Maxxis’ Premitra HP5 car tyre has received a ‘highly recommended’ rating from German motoring magazine Auto Zeitung in its latest summer tyre test. Competing against top global tyre brands, Maxxis states that the “result demonstrates how motorists can obtain all the hallmarks of premium tyre performance without the inflated price tag.” The Premitra HP5 came fourth overall in Auto Zeitung’s test.
Bridgestone is supplying Potenza branded slick tyres as a new chapter in its Volkswagen supply partnership begins at the Green Hell of the Nürburgring. Volkswagen’s electric ID. R will aim to beat the lap record for electric vehicles on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in summer 2019. Bridgestone is a long-term original equipment tyre supplier for the firm’s production vehicles, and the new deal sees the companies expand their partnership into motorsport. The ID. R is the racing forerunner to the new ID. product family – Volkswagen’s wide range of purely electric vehicles to be launched from 2020.
Hankook Tire has been named a winner in two categories of the iF Design Award 2019. We won’t know all the details until the awards ceremony is held on 15 March, however the tyre maker says it is receiving three awards in total in the ‘Professional Concept’ and ‘Product’ award categories for its work on the Hexonic and HLS-23 concept tyres and its Hankook Kinergy 4S² all-season car tyre.
Two Apollo Vredestein tyres have been given strong plaudits after earning recommendations from the German-speaking motoring associations and testing organisation ADAC. Looking at commercial van tyres for the first time, the Apollo Altrust van tyre took first position out of 16 models tested, while Vredestein, a relative veteran of such tests compared to its sister brand, was only bested by Bridgestone’s Turanza T005, taking second place on the car tyre podium with its Sportrac 5.
For their current summer tyre test, the main motoring associations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (the ADAC, ÖAMTC and TCS) have looked at 32 products in total. Half of these were in the small family car size 185/65 R15 H/V, and the remainder size 215/65 R16C, tyres suited for use on vans, minibuses and campervans.

Pirelli’s new Ice Zero 2 studded winter tyre has been introduced in an exclusive preview on the roads of the World Skiing Championships at Are, Sweden, an event for which Pirelli is the main sponsor. Pirelli is also equipping the Audi e-tron cars used by the event organisers, and for featured “ice-driving experiences”, with Ice Zero FR and Ice Zero 2 rubber. The Ice Zero 2 is designed to meet the mobility needs of top of the range cars on Nordic and Russian roads. It will be launched officially on the icy roads of Pirelli’s proving ground at Flurheden in Swedish Lapland.

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK has acquired Weeting Tyres, a leading tyre retail company based in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, UK. The company operates four branches as a franchisee in Goodyear’s HiQ autocare network – in Bury St Edmunds, Chelmsford, Ipswich & Kings Lynn – as well as one independent branch in Brandon, Suffolk, which also functions as its head office. The area served by the latter branch is described as having a high value car parc. All sites will become Goodyear’s equity operating under the HiQ brand following the completion of the acquisition.
SD-International recently added the Three A brand to its contract tyre manufacturing portfolio. According to the company, Three A tyres are now available in England, Scotland and Wales across most market sectors including passenger car fitments.

Hinckford Farming has praised Michelin’s “excellent support” after replacing a rubber tracked crawler with a Claas Xerion 5000 fitted with a set of the manufacturer’s Ultraflex high volume AxioBib tyres. The arable farm had been using tracks for many years for its heavy cultivations but had recently struggled with grip in wet conditions, and suffered damage to the soil structure on headlands when turning.
Cooper Tire Europe has become the presenting sponsor to the RallyX on Ice Festival. The festival takes place over three rounds between 18 and 23 March 2019 in Åre, Sweden. The championship will be known as “RallyX on Ice presented by Cooper Tires”.
