Conti: Corona bridge concept will save jobs

First, analysts warned in mid-May that Conti’s R&D budgets and European tyre factories could face cuts. Then the Hannover-based tyremaker responded by saying it is “intensively” monitoring European tyre demand and production. By June the CEO was warning staff of job cuts. Nevertheless, despite such clear challenges facing the wider automotive industry and beyond, the company is still advancing innovative solutions to the very complex problem. Colleagues at our German sister-publication, Neue Reifenzeitung, which can be found online at reifenpresse.de, found that the so-called “Corona bridge” concept is at the forefront of Conti’s work to address the adverse conditions and save jobs.

Continental’s Taraxagum project gains momentum

The miniscule pieces of plant root that Dr Tobias Ruckert shows us look for all the world like fresh spices, but the recipes he prepares with them aren’t for eating. These roots are from the Taraxacum kok-saghyz (TKS) plant, better known as Russian dandelion. Continental has been evaluating its suitability as an alternative source of natural rubber for much of the past decade.

Giti Tire has made its latest ultra-high performance tyre, the GT Radial WinterPro2 Sport, available to order. The tyre is the brand’s latest winter tyre for the UHP market, launching in nine 17-19” sizes. The manufacturer states that the tyre is designed for both high powered passenger cars and premium SUVs.

Giti gets 1st European LCV OE fitment with VW Crafter

Giti Tire’s GitiVanHD1 tyre has been selected as original equipment for the award-winning VW Crafter. Named Parkers’ 2020 Best Large Van of the Year, the Crafter will roll off the Wreszenia, Poland production line on the size 205/70R17 C115/113R tyre on the front and rear axles. The rear axle is a twin fitment, distributing the load across four tyres. The deal marks Giti Tire’s first European light commercial vehicle OE fitment.

Yokohama Advan Apex V601 wins iF Design Award 2020

Yokohama’s ultra-high performance Advan Apex V601tyre has been named a winner of an iF Design Award 2020. The tyre, which is currently available in the US market, combines new high-performance tyre technology with an asymmetrical tread pattern reminiscent of that used in the Yokohama A008, one of the its most historically important tyres. The tyre delivers superior wet performance and handling while delivering a most comfortable and quiet ride, while its high-grade micro silica tread compound delivers excellent cornering performance.

New Communications and Public Affairs chief at Continental’s Tires business

Starting 1 April, Silke Bernhardt has taken up the newly-created position of Head of Communications & Public Affairs within Continental’s Tires business area. She is based at the company’s headquarters in Hannover, Germany and shoulders responsibility for the strategic direction of internal and external communications. Bernhardt also manages the global communications units within Asia, North and South America, and Europe.

Continental postpones Annual Shareholders’ Meeting

Continental is postponing its 2020 Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, which was scheduled to take place on 30 April. It reached this decision after the regional government in Lower Saxony, Germany announced a ban on large events in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Postponement was viewed as preferable to relocating the event away from the company’s home town of Hannover.

Nynas showing low rolling resistance oil benefits at Tire Technology

Nynas is attending Tire Technology Expo in Hannover, Germany, 25-27 February 2020 where the company is showing how tyres made with Nynas oils provide “low rolling resistance, reducing energy losses and fuel consumption, while maintaining wet grip for improved control on snow and ice.” Performance of naphthenic oil in winter tyres will also be examined in a presentation by Technical Advisor Dr. Kamyar Alavi, entitled “Get a grip: performance of naphthenic oil in winter tyres.”

Continental holds HQ topping out ceremony

The future of Continental is taking shape – 15 months after holding a groundbreaking ceremony for its new headquarters site in Hannover, Germany, last week the tyre maker and automotive systems provider held a topping out ceremony for the facility. During the ceremony, Continental chief executive officer Dr Elmar Degenhart reported that the progress remains “right on schedule” and the buildings will be ready to be occupied in time for the company’s 150th anniversary in 2021.

Giti expands seasonal tyre range with GitiAllSeasonCity

Giti Tire has expanded its seasonal tyre range with the launch of the GitiAllSeasonCity, a passenger car tyre aimed at smaller A-C segment vehicles including the Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo. Initially available in European markets (but not in the UK) in 13 sizes from 165/70R14 to 195/55R16 across speed indices H and T, the tyre carries the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol for approved fitment in markets with laws governing winter tyre use.

Giti Tire presents new tyre for electric cars

Giti Tire wasn’t only present at last month’s BMW Berlin Marathon as official Main Sponsor, the event was also the location chosen for the global premiere of a new tyre specifically developed for electric vehicles. The tyre maker shares that the GitiSynergyE2 will be available in some markets from spring 2020.
