning the rear wheel for just under three miles. Growing fleets could reduce costs, eco-footprint with PPK contracts – Michelin

According to the latest statistics on the UK commercial vehicle industry, the number of medium to large commercial vehicle operators has been rising in the last five years. This represents an opportunity for outsourced tyre contract and service providers, as larger fleets present an increasingly complex task to manage their tyre usage, and associated servicing. Michelin solutions estimates that 42 per cent of truck fleets in the UK operating 51 or more vehicles are still purchasing tyres on a transactional basis, and therefore managing them in-house. It argues that this process is likely increasing their costs and environmental footprint.

New Vredestein tyres for road cycling segment, as tyre importance ‘increases’

Apollo Vredestein has introduced three new Vredestein brand cycle tyres for the sport segment at the Eurobike exhibition in Friedrichshafen. The tyre manufacturer said it was responding to road bike manufacturers’ production of increasingly stiffer frames and wheels to ensure better feedback, comfort and grip for riders. With these characteristics, the importance of tyres increases, since the feel of the road surface and grip contribute more to the overall cycling experience. Vredestein has introduced the Fortezza Duralite, Fortezza Tubeless Ready, and Fortezza Senso Tri, in addition to a new size for the Fortezza Senso Superiore.

‘Hybrid’ rubber offers hope of self-healing tyres

The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) encourages us to “imagine a tyre that could heal after being punctured,” and a team from the school has done more than just imagine – according to SEAS, its researchers have “developed a new type of rubber that is as tough as natural rubber but can also self-heal.”

Nokian introducing 2nd generation of terminal tyres

This autumn will see the market launch of Nokian Tyres’ second generation of HTS terminal tyres. The Finnish manufacturer says the new Nokian HTS G2 has been designed to be “even more rugged, efficient and safe,” and it reports that tests “confirm that Nokian has succeeded in all these areas.”

Apollo Tyres aiming for 20/80 OEM-replacement mix in Europe

Following the start of production at its Gyöngyöshalász plant in Hungary last quarter, Apollo Tyres is on its way to almost doubling European passenger car tyre production capacity over the coming year and a half. Speaking with analysts and investors last week after the release of Apollo’s FY2018 financial results, chief financial officer Gaurav Kumar confirmed that the facility in Hungary is expected to reach a daily capacity of 16,000 car tyres by the second half of FY2019 – in other words, sometime between September next year and the end of March 2019. This will give Apollo Tyres a total daily capacity of up to 35,000 passenger car tyres at its two European plants – and more than a third of output in Gyöngyöshalász may be earmarked for OEM customers.

Cooper becomes the official tyre of Kahn Design

Automotive fashion house Kahn Design has designated the Cooper brand its first ‘Official Tyre’. Cooper will be the tyre of choice for Kahn’s Range Rover and Jeep model offerings, with Kahn outfitting vehicles with the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro POR, Discoverer S/TMaxx POR and Discoverer A/T3 Sport. In addition, select vehicles from Kahn subsidiary Chelsea Truck Company will also be fitted with Cooper Discoverer A/T3 Sport tyres.

‘Shared’ tyre test gives ContiRoadAttack 3 a second win

Magazine titles belonging to the same publishing group streamline costs by sharing tyre testing resources, and as a result often draw similar conclusions. This was the case for the motorcycle tyre tests published by German magazines Motorrad and PS. Both Motorrad’s May 2017 evaluation of six touring tyre brands and the test of these products appearing in the September issue of PS magazine name the same brand as winner. Continental is therefore celebrating a “second test victory in just three months” for its ContiRoadAttack 3.
