Michelin opens second Tigar Tyres plant, says more entry-level investment possible

The second Tigar Tyres plant in Pirot, Serbia is now open. An official inauguration was held at the facility on 9 October, and this culminated in Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and Jean-Dominique Senard, CEO of parent company the Michelin Group, signing the first tyre to roll off the production line. The inauguration marked the completion of the first part of two-phase project. Investment has so far reached €215 million, and the 56,000 square metre facility will be capable of producing between 8 million and 12 million tyres in its phase one incarnation. Some 500 people will be employed at the new plant, increasing the Tigar workforce to around 2,600 to 2,700.

New Pirelli WSB tyres help Sykes set new Misano track record

Pirelli introduced its latest World Superbike tyres at Misano, helping Tom Sykes to set a new lap record. The Superpole tyre was developed by Pirelli as a qualifying tyre, and Sykes was able to shave more than a tenth of a second off Troy Corser’s 2010 record. He also won both the Superbike races on the new soft blend rear solution with team mate Loris Baz and Italian Marco Melandri crossing the line behind him.

Iveco opts for 70-series tyres on new tractor units

Iveco has standardised on 315/70 R 22.5 tyres for new Euro VI tractor units entering service in the UK after seeing the fuel-saving potential of 70-series rubber compared with the 295/80 R 22.5 fitments previously favoured in the UK. Trials in conjunction with Michelin and a major Iveco national fleet customer recorded a 3.87 per cent improvement in fuel economy between two identical Stralis AT440S46TX/P vehicles shod with the two different sizes of tyres.

Bridgestone has presented Rugby fast-fitter TW Tyres with an award recognising the company’s 35 years in business. TW Tyres, based in Paynes Lane, and owner Mike Furner were presented with a cut-glass accolade from the manufacturer to recognise decades of hard work in the town.

Pirelli aims second phase of Mexico investment at green tyres

Pirelli has detailed plans to put the second half of its US$400 million investment in the company’s Silao, Mexico factory towards so-called “green performance” tyre production. Mexico’s president Enrique Peña Nieto met with a delegation of Pirelli’s top management who illustrated the progress of the company’s investment in the country at the announcement.

McConechy’s Tyre Services, one of Scotland’s oldest and largest independent garage chains, has joined the road safety organisation TyreSafe. Mainly active north of the border, McConechy’s also has five branches operating across Yorkshire under the Gordon’s Tyres banner. “With an established presence across the whole of Scotland, we’re delighted to welcome on board McConechy’s as our latest member,” comments Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

GTÜ, Autoclub recommend Dunlop, Vredestein, Falken tyres

Germany’s largest officially recognised inspection organisation the Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung (GTÜ) and Autoclub Europa (ACE) have conducted extensive summer tyre testing, giving the Dunlop BluResponse its highest recommendation, with the Vredestein Sportrac 5 in second place. One tyre receiving a “recommended” rating at a lower price point was the Falken ZIEX ZE914 Ecorun. The summer tyre received the rating by achieving an above-average environmental score at a low price to performance ratio.

AF Corse takes second Gulf 12 Hours win on Avon tyres

Italian racing team AF Corse claimed its second Gulf 12 Hours win on Avon tyres in 2012 at the Yas Marina Circuit last week, in the final race of the Cooper brand’s 2012 motorsport season. The AF Corse team, which recently announced its entry to the Avon Tyres British GT Championship in 2013, took the spoils by the excitingly small margin of 2.6 seconds in the first Gulf 12 Hours Race, held at the Herman Tilke-designed circuit back in January. Victory in the second event of the year was decidedly more convincing, with the lead AF Corse Ferrari crossing the line nearly half a minute clear of the rest of the field in its second visit to the Emirati capital.

Jason Cooper becomes Michelin operational sales manager, CV tyres

Michelin has appointed Jason Cooper as UK & Republic of Ireland operational sales manager for its truck and bus division. Cooper brings more than 17 years of experience with Michelin to the role. This includes the last 18 months as sales process and training manager for Michelin, and four years in a dual role as sales process and training manager and national sales manager for the car tyre product line in Delhi, India.

Bridgestone launches 2 Ecopia fuel-saving truck tyres

Bridgestone gave its latest two truck tyres – the Ecopia H-Steer 001 and Ecopia H-Drive 001 (in 315/70 R22.5) – their European debut at Reifen 2012. According to the company, these are “the most ecological and economical truck tyres that Bridgestone has ever developed.” As such the two long-haul tyres reportedly deliver are said to offer radically lower rolling resistance, fuel consumption and environmental impact, while maintaining overall levels of tyre performance.
